I still think having blimps at sporting events that are played inside is a waste ... but good for Disney I guess

That's exactly it. Goodyear doesn't charge the league to run them, it's just part of Goodyear's advertising budget.
I've heard this story from multiple people, but I never researched it, so take it with a grain of salt.
After the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, a survey was conducted to see what advertising people remembered. The most reported answer was the Goodyear Blimp. Goodyear hadn't sent any blimps, it was a blimp donated by Kroger. So flying around for a TV audience of thousands pays off.
