9 AM, Saturday, July 9 Advisory/Discussion Update

This will be the last update, because Dennis is not expected to threaten the WDW area.

The projected track has moved farther offshore of Florida, and the storm is now projected to make landfall in the area of the Florida/Alabama border Sunday afternoon.

The storm currently carries estimated winds of about 95 mph, which the NHC says is a "generous" estimate. However, it expected to strengthen to 120 mph in 24 hours, and to 130 mph by landfall in the US.

That is still a very dangerous storm, so if you live anywhere in the Watch/Warning areas, I would certainly keep a close eye on the storm. You also have to remember that hurricanes are very broad weather systems, and you could experience 60 mph winds 100 miles from the center of the storm...or even farther.

If you want the latest accurate information, turn OFF the TV and go to www.nhc.noaa.gov

Thanks a ton for the info, we fly in Saturday (7/9) afternoon and are planning to drive down and visit family in Sarasota Sunday (7/10) before our BWV stay for the week (7/10 to 7/18).

I'll keep watching your thread! Thanks again.

Welcome, but the best thing to watch is the NHC website I provided above. With a little luck, I'll be flying out to D.C. myself Saturday morning.

Thanks! -- I knew there was a reason why we couldn't trust them!!!!

Seriously, thanks for the info & update! :)

OK, we are coming in via SWA Thursday morning from CT just ahead of "Cindy" and right before "Dennis, looking at all the projections it looks like we'll be OK, also Dennis should be gone by the time we leave 07/16/05.

As long as we can get in and get out, I'm OK, unless "Dennis" pulls a right turn, that would really stink.

Anyone else leaving in the next couple of days?

Cindy has been downgraded to a Tropical Depression and is several hundred miles northwest of WDW. She's just a rainstorm now and you'll probably be offshore coming down from CT anyway, so you won't even know she's there.

The current projections show Dennis being about level with Orlando Saturday night/Sunday morning. The official forecast is for 100 kt winds then, which is 119 mph, but it's really hard to predict intensity accurately that far out. As I said above, one of the models shows 140 mph winds by Friday morning.

Whatever happens, you will be able to get in and out unless the storm does something crazy.

We are leaving for WDW on Sunday night! I sure hope this thing goes anywhere else for next week! :umbrella: Well, it wil be our first stay at OKW (our NEW home! :Pinkbounc ) and WL!! I guess we'll learn all about WL if we get the rain... :umbrella:

Keep watching the weather -- or better yet, the NHC website linked above.

It's way too early to really tell, but IF the storm behaves EXACTLY as they are projecting currently, probably the worst weather in Disney will be Sunday night.

Once the storm gets past you, you usually get most of a day with semi-crummy weather as the feeder bands move through, but not a lot of wind. The next several days after that are usually spectacular weather, because the hurricane sucks up all the moisture in that part of the world.

Hopefully, the storm will move more out into the middle of the Gulf and you won't be affected, but that's not what the computer models currently say.

Like I said, we have never stayed (or visited) the WL, so I am looking forward to getting to know it well!

we are scheduled to arrive at MCO 11am for our first trip home at OKW. Can anyone tell me how the airlines handle these situations besides not flying? TIA

depends on the winds, catergory of the storm, etc. There should be expected delays for anyone planning on flying into and out of Florida during the time if it is close enough to Orlando. All it takes is one delayed plane to back up the rest. I will send some pixie dust your way! :wizard: Good luck! :sunny:

If it gets really bad, they relocate all the aircraft and their respective crews to another city. That means that things can be REALLY slow getting "up and running" after a storm. I would be prepared for quite a few MCO evacuations of aircraft this summer....it sounds like it will be a "lively" time.

They usually stop flying prior to the arrival of tropical storm force winds (39 mph) -- which means they stop flying IN several hours prior, because if they are going to repo the aircraft, they have to get in, refuel, and get out. Depending on the flight crew's status, that might mean a new crew.

With regard to passengers, I think all of the major airlines waive their rescheduling fees. I know American does, and they usually waive for quite a broad range of dates. Airlines are not really required to do anything as a result of weather problems, but they are usually very good in extreme situations in the affected areas.

We've been to WDW 4 times in July, including this trip. This will be our last summer trip. At least that what I'm saying now.

Why would anyone want to go to Florida in the Summer anyway, that's the question I always get, I mean it's nice here in CT.

T minus 16 hours and counting.

Yeah...but you're counting, aren't you? :rotfl2:

And I'm counting too. We live in NE CT and fly out of PVD, supposed to arrive 1:25pm on Saturday. I'll be watching SWA's website too. We aren't scheduled to check into BWV until Sunday (saving those precious points ya know).
Wish us pixie dust.

We fly out of Chicago to Orlando Sat at 7 in the morning. I just want to get in and settled and then I don't care what kind of weather we have -- at least I'm not at work or home. LOL
