Hi all. We just got back from our first trip to Hilton Head. We had a 2BR 2813and a studio for a friend 2812 who played golf with my DH this past week. Our rooms were in a great location for us - just off the pool area, but not in the fray. Had it not been so windy we would have preferred rooms with a view - but I actually asked them for a first level room so that my daughter who had just had hip surgery didn't have so many stairs to climb. As it turned out, our location at the backside had the advantage of being protected from the winds - so we were fine. Our specific room had some issues, but they came immediately when I called. Overall I thought the resort was lovely.

We flew into Charleston on Friday night and spent a full day there a week ago Saturday. I really wanted to see a plantation and more of the city's history, but my family wasn't buying it. I really regret that I didn't fight harder. I didn't do the research because I thought we were going to high tail it down to HH.....but I would do it differently next time.

Friday we stayed overnight at the Courtyard Marriott and we ate dinner at AW Shucks in downtown Charleston. It was fantastic. We shared She crab soup, blue crab dip, clams, crab cake, etc. Afterwards we walked across the street to a market place that is open all day and then some vendors come in at night. The girls had a great time there. We came back on Saturday to get a few more things (great bags and jewelry).

We didn't realize it, but the Family Cup Tennis tournament was played April 13-15 nearby (James Island or Kiawah Island?) and we could have gone on Saturday had we done our research beforehand. It was also the weekend of the Verizon Heritage Golf tournament at Sea Pines on Hilton Head. We just stayed away from that end of the island that first weekend, but the traffic was not a problem during our stay.

Saturday afternoon it turned chilly and we headed south to Hilton Head (2 hours). The weather was not so great (windy and chilly) on Sunday and we hung out in the room for the most part. Monday was still chilly and windy. Tuesday was sunny so we ventured to the beach.

The beach is fantastic - incredibly wide and you can walk for miles and miles. We found 8-10 sand dollars within a few minutes and they are here at home ready for their bleaching (use alcohol first which turns them green!). We rented the chairs and umbrellas for two days (6 chairs/2 umbrellas) which came to about $136. It was expensive - but if the weather were nicer it definitely would have been worth it.

Disney's Beach House is great. It's wonderful having the pool, food and facilities there. We ate lunch at the beach house several times despite the wind and chilly temps. We drove some days, took the shuttle others and I rode bikes there with my 7 year old one day.

My DH played golf at four courses - Great Bear, Port Royal, The Shipyard and Palmetto Dunes. He called a "Last Minute Tee Time" every night at 7pm and was able to get discounted tee times for the next morning at a number of courses. He was disappointed that they weren't able to play the Robert Trent Jones course, but the discounted greens fee were too good to pass up at the other courses. See his notes below.

We ate dinner at Redfish which was superb, Just Pasta which the kids and my DH loved (unfortunately my shrimp scampi had too much basil in it and tasted like soap water) and at Mia Terra (fabulous mexican food, surprisingly spacious restaurant hidden from the street, fun colors). We ate our other meals in our room as well as breakfast each day.

We had our best weather day on Thursday and we spent it by the pool. My 7year old DD and I went on the dolphin boat ride and although we didn't see many dolphins that particular day - we did see a mom and baby and we were out in the boat for nearly 2 hours. This same DD loved the kids night out - one was pizza and movies (at the theater) and the 2nd night was pizza and games/arcade at the Beach House. She did several crafts as well.

We rented bikes and did a few long rides, but the weather cramped our enjoyment of that particular activity as it did the campfire which was cancelled because of wind one night.

Overall we had a great trip. I loved the resort and would definitely return. The island is a bit different, however, from what we've experienced in other resort locations in that things were hard to find because all the signage is so low key and there are very few lights! Island planners have done a very good job preserving the "green" on the island - it just makes it a bit difficult for visitors to find things without a good address and a decent map, but we managed.

There were numerous shops in small shopping areas all over the island - even a mall! One of my teens got some great bathing suits at "Too Cool", but we didn't venture out to shop much.

We loved the Pirate's mini-golf.....and didn't like the Legendary mini golf nearby.

I have a copy of the two page activities schedule that they gave us at check-in. This would be helpful to those who haven't been to HH yet - so you know what to expect. I'm going to try to figure out a way to post it, but if I can't - pm me and I'll send it to you.

Here's the golf info:

1. Palmetto Dunes - Arthur Hills course:

http://www.palmettodunes.com/AHillsCourse.aspx

$70 - most challenging with lots of water hazards, but in the best shape and the most fun. VERY fast greens and rolling fairways.

2. Shipyard - Brigadoon and Clipper:

http://www.shipyardgolfclub.com/showsite.asp

$59 - fairways and greens in great condition (best greens all week) - nice layout with a lot of water and alligators galore. Elderly starter who was a control freak.

3. Port Royal - Barony:

http://www.portroyalgolfclub.com/ShowSite.asp?menu=golfcourse&nav=course1

$59 - fairways not as good condition but greens in good shape. Nice course.

4. Indigo Run Golden Bear:

http://www.goldenbear-indigorun.com/

$72 - fairways dry, way too many fairway bunkers, not very interesting layout. GPS on the golf carts was a nice touch.

We were able to get 9:00 AM tee times using Last Minute Tee Times the night before with prices that beat the Disney Guest Services Prices (used LMT for all but the Golden Bear course). Almost all courses had availability depending on what time of day you wanted to play but the savings were greatest in the mornings (where the prices were up to 50% off).

Hope this is helpful info for first time HH travelers.:)

I am glad you had a great tiime. HH is one of our favorite places too. I was sad to read that you had removed so many sanddollars from the beach. It is posted everywhere that you are not to remove sealife (living creatures which sanddollars are) from the beach. If you had taken one, perhaps I could understand but I'm afraid you should not have taken all that you did. We usually search until we find one that is dead(no cilia left on it Imagine if everyone took as many as you did. Please come and enjoy HH often, but please do not disturb the environment that we all love.

Sorry, but we did not see a single posting. We were only on the beach two days for a few hours and walked up and back from the Beach House. I read a few signs for sure and I'm a big one for "rules" but didn't see anything about "sea creatures". We would never have even known about them except while we were walking another DVC family was collecting them and had my daughter join them....so we weren't the only ones who didn't understand.

I don't appreciate the assumption that I did it on purpose. And I said sand dollars NOT starfish - although I assume they both should not be collected. And some of them were in all likelihood dead considering how far up from the water (30+ feet) they were found.

Thanks for the report. We just got back from our first trip to HH a couple of weeks ago. We loved the pirate's minigolf as well. Just curious why you did not like the Adventure golf close by. We thought about trying that but just tried the other course at the pirate's golf. We loved the dolphin cruise. Our captain was great.

We will definately be returning to HH. :)

Actually because it was so dark we turned into the wrong mini course on our way home from dinner. We wanted to play an extra night at the pirate's course which is the one closer to the resort. We ended up at the one further down (Legendary golf owns it now) if that's the adventure course and by the time we got out of the car - we just decided to stay there.

There were so many mini water hazards and "rock" traps that it was frustrating for our 7 year old. My DH and his golfing buddy actually got the two worst scores of our group of 6! That particular day they had both lost 12or more balls to the water and wind at one particular course - so they were fried.

I personally like the music, the different levels and the running water at the pirate's course.

Thanks for the report. DH really appreciates the golf report. He always golfs once or twice when we go to HH, hasn't tried the last minute tee times yet though.

The sign that talks about the sea creatures is located as you walk off the stairs or come from under the beach house. its a 3 x 5 billboard that looks like a pool rules sign. It says all that can't be done, from alcohol, flying kites, sailboarding, etc.

not making any judgements, just letting folks know where they can read it.

In re Charleston. The Family Circle Cup is played on Daniel Island. This is actually a pretty good place to stay if you aren't staying ocean front on one of the islands. The hotel(s?) there are oriented towards business travelers and not beach vacationers so you can actually get pretty good rates on the weekends. Daniel Island itself has resort style layout so its a pretty pleasant home base.

Plantation = Farm with Slave Cabins. Worth taking a tour but dont expect anything but a historic tour. My family is from Charleston so the plantations and the slave market are pretty poignant for us. Of course they just call it "the market". It's a series of long brick structures in historic Charleston.

Well I'm clearly not the only DVC'r who can't read because there were definitely people flying kites on the DVC beach one day and I'm fairly certain they were guests. I honestly didn't see that sign, but I also have to watch my step really carefully because I broke my foot last year. But then again, my DH and his friend came down twice after golf and they didn't see it.

I wish Disney passed something out at registration. I certainly read through all of those sheets the first night.

Doubletrouble - those markets must have been where we were shopping in the stalls. I can't believe I missed that. My kids were so not into the history thing that they were making fun of me by pointing out the historical markers each time we passed one....but they must have missed that one. I'm going to research it now.

This is the one trip I didn't buy a guide book beforehand and I'm really regretting it now. I usually plan the whole trip out, but my eldest daughter had surgery two weeks before the trip and I had to tend to her for two weeks. Then I drove my sister and her baby back to NYC after Easter three days before our trip and while I was enroute my daughter had a car accident. So I was just happy to get on the plane safely with her in one piece.....

Well it's a good excuse to go back to Charleston.

We did have a good time at the farmer's market eating beignets and fresh squeezed lemonade. My DH had a grand time picking out veggies and potatoes to cook at HH. He loves cooking on vacation which is a treat for me.

Well my physician husband just confirmed that none of the ones my daughter collected had any cilia left on them. I hope folks can sleep better tonight knowing that we weren't purposely raping the environment as has been suggested.

Thanks for the thoughtful report. Glad you had a good trip.

Did your friend in the studio have any noise from the GV above? That is sometimes a complaint heard due to the hardwood floors and chairs being moved across the floor.

I'm glad you found some sand dollars - I have never seen any at HH except under water or broken pieces. If they were out of the water it's unlikely they were alive and were fair game for collection. You can also just bleach them out in the sun for a few days. Be careful using bleach as it tends to make them even more brittle. They are green and feel "furry" (the cilia) when alive, but begin to lighten quickly once they are unable to sustain their usual habitat. They do make a nice display! Enjoy!

Thanks also for the dining and golf reviews. We head down in 2 weeks and will see about trying the Redfish.

BTW- was the ocean warm enough for a swim?

I doubt you collected any live ones 30 feet in. Usually the ones laying in the water near the edge aren't alive either. The live ones I've seen are ones people walk out into the water to get. And the live ones are kind of purple green - pretty easy to spot as 'living'.

Thanks for the great trip report! We were there Easter Sunday until Tuesday and the weather was cool and crisp but not too windy. We've enjoyed Redfish in the past. This year we had a great meal at Sunset Grille and a pretty decent meal at the Italian place in Shelter Cove. We love Hilton Head!

Doc

I didn't realize where the GV was. The resort didn't seem that full - but maybe there was someone up there.

In all honesty, our friend who is a priest and my DH were so exhausted each night after golf and dinner that our friend usually turned in early (9pm). He never said a word about noise......so I'm assuming it wasn't that bad.

We had elephants living above us for a few days. There were only 3 of them - all adults, but sometimes it seemed like they were doing jumping jacks! We mostly laughed about how three skinny adults could make that much noise.

The water was still too cold to swim....and I didn't see anyone nearby in the water. We put our toes in once or twice and I think if we'd had a day in the 80's we might have taken a plunge - but 72/74 was probably the highest air temp that we got and most days there was a fairly brisk wind. The beach house pool was really cold and only one DD actually went in - once. I don't think it was heated like the main pool at the resort - at least this week.

Redfish was fabulous - decor, service, wine, food - just everything. My DH is a foodie/wine collector and he loved the wine "shop" that they have attached to the restaurant. There is an outdoor area at Redfish that would have been great if the temp had been right and there is a huge outdoor fireplace. (They actually have the standing heaters out there I guess if folks decided that they "had" to be outside).

Between the 6 of us we had salmon "naked", surf/turf, steak, muscles and I forget what else - but it was all delicious. I couldn't recommend it more.

We saw the Italian place near Shelter Cove and considered 5-6 other places that had been recommended on these boards - but my DH uses a different website for restaurant recommendations and they were right on about the AW Shucks in Charleston and all 3 places in HH. We usually eat out more often.

I thought for sure between my DH and his friend that one of them would pull a muscle or break something by weeks' end because they haven't played this much consecutive golf in a decade or more (and we're all 47-48). But they both said they felt great and their shoulders weren't sore, etc. Then on our last day my DH pulled a chair over on the pull deck and somehow managed to mangle his toe. He had to wear sandals home on the plane yesterday. It wasn't funny - but it was.

mmmcq -
we went to hilton head for the first time last fall and headed back north via charleston - touring charleston made me forget how much i loved savannah!

we are headed back this fall and one of the unfinished items on our schedule is another trip to charleston [mt pleasant, really - a real short ride outside of charleston] so that we can visit boone hall plantation...it was the inspiration for the setting of tara in gone with the wind; and scenes from the movie glory were actually filmed there.

i so loved charleston that i want to go back some time when the historical society or some ladies garden society runs a christmas tour of historical charleston homes!

we love hilton head resort and can't wait to go back!

Thanks again for the comments. We've been going to HH for almost 30 years now and never get tired of the area ... and always seem to find something new each trip!

We've been to HH at most times of the year, but this will be our first May trip. I know that in late March/early April the ocean is too chilly for my tastes, but by July the ocean temp will be in the mid 80's. In September it is still pretty warm and then cools again during October. Hopefully we can enjoy a dip in May - the air temps should be comfortable by then.

There are 5 GVs at the resort - building 28 has the one used as a model when the sales office was still open at the resort - and each one has a 1BR and a Studio (lockoff 2BR) underneath it. All of the other 1BRs and Studios (16 of each - all lock-offs) are found in the Live Oak Lodge. Building 28 is one of those with an "island" view - mostly of woods or other buildings - although you can see the harbor/marina from the front door (as you already know!).

Sorry about the toe! Ouch! :(

Ah Boone plantation was the place I wanted to go and will be the first place I check out next time. I also didn't get any takers on a day trip to Savannah. If the weather had been nicer, I would have given up a pool day (we only had two) and driven there myself. I run a Holiday house tour here in early December.....I'd love to see one in Savannah.

I am soooo done talking about sand dollars - but here's the website that my DH checked while we were there for drying tips.

http://www.hhidirect.com/sanddollars.html

My daughter's finds were skeletons with no cilia as pictured and up on the drier sand line - not in the water and not buried in wet sand. I suspect that the stormy weather (wind and white caps on the water) coupled with the fact that not many folks were out on the beach on Sunday might have made them easier to find on Monday at very, very low tide which is when we were there.

Doc, after we were settled and had ridden the bikes around a bit I thought perhaps I had made a mistake in at check-in swapping our other location for the 1st floor in villa 28 - but it really was better for my daughter and you couldn't beat the proximity to the pool. And we were really protected from the wind.

I bet there are folks swimming there this week with the temps in the 80's. I would definitely do HH again, but I would try later in the season if we were to go as a family. My DH would like to return to play golf - but the weather was not a problem for them - in fact it was pretty good with the mild temps.

I did find it hilarious our last night when the calypso music was blasting from the restaurant across the marina. It made you want to walk over there and catch the action.....but we had to pack. Next time.

And my DH adds by email (he's working tonight to pay for the trip we just took) that the site he uses to find restaurants is www.chowhound.com. He searched the 'South' forum for charleston + family and came up with A.W. Shucks. Redfish can also be booked on opentable.com. We went early - so we avoided the rush anyway.

Redfish is my favorite HH restaurant. Can't wait to go back.

Family Circle Cup is moving from Daniel Island next year, although the new location hadn't been announced. You didn't miss too much---most of the top players dropped out last minute due to injuries, but my son's tennis coach did run across Venus Williams at a Thai restaurant Friday night!

Food for thought re. the Marketplace: every single historical tour I've ever taken in Charleston has specifically said that slaves were never sold there.

Thanks for the trip report!

That is correct. It was the Slaves market - they brought goods to SELL there just like a farmer's market.
