One day in Disneyland- picking my "Battles"

@BrianL posted a great list in this thread

Brian L's list

DL Exclusive Attractions:

Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye (uses same ride system as DINOSAUR at AK)
Snow White's Enchanted Wish
Pinocchio's Daring Journey
Mister Toad's Wild Ride
Casey Jr. Circus Train
Storybook Land Canal Boats
Alice in Wonderland
Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough
Roger Rabbit's Car-Toon Spin
Chip & Dale's Gadget Coaster
Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage
The Matterhorn (note this uses the same ride system as Space Mountain at MK)
Space Mountain (same theme but completely different ride)

DL Similar but not exactly the same:
Enchanted Tiki Room - longer show
Pirates of the Caribbean - longer with more show scenes
Haunted Mansion - even without the Nightmare overlay it is slightly different
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
Big Thunder Mountain - some additional effects and scenery
Autopia - much longer than the Tomorrowland Speedway, but basically the same
Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters - removable laser blasters make it a little better

DL Exactly (or basically) the same:
Peter Pan's Flight - technically some minor differences
Dumbo
King Aruthur Carousel
Milennium Falcn: Smugglers Run - all of Galaxy's Edge is practically identical
Rise of the Resistance
Mad Tea Party
Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway - The queue is very different and cool - may be new to you and is worth it if so.
Star Tours
Astro Orbitor - though at ground level

CA Exclusive Attractions:
Monsters Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue
Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout - based on Tower of Terror, though the DL version works a little differently
WEB Slingers
Radiator Springs Racers - this is like a massively bigger Test Track
Luigi's Rollicking Roadsters
Incredicoaster
Inside-Out Emotional Whirlwind
Silly Symphony Swings - though this is an off-the shelf "wave swinger" ride
Jumpin' Jellyfish
Golden Zephyr
Goofy's Sky School

CA Similar but not exactly the same:
Mater's Junkyard Jamboree - the same as Alien Swirling Saucers
Grizzly River Run - longer version of Kali River Rapids - definitely a wet ride!

CA Exactly (or basically) the same:
Mickey's Philharmagic! - smalelr screen though
Turtle Talk with Crush
Ariel's Undersea Adventure - same as Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid
Jessie's Critter Carousel
Soarin' - though note sometimes they run it with the original Sorain' over California, in which case it is a must do!
This is very informative. Thanks so much!

I would take away Soarin and Midway Mania as they are identical to what is in Disney World.

Add Pirates of the Caribbean, the Disneyland version has 7 minutes (first half of ride) that are not in the Disney World ride.

I know I may get stoned for this but....I am not a huge Pirates fan. But...if there isn't a long line, or maybe I can Genie my way onto it pretty easily, I may give it a try.

As for Soarin and Midway Mania- they happen to be two attractions that I quite love. So, they are sort of my exception to the Disney World rule, haha. If that makes any sense at all. Also, while I don't expect it to be Soarin over California.....on the off chance they have some sort of temporary special thing where it is Soarin over California, like someone said before, it becomes a clear must-do. That said, I will probably leave these two toward the bottom of the priority list as "If there's time" things.

I like your plans and agree with the posts above. add: I'd skip Casey jr and just do storybook canal, unless you have extra time. I'd definitely do buzz. so much better at DL. radiator springs racers single rider line is great! incredicoaster single-rider line is not so great, unless its improved recently. I'd skip soarin', midway mania and probably mission breakout

Great to know. I think I have been leaning toward the Canal boats versus the Casey Jr train, but they were sort of interchangeable in my mind. So, it's good to hear you confirm which way I was leaning.

Yes, I would purchase G+ and I would also purchase $ILL for Radiator Springs (edited, I forgot about the single rider line. I recall that it works sometimes and doesn't work well other times). Yes, your plan is very ambitious.

It's been a while since I've been to Disneyland, but here's what I would do (remove, maybe if time, must-do, added)

DL- Matterhorn, Space Mountain, Mr Toad, Carousel, Great Moments with Mr Lincoln, Snow White, Big Thunder Mountain, Railroad, Monorail, Davy Crockett Canoes, Nemo Submarine, Indiana Jones, Toontown, Either Casey Jr Train or the Storybook Canal Boats, Pirates, Small World, Alice in Wonderland.

Both Pirates and Small World are so much better at DL, I would not want to miss them. The Canoes are super cool, but they take a long time. Indy is good, but the line can be super long. I prefer the Canal Boats to Casey Jr, but frankly I prefer Alice in Wonderland to either one of them. The ones I removed are fine, but you are very limited on time.

CA- Grizzly River Run, Incredicoaster, Radiator Springs Racers, Soarin, Web Slingers, Animation Academy, Pixar Pal Around, Mission Breakout (this is actually the lowest on my CA priority list -- this is the best ride in DCA in my opinion and a must-do), Midway Mania, World of Color, Luigi's Rollicking Roadsters

I have a soft spot for Luigi's, so it would be on my must-do list. It may be too silly to be on yours. I've not been on Web Slingers, so I have no opinion. Guardians of the Galaxy is so much fun! It is my favorite ride in DCA. I wouldn't miss it for anything. Like in the MK, the ones I removed are fine, but you are very limited on time.

Wow, this is just perfect. So thorough and thoughtful. I will come back to this again and again.

Now, I will say, a number of your markouts- and you may have realized this too- are sort of....sentimental choices. They are for the Disney history nerd in me. The Imagineering Story weeper in me. When I tell you Mr Lincoln was probably #1 on my list....that should probably tell you all you need to know about me.

I will keep Pirates and Small World on the radar for sure. As far as Alice, are you able to put it into a sense of perspective for a Disney Worlder? Like...Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan's Flight, Journey of the Little Mermaid....where would you put it as far as the feel of it?

What time do you expect to be checked in to the GC and at the park gates? And what day of the week will it be? The Disneyland Resort will be back on its off-season hours in mid-January, with DL closing at 10:00 p.m. most nights, and DCA at 9:00. Maybe you weren't planning to stay in the parks later than that anyway, but take those times into consideration.

You have a good list of priority rides with the suggested modifications by other posters, such as adding Pirates. Be sure to take time to soak in the atmosphere of Walt's own park; don't just run from ride to ride!

Well, I am only there for one night, so I actually arrive the day of my check in. So...I will do online checkin, drop my bags off, and then head on over to get in the room at some point during a break in the day. It's a Tuesday, and there is actually a special event that night, so DL closes pretty early.

Yes, I understand that you are going the park the same day you're checking in at the GCH, but approximately when will you get to the park gates? If it's 8:00 a.m., we're going to give you different advice than if it's 1:00 p.m.

You have a pretty solid plan now, but we would chime in with some ideas for trimming it if your day is shorter than we've been assuming.

As far as Alice, are you able to put it into a sense of perspective for a Disney Worlder? Like...Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan's Flight, Journey of the Little Mermaid....where would you put it as far as the feel of it?

Winnie the Pooh is a great comparison to Alice IMO, the track and carts are very similar.

I know you said you weren't a fan of Pirates and I'm sure as a Disney Worlder you're hesitant to waste park time on Pirates or Small World. However, I will say: I cried when I found out that Pirates would be closed during my Disneyland trip. It is that much better than the WDW version. Small World at Disneyland is an entirely different ballgame, so massive and it has all of the Disney characters in it. I would honestly do Small World over Canal Boats or Casey Jr-- both cute but you wouldn't regret doing Small World instead.

You can definitely skip most of the other rides that you'd be able to do in WDW: BTMRR I felt was worse in DLR than it is in WDW, Haunted Mansion was just okay and definitely skippable if you aren't desperate to see the Hatbox Ghost, Jungle Cruise was nearly the exact same except the skipper had a gun for some reason. Space Mountain was Hyperspace Mountain when we went and it was a lot of fun but if you aren't going when it's Hyperspace, you can probably skip. Did not do Peter Pan's Flight in Disneyland but I also don't regret skipping it to do other attractions, especially Toad/Snow White/Pinocchio.

In DCA, I say skip Soarin' and The Little Mermaid. I had Mission Breakout on my low priority list as well but honestly had a lot of fun on it and wished I could have gone a second time. You cannot miss Incredicoaster or Radiator Spring Racers. I could have done without Midway Mania, it is very similar to DHS, but the Monsters Inc. ride was a lot of fun!

As someone who frequents WDW: I was extremely surprised with how much I was able to get done with Genie+. It was wild. I did basically every single ride in Disneyland on my first day and every single ride at DCA on my second day. It surprised me because I feel like Genie+ is functionally useless in WDW, sometimes it feels like I can only get 2-3 more rides done per day because of it. With Genie+ at DLR, I felt like I was able to accomplish basically everything in a day.

I don't know what your dietary preferences are like but my favorite meal in Disneyland was the fried chicken from Plaza Inn, this is quick service and if you get there when it opens for lunch it won't eat into too much of your day.

HAVE SO MUCH FUN! My visit to Disneyland was honestly the most special vacation of my life -- and I am a 16+ time WDW vet whose done 2 DCPs here on the East Coast! Drink in every moment and take lots of pictures :)

You do you! It's OK to prioritize stuff you love! I happen to absolutely love the Tiki Room and enjoying a Dole Whip float at the preshow at the Enchanted Tiki Garden while waiting for the show. But, I didn't mention it because the show itself is similar or identical to the WDW show.

As for Alice, it's like Pooh at WDW. Except you ride in a (non smoking) caterpillar and you go outside at some point. My second choice if you skip Alice is to do the canal boats.

Half your rides have a LL. Why would you want to spend 30ish min on each?

I would still do G+, it will save you significant time for the non single rider rides like Indiana (book this first when you enter), incredicoaster (single rider can get long u less you are there in the morning plus I personally prefer to ride this at night). I look at it like the WDW fast pass of yore - use it to “guarantee” your top 3 rides.

1) Agree with others to add pirates!

2) I would take away the following: Nemo, canoes (can take forever), monorail, and would choose storybook over Casey junior. At DCA remove: grizzly river run (unless you want to be cold and wet in January), Midway mania, soarin (Same as WDW), and don’t prioritize guardians of its not a top want.

3) yes, see above.

4) it’s ambitious but depending on your start time and use of G+ you can tackle most of not all. Without G+ I don’t think it’s doable as you will get stuck in at least 1 long line for the non single rider rides. Even single rider can be a wait and longer than a LL for rides like space and incredicoaster.

My suggestion would to be have your top priorities and then secondary ones. Focus on this top and add in as you can. Have a great day and definitely stop to smell the roses!!!

I did ultimately decide to purchase the Genie+. As someone else said, what's $30 (It was actually $28.50, so I felt like I was getting a deal, ha!) in the grand scheme of things? Now, I have the option of Single Rider or Lightning Lane.

I think Grizzly is going to be closed when I am there, which is fine. It sounded like it was pretty similar to Kali, so I am fine to miss it. I don't dislike Kali River Rapids, but it isn't a must-do for me either. However, it did seem like the reputation of Grizzly River Run seemed to be a bit more popular than KRR is at Animal Kingdom. So, I did wonder if there was maybe something about it that was worth checking out

Also, while I don't expect it to be Soarin over California.....on the off chance they have some sort of temporary special thing where it is Soarin over California, like someone said before, it becomes a clear must-do.

From the Disney Parks Website.

Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival (March 1-April 22): The gastronomic extravaganza serves up creative foods and beverages, cooking demonstrations and family-friendly entertainment inspired by the diverse cultures and cuisines of the Golden State. The popular attraction, Soarin’ Over California, also returns for a limited time during the festival.

That's cool that bringing back the original film has become a regular feature of the F&W Festival. Too bad that it's after the OP's trip. 😥

I'd add Genie+, it will give you some flexibility and you'll also get photopass with it which will come in handy if you're going solo. Definitely start with Disneyland. It's so magical and there's so much to do there. Have a great trip!

PS. Have you given any thought to where you want to eat? It might be good to have a few places in mind.

Awesome!! You'll have a fantastic day and get more done than you think I'm pretty sure. My family and I have always done 1-day trips and you can really pack in the activities.

1) Anything you would add/take away?
Canoes are a possible "leave it off" item. They don't do too much for me, ride the riverboat instead. On the Pal Around, do the non-swinging carriages and you can thank me later! Alice in Wonderland is a unique dark ride that's worth doing as well. Midway Mania and Soarin' are almost identical to WDW, maybe skip those? Also, Guardians is my favorite ride at the resort. I wouldn't cut that one unless you absolutely have to - it's a party lol.

2) Of the DL/DW duplicate rides, what's different enough that it's worth doing?
Pirates! Please do not skip our pirates. The line moves fastest of any in the park, and it's way bigger and better than the WDW version.

3) Do you think I need to add Genie?
Yes! Absolutely yes. Single rider is good, but during the middle of the day, Genie is almost always faster. Waiting an extra 25 minutes on 4 rides (or more sometimes!) is 2 hours out of your one day at the park. If you're staying at the grand, I'm assuming an extra $30 isn't gonna break the bank.

Of your list of rides, 11 are on Genie+. They are almost all decent lines without Genie. For a 1-day trip, that's absolutely worth the investment, in my opinion.

Be careful with the Matterhorn single-rider line, it can take forever! If less than 10 people are waiting outside the point where it "splits" into the 2 sides, it's probably safe to jump in. Genie+ is a safer bet. Space Mountain's SR opens after 11 AM, but is usually fairly quick. Rarely over 20 mins in my experience. Avoid the Incredicoaster single line, standby is usually faster lol. Genie is very fast on that one.

Racers breaks a lot, and single rider is very inconsistent (often still 45 minutes).

So, get ILL for Racers, and get Genie+. Don't single rider on Incredicoaster, and proceed with caution using single rider on Matterhorn. The other SR are fine, but Genie is almost always better.

4) Is my list too ambitious?
If you're going by yourself and are fast-paced, not at all. Especially with Genie. You can totally do it. The key will be staying until the bitter end - the "money is made" in the first 2 hours and the last 1 hour of the day. If you're going in a few weeks, the crowds and weather should be fantastic. If you get Genie and are smart with itinerary and single rider you can probably get 2-3 extra rides in on your favorites too. I'm pretty jealous :). Have a great trip!!

Great points. I did ultimately decide to purchase Genie. I think I was just relying maybe a bit too much on Single Rider as an option. I was so thrilled to see SO many rides with Single Rider in comparison to DW, that I was thinking this is awesome!

Thanks for the tip on Pal Around. I was intending to go with the swinging carriages, and upon your comment, I looked into it. I'm still undecided between swinging and non-swinging. But, at least now I know what I am getting myself into.

Just to be clear, you have one day, and you're going to park hop between DL & DCA? If that's the case, one thing I'd keep in mind is timing; some rides (& "lands") are much better at night. For example, Big Thunder at night is a different ride (at least for me) at night. On the other hand , Space Mountain, not so much. :) Cars Land is amazing during the day, but spectacular at night.
Jeff

Yes! I think for me, Radiator Springs at night is kind of the must-do as far as time of day goes.

Just be sure to check your lumbar spine at the gate before you ride Matterhorn and Space Mt. :)

Oh gosh...well at my age, I have been very, very lucky to not have many back troubles (knock on wood). So, hopefully I will be okay!

Not sure exactly what day you’ll be there, but Grizzly River Rapids is closed most of January.

Yes, I think it will be closed when I am there, which is fine. I can mark that off my list. I wasn't super enthusiastic about it anyway. More or less, just curious why it was considered such a good ride, whereas Kali River Rapids generally isn't. Wanted to quench that curiosity.

Skip Galaxy's Edge. It's a clone of what's at WDW. I love Midway Mania, but I am pretty sure it's the same version that WDW has. CarsLand is an absolute must. See it at night if you can.

Yeah, Galaxy's Edge was an easy markoff from the beginning. Especially knowing it is pretty much a carbon copy to Studios. Even if there would have been some slight differences, I likely would have left it off the list and it would have been a "save for a proper visit" kind of thing. It's just so dense and detailed.

Definitely take advantage of EE to get a running start. Besides, as a first-time visitor, you really should start at the original Disneyland Park (IMO).
Early entry has always worked pretty great for us over at World. So, I'm happy to use it at Land.

The only thing that had me on the fence was...in Florida, there are 4 different parks. So, I feel like crowds/congestion gets spread a little bit more. So, I wondered how much of a benefit the EE was in California. Granted, there are fewer hotels, so it may balance out.

Also, I kind of felt like I might be able to get more done, as far as the heavy hitters at CA in the morning.

Ultimately, Early entry tipped me over the edge, and I started at Disneyland.

Will you be going by Jan 7th or after? Are you going to see parades, fireworks too?

Is there a way for you to include an extra day at the Disneyland Resort?

I would prefer to start at Disneyland over DCA as that's the original park that has been designed well.

I will be there after January 7. Probably not planning to do parades or (m)any shows. World of Color maybe, but I don't believe it will be showing when I am there.

Originally, and according to the official website, it's not planned to be showing. But, other news reports said the refurbishment was shortened. So, that's TBD.

As far as parades and shows....I feel like those are things to save for a full Disneyland vacation.

No, no way to add a day. I'm just going to do what I can in the time I have and be grateful for whatever I am able to get done.

Start at Disneyland and book Indiana Jones LL first thing. Knock off some non LL rides like fantasyland and pirates during the morning lull. Also remember park hopping is completely different than at WDW. For context it takes longer to walk from the turnstiles to the bus lines at WDw than to cross the esplanade.

Have a great day!!!

Yes, I do think it will be interesting to see how the Park hopping experience is. Although, on one hand, I would like to take advantage of the Grand Californian private entrance...I may not get a chance this time around.

Ah.

I am hoping to get there around 7, 7:15, 7:30 ish. My train gets in at 6:10 am. So....depending on how long it takes to get from the train station to Grand Californian. Then, will drop off my bags, and then head to the gates.

Point being...it will be early. It will definitely be an open-to-close day, with the exception of a possible nap break.

Have I thought about where I want to eat? Have I thought about where I want to eat? Is the Pope Catholic?

Not only have I thought about it....I've looked at menus, read reviews, watched YT videos, and done mock Mobile Orders. Haha.

That said, I am a bit picky, and I don't want to waste time doing a big sit-down meal.

So, I have narrowed it down to: Churro for breakfast. 2319 drink at Lamplight Lounge. Mint julep and beignets. Schwarma cart. Maybe the Jolly Holiday macaroon. (I love macaroons but don't generally like white chocolate) I am certainly open to other suggestions. I'm not super-thrilled with Mobile Order. It feels like WDW allows customization much easier than DL does. I see very few dishes where items can be left off a sandwich, for example.

Again, I'm open to other ideas!

I think you made the right choice to do Genie+ based on your DL ride list- Space and Indiana Jones do not always have single rider available. There are also rides on your CA list that it will work for. It might be extremely helpful in getting your list done. I think it is easier to pick up a Genie+ when you are only looking for a party of one. I think you can get your list done and probably more-especially as a party of one- we have done that much before

Starting at DL, you can probably knock out Nemo and the Fantasyland things pretty quickly before the lines start building up. I would definitely add the Alice in Wonderland ride to your list- it is a dark ride-- same type concept as Pooh- but I would say it is a lot better than WDW's Pooh (and I do like Pooh) I would probably delete the Davy Crockett Canoes unless you have a love for actually canoeing or kayaking- it looks like a lot of fun in theory-- but you will be paddling-- after a few minutes we were laughing and wondering why we were doing when we expend enough effort walking all over DLR. Also, Matterhorn is VERY rough--- we usually do that one about once every 3 years--- it is one of those "We haven't ridden it in a while and they did do maintenance on it lets try it--- and after "Ouch--- why did we do that-- not doing it again for a while". The DLR version of Pirates is far superior to the WDW version- but if you aren't a fan, you aren't. We actually like DLR's BTMRR and Space Mountain better than WDW's version. If you are there January 7, Haunted Mansion should still be operating with the Nightmare Before Christmas overlay. Unless you have Nightmare Before Christmas or Haunted Mansion, that is one not to miss. HM will be closing for a lengthy refurbishment while they re-do the grounds a couple of weeks after your trip. The Monorail basically runs from Tomorrowland close to the far end of Downtown Disney. The Train would be something fun at DLR for the interior scenes that run on the path between Toontown and the front of the park.

As for CA, Radiator Springs is very easy as a single rider. We have seen a 120 minute standby line and been on in 15 minutes or less. If you have time, I would recommend doing that once during daylight hours and once at night-- it is a whole different ride. We often do single rider with only a 5 or 10 minute wait-- and I would think you are going after the holiday crowds and likely won't have that crowded of a day. The Incredicoaster single rider line is hit or miss-- you might be better of with Genie + there.

Have a great trip!

Ahh- my favorite DL breakfast-- get the churro at the cart in front of the castle-- for some reason they are always the best. Your choices would all be on my list- except I haven't tried the macaron. I also am not a white chocolate fan if the current version is heavy on that. You don't have to use mobile order-- there is usually a walk up line almost everywhere. We did not have much luck with mobile order - walk ups were getting food before we were--- so our trip this past September we almost exclusively used the walk up lines and had no issues. We find the counter service at DLR, is much better than the counter service at WDW-- which should make it pretty easy on a one day trip to get food without losing as much time as table service. I will say that in the last couple of years, it is hard to get them to make any changes or substitutions to any food items. It is not like it used to be. You can always ask-- but expect that you may hear no.

Maybe the Jolly Holiday macaroon. (I love macaroons but don't generally like white chocolate) I am certainly open to other suggestions.
I like the Baymax macaroon at Fortune Cookery in DCA. It is vanilla with hazelnut.

I think both of those are actually macarons (almond flour), not macaroons (shredded coconut). It's an important difference for people who (1) have tree-nut allergies or (2) don't like coconut.

Jolly Holiday actually has both! They usually have a seasonal or specialty macaron, but also the Matterhorn Macaroon, which has white chocolate on it and is really good.
