Jambo! The newest AKL Information thread

We just got back from a long trip, 9/29 - 10/7, and our first stay at AKL. I wanted to share our experience! We rented DVC points for a savanna-view studio in Jambo House. We absolutely loved it. It's such a great resort for kids (my daughter turned five on our trip), I don't know why Disney doesn't market it that way more often. She loved doing the activities that are available throughout the resort, especially the animal enrichment one where she got to put worms into toys for the savanna birds to "hunt". The animal specialist that supervised the activity then took the toys out to the savanna so the kids could see the birds using what they made. It was really neat, and the folks running the activities had endless patience for small kids who can't read but want to pretend they can, had a million questions, and generally didn't really want to follow the directions. :rotfl2:

Even though I stay pretty current with Disney Parks info, my brain can't seem to maintain resort info, so I'm not up on what all the trails are called or what would be an indication that our room was renovated or not. I think we were in the Giraffe trail? Room 5310. I can tell you that it was very far from the lobby, which always stinks after a long park day or when you want to go get something to eat, but we're used to it by now at Disney. I always request "Close to Lobby" at every resort we stay in and never get it! I think POFQ is calling our name for our next visit!

We did have the new big bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in our room. But we also had the small body lotion bottles next to the sinks! (And bar soap, of course) I know that was something I was concerned about as it had been reported that some people weren't getting them anymore.

We also had trash service almost every day. There was a card in our room noting that this was a new service they were providing to DVC rooms since they are doing daily room checks now.

I know there's a lot of back and forth on the bus service from AKL, especially to MK. I went into it opened minded, knowing that you can experience weird blips and delays for the buses from anywhere. But honestly, we did see kind of crappy service to MK. We would sit there at the MK stop and watch three buses go by for Epcot, four for Hollywood, two for Animal Kingdom, and none for MK. While the crowd built and built. This happened several times, not a one-off. We would absolutely stay at AKL again, the bus service is no reason to not stay there, but would definitely plan lots of extra time to get to MK. On the other hand, bus service to the other three resorts seemed really consistent and fast.

We also got a bit tired of Mara after awhile. We loved the food there, it was fantastic (especially the falafel platter!), but we wished for another quick service option. We solved it by ordering food from the parks on our way out on a few nights and bringing it back to the room to heat up and eat later. The DVC room was really nice in that regard — having the microwave, toaster, and sink was so helpful! We ate at Jiko and Sanaa while we were there and the food at both was excellent. It was our first time at Jiko and if I had to choose between the two (Sanaa being a favorite of ours) I would choose Jiko! The food and service were both so amazing.

Lastly, every single CM we encountered at AKL was wonderful. So kind and knowledgable. We really really loved our stay here. We are trying to stay at all of the resorts eventually, but AKL is going to be really hard to top! Since this got so long I'll share some room and resort photos in the next post.

I am so glad you had a great time! None of the DVC rooms are part of the current renovation, these villas were all renovated a couple years ago.

There is so much to do around the resort, it is fantastic.

I think much of the MK bus issue is just that they fill up picking up guests at Kidani, I wish they ran separate buses to MK from Kidani and Jambo, especially in the morning, I think it would really go a long way.

Jiko is my favorite restaurant on property, glad you enjoyed.

Random question, did the TV being off center from the bed bother you? We plan to rent DVC points and that's the only thing I dislike about the room.

Not at all but we don't watch much TV while at Disney! We mostly put on Disney Jr. when we wanted my daughter to wind down, and it was centered for her bed (the pull-out couch). We also put on Must-Do Disney and the info channel (for the music) while we are unpacking/packing, but we are moving around then, so again, didn't bother us. :)

Hi! Sorry no advice on the rooms (I stayed in a pool view room once which was super close to everything and Kidani which was a marathon walk everyday). In terms of alcohol, just watch the Strawberry Margaritas. My wife hates the taste of any alcohol but she loves those and starts to fell really good after a couple. Don't want your daughter getting smacked up drinking those!
Actually, that’s great to know! Thx

I hope you have a wonderful time. If you are experienced w/ the distances at CBR, AKL should be manageable. The walk up to the bus stop has a slight incline, try it & if it’s too much after a day at the parks then switch to driving.
Have you considered doing one of the special animal programs? Lunch w/ an animal specialist at Sanaa, the pricey but so worth it Wanyama safari, the night time AKL drive through the savannas, or one of the AK programs?
The most convenient savanna view rooms that minimize walking would likely be on Zebra trail near the elevators, on this map that would be the second pod of rooms which overlook Arusha savanna or even the pod that juts out from Zebra trail separating the pool & Uzima savanna.

Thank you so much, this is definitely helpful. I will check into those activities. I’m starting to relax what will be will be it’s all magic for her! Thank you!

Hi, can you add us to the list. We will be staying at AKL Jambo House from Aug 19-28 2020. It will be our family trip. We fell in-love with AKL Jambo House 3 years ago and thought Jambo House would be the perfect place to take engagement pictures.

We checked out on Sunday from a Savanna view room on Zebra 3rd floor. It was a renovated room on the wing adjacent to the pool facing Uzima (requested Arusha). All rooms past the wing to the pool/elevator were still blocked off. We could see construction vehicles but since we were there on the weekend they were never working. Saw soooob many animals and loved our view and room location!
thank you

We're about to buy plane tickets for our January trip and I'm realizing that I need to move my check-out day breakfast at Boma a little earlier. If our flight leaves MCO at 2:30, what time will Magical Express pick us up? And, assuming we will be packed and ready to go before we go to Boma, what time would you make your breakfast/brunch reservation? THANKS!

Depends if you are domestic or international. Rule of thumb is 3 hours for domestic, 4 hours for international.

We're domestic. So we'll probably be picked up around 11:30 then? I definitely need to move my Boma reservation...I want to have time to really enjoy it...9:30? 10? We were basing our brunch plans on when we flew home last time...but the 4 pm flight no longer exists. (though not nearly as annoying as the fact that the flights have nearly doubled in costs in the 3 years since we were last at Disney )

I would just be on the safe side and do 9:30. There is so much to see at AKL so if you’re done early and waiting, you won’t be bored. I would rather not be rushed.

Thanks - that's what I was thinking. Thankfully I figured it out now and not closer to our trip when we can't change our ADR!

Hi, trying to figure out what area to request for our early December trip. Are Zebra trail and Kudu trail still under construction? We have a standard room booked, and plan on requesting a standard with a partial savannah view. Thank you in advance.

We are so excited to stay a AKL for the second time April 9-18.
Last year during spring break we were fully prepared for bad bus service because that’s what you hear about AKL. I honestly didn’t think it was bad at all. Two out of 24 bus trips left us waiting a while. Magic kingdom isn’t close but it never really felt long. The other parks were fast enough.

I have only stayed at AKL one time but I never felt the bus service was terrible. For me, as long as I have a ride someplace I am happy. I think that most resorts are located a distance from at least one park, and travel should be factored in. We generally use Lyft when we want to leave the resort o have dinner at another resort, the money is minimal, and the time is worth it.

I agree. We have stayed at AKL multiple times, and I never felt that the bus service was bad. We have stayed everything from value to deluxe, and have had pretty much the same bus service everywhere. We have had to wait 30 min or more for buses in rare cases, but the vast majority of the time they run consistently. If we are dressed for dinner, or need to be somewhere on a tight time schedule, we will drive or take an uber or lyft.
