Las Vegas Strip resorts

My DD's national competition final will be held there early next spring, and I'm wondering how to handle our lodging. We often stay where the team does (except when it's overpriced or a dump), but in this case the teams will be required to stay at the Orleans as part of the agreement for the rink use, and they are pretty sure there will not be extra rooms available (The event involves about 1200 athletes from age 6 through adult.) So, we will need something that is relatively convenient to the Orleans.
As others said, there are a couple of non-Casino hotels near the Orleans, but they're not anything particularly exciting. The Orleans is big--it has 1,866 hotel rooms--so I wouldn't automatically assume that an event with 1200 athletes will fill it.

I think that The Palms was also a good suggestion, but if you wanted to stay on-strip for better access to restaurants and other activities, I would take a look at either Vdara or Park MGM. Vdara is a non-Casino (and non-smoking) hotel on the strip that is within the City Center Complex next to Bellagio and Aria, and importantly has easy access to exit onto Harmon Ave so you can get a cab over to the Orleans without hitting much traffic. Park MGM is a bit further south but is also non-smoking and has pretty easy access to the roads that go to the Orleans.

Rio would be close. The strip traffic can be nasty so I would avoid strip hotels.
The once-great Rio is shabby and run down, and in the midst of a huge renovation to hopefully bring it back. Take a look at some YouTube videos. The place is a ghost town, and whatever people are there are waiting in hour long check-in lines. It is cheap, however. I'd strongly recommend anyone stay away until it's back up and running.

It's so sad that the Rio has deteriorated into it's current state. I remember back when the buffet was really good, and the "eye in the sky" show was so clever (and they threw beads!) Last time we were there it was a shadow of it's former self. I hope they do refurb it

They're working on it. When it opened, it was a major reason to venture and stay off-strip. It was really big news.

Is there an estimated finish date for Rio? I am looking at staying there. I’m not after the strip experience, and this one looked like it had a great backroad way to get to Omega Mart (our main draw to the area).
