Ouch - my knee - anyone else?

Morning DIS friends. Let me start by saying I know you aren't doctors. I'm just throwing this out there to see if anyone has dealt with this before.

Four weeks ago I was out shopping with my daughter and grandbabies. I bent down to pick up my one year old grandson when I heard this loud pop in my knee. Right after it started to hurt, but nothing awful, and I was able to bear weight on it.

Here we are today. Still can bear weight on it just fine however in a sitting position it really hurts to lift my right leg. I can't bend down on it and if I do I need to pull myself up. The more I'm on it during the day it starts to ache up my leg as well and I can find myself limping at times. This pain/feeling is in the back of my knee. Almost feels like a rubber band is twisted really tight (if that makes any sense). My knee doesn't slip at all and the bones feel just fine.

I'm in the mindset that time will heal. Being a new year and all I dread to take on medical expense if not necessary. Appreciate anyone's experience with an acute knee injury.

Have a great day!

I hope you're right, but I wouldn't bet on it. It still hurts after 4 weeks? That's a fair bit of time to deal with the pain, and if you're limping it sounds as if you're at risk for taking a tumble (which can lead to further complications.)

Hope it resolves, or you can get it checked out. :)

My mom had creaky knees that hurt.
I have had creaky knees that hurt since I was a kid. My Pediatrician said I would out grow it. I'm 66 and that still haven't happened. Mine are loud enough that people have always noticed the sound.
And my daughter has creaky knees with pain too.

Gently try to push on your kneecap and see if it moves at all. I have a trick knee that went out very much like that the first time. Sometimes the kneecap obviously slides to one side, but sometimes it's not noticeable from looking at it. But even if it's out of place just a tiny bit, that can make it quite painful. Slipping it back into place will fix it.

If it's not that, I'd have it looked at. Four weeks isn't a long time if your kneecap is out of place, because that's not something that can heal itself. But it is a rather long time for other obvious causes, such as a sprain or strain.

Nope, doesn't move at all and I can push hard on my knee. Isn't the bones. Feels like a ligament or whatever is in the back area of the knee.

Hmmm, the only other thing I would know to try is gently moving it around in different positions. My dad was convinced he had a shoulder injury for a few weeks until he did a whole bunch of intentional movements yesterday--turned out it was a stubborn muscle spasm. He normally would have seen a doctor, but we're in the middle of a cross-country move and it didn't hurt bad enough to go to urgent care.

If that doesn't work either, it seems like a doc may be your only choice. Good luck!

I’d strongly suggest seeing a good orthopedic surgeon who may prescribe an mri. Sounds like a ligament injury. Especially after 4 weeks with no change. Once you know the cause you can work on a solution. But until you know it for sure you’re risking further injury and continued discomfort.

I feel that is what is going on.

I just bent over to pick up something and ouch, almost felt like I re-tore something. Pain worse from it.

I messaged my primary about referring me to a knee specialist. Dang, was really hoping it would go away. I think because I can put weight on it I felt that it would get better.

i'm glad you are going to get it looked at because it could cause problems with other parts of your body. without realizing it you may be adapting your gait which over time can cause issues with your hips and back.
You are so right - already feel that in my lower back

Not a doc, but I think a new pain after a specific event is different from a chronic issue.

Not sure of your age but you mention grandchildren. Sadly, knees take a lot of wear and tear over time and it could be any number of things. Most are not going to heal on their own. My son's dog jerked me sideways when he ran after a squirrel and I had surgery to repair a miniscus tear, luckily for me, not too serious. My knee still aches occasionally. Better to get checked than to string it along and it only gets worse. My insurance wouldn't permit an MRI initially and I had to try cortizone injections and other treatments first. I hope your insurance doesn't string you along.

I would have it checked asap. They will likely start with an xray. I had a TKR several years ago and waited way too long to have it done.

You may be doing more damage by hoping it will heal as I did. Good luck and I hope you are doing better soon.

Edit: I meant to mention in the meantime, OTC lidocane roll on or cream (generic) is helpful with the pain.

As others have mentioned, definitely contact your doctor.
It sounds like a torn meniscus to me, but I’m not a doctor, just heard of this through other people before. They said they heard a pop and then had knee pain, even though they could move it.
After exam, doctor might order xray & MRI to be sure of diagnosis.
Good luck
