San Francisco Hotels

We will be spending 4 days/3 nights in San Francisco next June and are looking for hotel recommendations. Would like something that is centrally located. We will have a car, but would prefer to leave it parked if we can.

Thanks,
Tammy

We loved the Argonaut ... Right on the water...we had great bay views. We walked most places (or took the trolley). Drove to the Disney Family Museum.

Another vote for the Argonaut! We loved it. Easy walk to many tourist spots. Right next door to a cable car turn about and Ghiradellli Square. Like any big city, the parking at the hotel is pricey. They charge extra if you have an SUV. We did and paid $60+tax per night.

We have stayed several times at the Hyatt a few blocks away from the Argonaut. There are several hotels in that area. There are 2 cable car turn arounds plus the F-line trolley in the area. You are within walking distance of a good number of restaurants, the boat tour to Alactraz and harbor tours . We took a hop on/off 2 day bus tour our last trip that allowed us to see a lot of the city
Not to mention the Buena Vista the place that introduced Irish coffee to America :thumbsup2
P.S. we didn't have a car and saw what we wanted to see without one

We love the Sir Frances Drake. The St. Frances and the Parc 55 are also nice. All three are in the Union Square area.

Just be careful which way you walk out from parc55. Backs up to the tenderloin which is EXTREMELY BAD AREA. I used to work right across from hotel. Expect to pay a lot for parking. The closer to the water the more it is. A friend just paid $50 a night atbthe hotel he was at.

We too loved the Argonaut and spent 3 nights there last May. A bit expensive but so worth it. Our room was a suite on the corner of the top floor and we had a great view of the bay, the bridge and the cable cars. Great service and helpful staff. Puts Disney's deluxe hotels to shame for the price!

It is remarkable how close the luxury hotels are in San Francisco to the really nasty parts of town. From luxury hotels to single room occupancy hotels.

This is true of all the Union Square area hotels (about being careful which way you walk, stay on Powell and the streets around the square and you'll be fine).

Where dis you work? I used to work at the art gallery above Burger King by the cable car turn around.

Isn't it amazing?

We stayed at the Argonaut because they have queen size beds and large rooms which we need with teen boys. It was in a great location and also had a good restaurant. the staff were great and free wine in the evenings!

Thanks for asking the question. We are thinking about going summer of 2015 around July 4th and will not have a car. We might stay in Oakland a few days as well.

I'm not that worried about most of the major hotels in Oakland, but there are some motels that sort of reek of "sketchy neighborhood". I remember going through the Marriott at night and thinking it was pretty nice. The neighborhood outside isn't bad when there are people.

However, Oakland is one thing, but overall maybe the hotels in Emeryville and Berkeley are in safer areas for tourists. But not all of them.

If you do that, be sure to visit Fenton's Creamery, the ice cream place mentioned in UP. It was worked into the story because it's a favorite of the Pixar animators. It's in a decent part of Oakland, but like any urban area, try not to get lost. ;)

Great suggestion. The crab sandwich is delicious and there's an ice cream flavor for everyone.
