Parents of teen boys

I have 3 boys, 21, 19, 14.

They each had growth spurts at different rates like all boys do.

DS14 just recently went through a huge growth spurt that made me, DH, and the older 2 boys stop what we were doing because we all noticed DS14 looked like he grew a few inches overnight when we saw him in the morning.

Today DS14 asked me to but cream on his back and I noticed about 10-12 rows of stretch marks on the entire lower back area.

The older boys never had that experience.

Is this common? Did your boys get stretch marks? I find it fascinating.

BTW, DS14 is a real skinny kid so it’s not from growing the other way.

I’m not there with my sons yet, but my husband got stretch marks as a teen from growing quickly (up, not out). His are on his hip/thigh area.

Both my (very tall) sister and brother grew 6+" in what seemed like overnight. They both have stretch marks on their upper thighs, and my sister on her breasts too. I grew extremely slowly, and ended up tall as well but escaped stretch marks (until I had a 10+ pound baby, that is).

Now you've got me wondering if my son will end up with any stretch marks. My 14 yr old is now 5'10" and last July his orthopedic specialist told us he had "baby bones" when he looked at an x-ray of his pelvis, so much more growth to happen. That was about 2 inches ago, but that has been gradual. I think he's probably got another couple inches to go, I hope. He just turned 14 in February. I have stretch marks on my hips from when I did my growing, I was skinny.

Are they at his waistline where they can be from his pants being tight and pulling at his skin. I have heard of that. I have three boys and only the heaviest one has stretch marks. I have no idea if it can be the cause, just heard of it.

Both of my boys (18 and 22) have stretch marks on their backs. They are both slim at 6' 2" and 6' 3".

I'll have to look. DS21 grew 8 inches in 18 months, back when he was in middle school. He's 6 feet tall now. We suspect DS12 will be taller--he's always been tall for his age, and is in the middle of a growth spurt now. Probably 6 inches in the past 6-8 months. He has Christmas present pants (for Scouts) that I hemmed at the end of December--he had them on a couple weeks ago, and it's clear that I need to drop that hem before fall. I'm waiting to do it, because what are the odds he's going to grow more between now and Sept.-Oct.? He's ~5'6-7" now--taller than his mom!

My son is full of stretch marks. We call them his tiger strips they are so big and all over his lower back as well as where his shoulders are at the top. They are so red too , some days they are less so but for now they look like tiger strips.

He turns 21 tomorrow so hopefully some day they will fade. He is was always a tall child and is 6'4 right now so I'm guessing he is done growing.

I just want to say that I'm glad I read this. So they DO grow over night! I just looked at my son this morning and I am POSITIVE he's taller than he was yesterday :rotfl: I thought I was going crazy!

DH has some stretch marks on his upper legs/thighs from growing fast. They've faded tremendously since I've known him (we were 11 and 13 when we met!). He's almost 30.

My dd has stretch marks from going through puberty quickly. She is tall. She was very upset with them at first, but they have faded. I wish more people would talk about them and help teens realize they are more common than they think.

As a mom of two girls and two boys, this has been my experience:

Girls: They walk out of their bedroom, and you cast an eye at their outfit. Those pants are getting short, you think. Next fall she'll need a longer size.

Boys: They walk out of their bedroom. Pants are clearly an inch above the top of their shoes--way too short for going out in public. You send them back to change, but to no avail. Every single pair of pants is suddenly, mysteriously, way too short.

With DS12--The Scout pants come unhemmed. Luckily, I folded them up, rather than cutting off the extra fabric.

DS1 is 13, and is already 5'9". He has stretch marks as well. I was always a tall girl too, and had them on my thighs as a teen, but thankfully they faded. Hopefully theirs will too!

Both our boys have gone through period of growing pains, but I don't recall stretch marks. Younger son (who turns 13 this week) is dealing with Sever's Disease - a condition that affects his Achilles tendon - doctors have told us it's a growing pain issue with athletes.

my dd has stretch marks on her knees from growing when she was in middle school. She is graduating college, and never wears shorts, so I don't know if they are still visible, or if they faded.

DS is almost 16 and has stretch marks on his lower-mid back. At first, I didn't know what they were and was concerned that someone hurt him! I kept asking what happened, did anyone hurt you. I googled it and found out what it was, and then confirmed with the DR at his next appt. He's around 6' and I keep waiting for him to be able to wear the same pants for more than 1 season. I do hope they fade.
