Luggage reclaim domestic flights

We have always flown into MCO direct from U.K. and therefore collect our luggage after immigration but airside before getting on the monorail.
This trip we are coming via Boston where we will do our immigration and then we will travel by Delta on a domestic flight.
Am I correct in assuming that we will be doing the monorail first and that luggage reclaim is landside near the check in desks?

Baggage claim is nowhere near the check in desks. There's a sticky posted at the top of the transportation board that details the airport specifically, including where to go to reclaim luggage.

Yes, baggage claim at Orlando International Airport (MCO) is the on the second level of the main terminal building, this is where you would pickup luggage for all domestic flights. Take people mover train from airside to main terminal and then proceed down the escalators to the second level for baggage claim.

Your gate concourse (airside terminal) should show "Side A" or "Side B". After you take the tram (monorail, people mover) you get off in the main terminal and pass by the security checks and then come out into the open. Now look both ways left and right. You should see in the distance large (3 foot) green neon A and/or B on the wall. If you see the letter for your gate area walk towards it and as far as you can go. If you see the wrong letter, turn the other way with that letter at your back and walk as far as you can. Now you should see the stairs and/or escalators down to your baggage claim area.

Baggage claim is approximately directly below (on the floor below) the ticketing and baggage check in counters.

Thanks for all your replies. That is what I thought although on every other trip we have just walked past the area without taking any notice on our way to DME.

If you have to clear or reclear customs/immigration in Orlando, the process is normally the same as for clearing or preclearing customs in any connection city including Boston or Toronto.

Possible sporadic irregularities at Orlando customs might be 1. Passengers required to manually schlep their bags out of the customs station and onto the tram and DME baggage service is unavailable at any hour, or 2. Passengers required to put their bags on the other conveyor belt and, if they are not Disney bound or if it is after 10 PM, re-retrieving their bags at the carousels.

Since you’re clearing customs in Boston and effectively rechecking your bags, you could take advantage of Disney’s baggage service- they’ll collect your bag from reclaim and deliver it to your (Disney) resort hotel room (no charge, but tip the bellman if you’re there when he drops the bags).
As international visitors we don’t get the tags so although we will land on a domestic airline we will probably do the same as when landing internationally and take our bags on DME with us. We’re used to it but thanks for the tip and as frequent travellers we are used to your tipping system and it’s worth every dollar.

My experience is you have the choice of schlepping bags on the tram OR putting your bags on the conveyer and picking them up at the carousels. We tend to pick the former.

Thanks but we won’t have any customs to clear at MCO we will arrive as any other domestic passengers after doing all the customs and immigration at Boston.
We are fine with the self-handling of baggage but have never arrived at MCO from another USA airport before.

Off topic, but the automated trains are not monorails. They rubber-tired, small train cars. Essentially automated buses. I used to work for the company that made them.
You see I’m the kind of person who loves a bit of trivia. I’ll be pulling this gem out for years.

We'll be the same, clearing customs at LAX (from Sydney) then bag drop just after customs for our next flight. We just follow the crowd to regular baggage claim and take them from there.

As was previously posted, there are 2 sides to Orlando Airport - A and B. Check in is on level 3, baggage claim is on level 2, and Magical Express is on level 1 on the B side. If you arrive on A side, you need to go down to level 2 to get your bags, then go back up to level 3, cross over from A to B side, and then go down to level 1 on the B side to catch Magical Express.
