Disney will re-release its classic 1959 animated feature Sleeping Beauty in a restored print of the original 70mm Technirama version. The film will receive a two-week screening beginning August 22 at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood.
The restoration extends to the print's soundtrack in the original six-track stereophonic mix. The film will be preceded by screenings of the Disney featurette, "Grand Canyon," the original trailer and several vintage shorts.
On opening night, a "making of" panel will discuss the film, its six-year creation and place in animation history. Panelists include animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston (who created the film's Good Fairy characters), Mary Costa (Sleeping Beauty voice), current top Disney animator Andreas Deja, Scott MacQueen (the film's restoration expert), and music historian Alex Rannie.
