Scooter Questions

Hi all. I’m a Disney regular, but my mom will be joining me on this trip. She is going to need to rent a scooter, but I’m having some trouble understanding how it all works.

1. I know Scooterbug is the only company that will leave with bell services, but we don’t want to go with them. For delivery, how do you pick a time when you’re flying in? I mean, what if your flight is delayed? Will companies work with you for day of delays?

2. When you get to your resort, if you’re still waiting for your scooter rental, are there wheelchairs or any other options at the resort to help her get to her room? We booked a preferred room at POP, but she has a back injury and I’m concerned about her being able to walk the distance (she can transfer and walk, but not long distances).

3. Will these companies deliver the scooter to your room? Or the lobby only? Again, the concern is her walking around a lot. Will I be able to get it for her in the lobby if she books it under her name?

4. 4-6 hour charges don’t seem long to me? How easy is it to charge in park? How long does it take to charge? Will we be able to get through a full park day?

Thanks! Any tips or info you could get would be great.

Also, if book today, they ask for time of delivery! My trip is months away!!! But there’s a sale… ugh. I just don’t know what our flight time is.

I have so many questions!

Does the Pride Maxima fit on the skyliner? It looks like it’s like one inch smaller than the requirement. Would that be extremely tight?

First, if you’re flying in , can she handle walking in the airport? The airports have been really busy & I wouldn’t count on a wheelchair being available. If it were me, I’d be checking out thrift shops for a cheap wheelchair. Let all your friends know you’re looking for one. A scooter will still be preferred for the parks. Most companies seem to work with people- so if you call once you have the date, they’ll still reserve it with a “temporary”time to be updated by you later.

She *can* walk, she just is in pain when she does. She could walk through the airport if she really needed to, but not all day at the parks. I’m not too worried about the wheelchair situation. I just wanted to make it as easy on her as possible because it’s a long trip.

The scooter for the parks is what is a must.

Honestly, she’s been seeing specialists for a couple months and she’s hoping to have surgery beforehand that will help, but we can’t rely on that.

I ended up ordering something through Gold Mobility for now because they are having a sale! Though I don’t know how often they do them. Trip isn’t until August.

You won't regret Gold Mobility. pick an approximate time for delivery. Just keep them updated on any delays (if you know ahead of time). They will contact you the day before, to confirm your scooter, etc. The day of they will stay in contact via text. Should you be delayed, etc keep them posted. I always (I need the scooter) give them my daughter's name and her phone number as a secondary contact. She receives text ( the same ones as me,). This especially came in handy when I accidentally left my phone at home. You definitely will be able to meet them in the lobby while your mom stays in the room. They will meet you outside the main entrance of the resort. There are no wheelchairs available at resort to help your mom (see below). However, there is comfortable seating in the resort lobby for her.

The scooter will definitely last all day. Remember to turn it off when waiting (standing still long period of times) - eating, watching parades, waiting for fireworks. Be sure to plug it in each night (make sure its charging). I've plugged it in - or so I thought I did once - and still made a full second day - although I don't recommend it.

The scooter will fit in the skyliner. There is a separate area and they will pull a handicap car off the main line. Your mother will simply ride slowly onto the car - remain seated in it turn off scooter - and cast member will place blocks behind to secure it - same procedure when exiting.

When Gold Mobility is picking back up the scooter. They text letting you know they will be there in 5-10 minutes. We meet them outside agin

I agree with others about finding\ buying a wheelchair. I bought one from Wal-Mart over four years ago. My daughter wheels me inside airport til we get to the ,"wheelchair assist area". They will provide a chair pusher, and will take you through airport, stopping at restroom and thru security. When you book with airline, call and let them know you want wheelchair assist.

Wheelchairs are readily available at MCO,.and other airports. There is a shortage of pushers. Shouldn't be an issue if a companion is willing and able o push

What about a rollator for those inbetween times such as before you get the wheelchair at airport or scooter at resort?

My DH uses a rollator all the time. Once we had to wait about 20 mins before someone with a wheelchair showed up at airport. So glad he had his rollator with him.

I also use a rollator full time at home. What I looked for was a way to carry a rollator on my scooter for getting from the scooter to the ride. Unfortunately, I didn't see one. However, I did see one scooter with an attachment for carrying a regular walker on the back. But that has to have the capacity to fold flat, which a rollator doesn't. I hate to spend the money for a walker just for my trip to WDW, but they're only about $4o. I think, which wouldn't be too bad.

I would recommend Walker Mobility Scooter Rentals. They deliver and pick up from your resort and have the longest battery life advertised. I rented from them last year and am so thankful for their scooter. I had no issues. The scooter lasted me all day and night including the extra magic hours on some nights. There scooters are also water resistant so you don't have to cover them up in the rain as you would have to do with some other scooters. The scooter comes with damage insurance, cellphone holder, 2 usb ports, 2 cup holders, headlight and a horn. If you are running late, you can always call them and they can help you reschedule your time of delivery. I spoke with Cherilyn when I booked and I recommend asking for her when you call. She is very knowledgeable and kind. My driver was on time for delivery and was also very professional.

The first time we used a scooter at WDW, DH was concerned driving thru the lines, so I tried attaching a rollator with bungie cord and 1 inch wide velcro. Didn't work. And DH found using a three wheeled scooter much easier than he feared.

He drives thru the lines and uses a folding cane for the last 20 ft.

So you can just use the wheelchair and not wait for anyone? Last trip at MCO we waited over an hour for someone to push . I had the rollator, two backpack type bags and shopping bag size of med stuff (cpap etc) I didn't think there would be issues with waiting for someone.

I know you can load some stuff on wheelchair, but I don't think all of all that, can you????

I’m sorry that was an issue for you, but we won’t have an issue pushing. There aren’t any medical extras we will need to bring and everyone flying is all relatively young and able bodied (except for my mom who has an injury)

It depends on how many are in your group and the physical condition of the pusher and wheelchair rider.

Is this a challenge? Pusher wears a backpack. Wheelchair pax holds CPAP stuff. Second backpack is either held by wheelchair pax or lifted high and looped around long rod.

Rollator is pushed by wheelchair pax or by pusher. Airport pushers push 2 chairs one with each hand.

Realistically one or both backpacks should be checked.

Just me and DH. Backpacks are for just in case suitcases get lost plus carrying meds and phones/ipad. Not going to check.

I don't think all your questions were answered.

1) How are you getting from MCO? Using car service, ride share or taxi figure 2 hours after scheduled arrival. You ll generally communicate via txt. Scooter companies know flights are delayed. Try with updates and they'll reschedule. Important arrive too late, sometimes as early as 7p, you'll have to wait until the next morning
2) Don't count on a wheelchair being available.
3) Have her sit outside or in the lobby. Worse case scenario you may wait half an hour. That assumes your flight is early or late.
4) The 4 to 6 hours is continuous driving. Turn it off when you're not using it. It will last all day.

Can you book a flight scheduled to land no later then early afternoon? That gives you leeway if your flight is delayed.
Mom is in pain. Later flight consider Scooterbug or consider staying at Swan. Dolphin or Reserve

Meds, electronics and emergency clothing should fit in one medium-sized backpack.

You have to decide if you want to change the way you pack or hang out and wait an hour for a pusher.

The battery almost always lasts all day, but a few times we have run out near the end of a very active day. On those occasions, we've asked cast members (usually custodial) and they've been happy to point us to the nearest outlet where we could charge long wnough to last us back to the hotel.

Can anyone tell me if the Pride Maxima actually fits the skyliner?

It looks like yes based on the specs, but it’s pretty close so Im curious who has actually don’t it.
