New TSA rules

I don't envision pulling out more electronics than before as a big hardship for each individual - BUT this will make the overall security line move slower than ever, now.

As someone who avoids flying at all costs and does it maybe once every 3 years... what is pre-check exactly and what is that process like? Does it cost money and is it worth it if I rarely fly?
Pre-check is expedited TSA screening essentially. You don't have to take off your shoes and take everything out of your bag. It is usually a much quicker line. Pre-check costs $85 and lasts something like 3 years. If you fly only once every three years I don't think it would be worth it.

I'll have to check again if my work will pay for Pre-Check. I think it was yes for Pre-Check no for Global Entry, but I'm not sure. This doesn't change anything for me (only ever have a laptop, if anything), but it will make the lines worse.

...especially in and out of touristy hubs

I might be crazy but I need to get it for my kid too. He flies more than I do and I'm pretty sure they won't let me use my KTN to get both of us through on a non passenger escort. The idealistic side of me hates the idea of funding an overblown government agency just to be treated like a human. The practical side of me says throw money at the situation and get over it.

How old is your kid?

He's 11 and travels Southwest as UM. Next year, he'll be able to (finally) not fly UM so I'll probably need to get him an ID anyway. I plan to ask the desk agents at MDW when i'm there in a couple weeks to see what they say about using my KTN on any NPE pass. My hunch is that they'll say "it depends" which is not 100% guaranteed. MDW can be great at some times, total zoo at others, so I want to minimize that especially as he ages out of needing UM.

I know it says to use the KTN for booing travel. Now what if I have a flight booked already, can I add it to that?

Depends on the airline. SW you have to call to add, DL and AK you can add online. Not sure about the others. Going forward just have it on your profile for the airline.

I know you can not use your KTN for him when booking as it is your number and only your number. The names won't match up so it won't give him pre-check and if you do it too much it will actually kick you out of the program. At 11 though whenever you are with him and you have pre-check he can go with you through the pre-check line until he is 12. I would say go ahead and get it for him since he travels quite a bit. You most certainly can get him his own number and input it into the system when booking. Again it has to be his own number not yours.

Not sure on this. We fly SWA all the time and I am almost certain that we entered our numbers on line. We are Rapid Rewards members though, so it is possible that we added the numbers to that account which automatically included it with our reservations.

Sorry yeah, I guess most people don't realize what the UM process entails. I wouldn't be using it for him. When you take a minor to a flight, you get a non passenger escort pass from the agents. In fact you can get it just about any time that passenger might need supervision getting to the gate, so maybe someone with an intellectual disability or injured, elderly, that kind of thing. That allows you to go back to the gate. In my mind, even though I'm not travelling, I should be able to use my KTN on my non passenger escort pass because I paid for pre-check. In reality I'm sure it's probably a big fat no.

You are right. My mother flew in from Pittsburgh this past Christmas and I had to go to the gate to get her. Even though I had a KTN, I still had to use the regular TSA line. Could only use the Pre Check if you were a passenger.

Sorry you just kept saying use my number for him on a UM so it wasn't clear that you were getting yourself an escort pass. I know UM who just walk in on their own even at that age because they fly all the time so to me I took it that you drop ihm off and watch him go through security then he is on his own after that didn't realize you were also getting the passenger escort pass.

If the pass has a way to put the KTN in then perhaps they can do it but if not then the system won't allow. I know the system has to have time to match your name to the KTN and then print Pre-Check on it so since you do the non-passenger escort pass at the airport I'm not sure if it would have the needed time to process the KTN for pre-check.

If you have a SW ticket booked you have to call. I've read numerous with that info. Also, my friend had her SW tix booked for our trip last Nov and I told her to call. She didn't only added it online and didn't get Precheck on either flight.

It all has to do with when the airline pulls the passenger info to send to tsa. Some will see the updates online and others don't.

There's a thread somewhere, prob transportation that I read about swap last fall. Maybe it's changed.

yeah so they take your ID and all that, verify your identity. Maybe it would work then. I planned on asking anyway but it would be nice if it really did work.

Southwest has an area on their site to update reservations with the KTN

I knew it. That's so incredibly annoying.

For paid UM, you must take them to the gate. For just minors who fly alone, 12-17 on Southwest they can go to the gate themselves. But I don't trust mine to do that just yet. I think he'd get distracted on the way there and miss the flight.
