Opinions?? Las Vegas Vs Fantasy 7 Nt Western Carib?

Cruise. No question. Never had any desire to go anywhere near Las Vegas.

Las Vegas is a different beast in my opinion. A week there I could never do. I would wait until she is 21, but obviously you have to do what is best for your family. Mine would be taking the cruise :yay:

Yes, just can't order alcoholic drinks.
So that's a check... check what Vegas limits to under 21 besides alcohol... I am sure restaurants are ok.. but maybe some night activities regardless check for IDS even if not drinking.. Casinos are nice to check out as many have themes.. not sure if under 21 or 18 is the rule.. I have only been when I was older.. so I didnt think to check and don't recall being checked.. When I was there vegas had a great club scene..

I know for me Vegas is a place I would love to go but WITHOUT my mom....

There’s actually a lot for kids to do in Vegas. Shows, rollercoasters, circus, great pools, lots of food. I don’t gamble but I love the place for a night or two. My teens love it, but for a week...um no.

In January the pools are probably closed. When I went in February they all were because it was in the low 40s.

Grand Canyon is about 7000 feet elevation on the south rim, 8000 feet on the north rim. It will be very cold there, and possibly snowy in January.

Las Vegas is great ... as a location to fly in and out of in order to drive out to Zion NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Capitol Reef NP, the Grand Canyon, and many others. But not really in the middle of winter.

If you're looking for something different from a cruise though, we loved Costa Rica, and Jan would be a great time of year.

Thanks for the inputs so far.

No, we are not gamblers - we will really only be in Vegas for the shows - The Beatles Cirque Show, maybe Lady Gaga, Penn and Teller, Blue Man Group etc - really more of a show tours than a typical Vegas experience. We have never been there before.
If you were a gambler the Vegas trip could end up costing more than a cruise :)

There's enough to do for a few days without actually gambling. And it's proximity to LA makes it a not-bad option to pair with DL. But with that said I don't think it's a great trip to do solo, as many of the (non-gambling) things they offer feel like they work better with 2 or more people. I suppose that's a side effect of their whole "What happens in Vegas" campaign.

I did say in a previous post it would be cold, but I just got back from a Quebec cruise that was freezing and people were swimming...some people are polar bears.

It’s not much different then NYC in my opinion. Both are cities that never sleep. I think Vegas is cleaner though.

Both have fake Mickey's... About being cleaner, not sure.. If you have kids, don't let them look down to those "playing cards" most people drop on the sidewalks, specially if you are walking the strip at night...

We have a done a week in Vegas with our DS7 a few times. There are a lot of things to see and do without being 21. We don’t gamble and always have a good time.

Having said that, I would do the cruise. I find in Vegas you are constantly paying for everything small thing and it adds up quickly. Food costs are always higher than anywhere else we vacation. In January the pools will be closed or heated but you won’t want to just sit out at the pool.

A cruise would be more of a vacation IMO. We did a Caribbean cruise out of Galveston the first week of January and really enjoyed it!

They just hand them to my teenage son.LoL I was referring to trash. NYC is pretty dirty but it seems especially dirty after you cruise through Canada. I’m not a fan of big cities, but I wont shy away from any of them. They all have there plus and minuses including Vegas. You kind of know what your getting when you visit Vegas.

The following is just my opinion.

Las Vegas is an amazing experience. Like Disney World and New Orleans, it is incomparable. I don't gamble (tried it, was bored) but it made no difference. I loved the crazy, overblown world they created and returned at least every year for ten years (then the prices got our of control and we moved on). Every time I went I was completely immersed in the insanity and enjoyed every moment. Highly recommend everyone try it out at least once...

...when you are twenty-one or over. If you are not, expect security to dog you everywhere. My son, who was clean cut and polo-styled at the time, went when he was under aged and his strongest memory was gong to use a washroom just off the gaming floor and being told by security to 'move along' because it was the theme of his trip

My vote is cruise now, Vegas at 21 to have the full, best experience. And go with friends, not parents.

OP, it all depends on what you want out of the vacation. I have never been to Las Vegas, but it seems like there are various forms of entertainment for young and young-at-heart adults.

I follow the Grand Canyon’s official FB page, and they are constantly posting weather and road closure advisories in the winter.

Comparing LV to NYC is apples to oranges. NYC is home to millions of people, Manhattan is an island, and the number of commuters to that island each workday is voluminous. I don’t even know why it came up in this conversation since it wasn’t one of your vacation options.

NYC? Where'd that come from? I wouldn't necessarily call NYC a comp to Vegas. Maybe in terms of lights but otherwise no.
The poster lives in NYC said and she'd never go to Vegas. Personally I think if you can tolerate NYC you can tolerate Las Vegas. I can tolerate both for a very limited time...two days max. Las Vegas has a pretty big suburb with families and normal working people. I believe the population is around 2 million.

Here's a dissenting opinion... if you've done a few Disney cruises and haven't been to Vegas, go Vegas. Contrary to the naysayers, there is a TON of stuff to see and do besides gambling. My first trip to Vegas we didn't know if we were ever going to go back so we pulled out all the stops. We saw

Penn & Teller (@ Rio)
David Copperfield (@ MGM Grand)
Cirque's Ka (@ MGM Grand)
Cirque's O (@ Bellagio)
and a couple lower-name shows...

On follow-up trips we also hit
Cirque's ONE (@ Mandalay Bay)
Cirque's Zumanity (@ New York, New York) (adult only - might not recommend)

That's just nighttime shows. For the daytime there was
Lion Encounter (@MGM Grand)
Gondalla's (@Venetian)
Sirens of TI (Treasure Island pirate show)
Volcano(@ Mirage)
Forum Shops show (@ Caesar's Palace)
Shark Reef (aquarium @ Mandalay Bay)
Mob Museum (Old Vegas - Freemont Street)
Freemont Street Experience (Canopy light show)
Ziplining @ Freemont Street (UNDER the Canopy!!!!! :D )
Sigfried & Roy's Magic Garden (@Mirage - Tiger exhibit)
New York New York Roller Coaster

I KNOW I'm forgetting things, but the point is that if you want to see and do a bunch of stuff, Vegas has a TON to offer that has nothing to do with gambling. You just have to do the research. And that's not touching upon things like a trip up to Hoover Dam or anything outside off the beaten path. All of those are either on the Strip or in Downtown Las Vegas.

Enjoy!
Rob

PS: And for fine dining, I think Picasso's at the Bellagio blows Remy's away... (heresy on this board, I know. ;) )

Cirque's Zumanity (@ New York, New York) (adult only - might not recommend)
It is risque but I think it is the best Cirque out there. Perfect mix of old Vegas showy and new Vegas artsy.

Stratophere's slingshot. Gives you the amazing feeling of floating over the Vegas strip. In the top ten of my best experiences in my life.

Excalibur's Tournament of Kings. Our favorite dinner show. We even dressed up for it in medieval garb (and it was Vegas so no one batted an eye there or in the casinos and the clubs afterwards.).

You just have to do the research.
Have to disagree here. Don't do any research. Just go, wander, explore, you can't miss the excitement. My first trip I just wandered around and gaped at everything. Blew me away.

But again... after age twenty-one.

Wynn/Encore or Palazzo/Venetian are amazing resorts. Ive stayed at nearly all of them on the strip. Love VEGAS.

Beatles LOVE at the Mirage was really good.
