we are driving to Disneyland from Missouri in July and I am REALLY wanting to go to vegas to spend the night on our way out there I have a 5 and 6 year old and it would probably be about 4 or 5 in the evening when we arrived what would be a good hotel for us and a few neat things to do...I wanted to spend no more than about $150 on a hotel for the night and any free or cheap things to do would be GREAT!! Thanks for the help

There's lots of discounts on rooms in Vegas. Check out Vegas.com or Expedia to see what available. If you stay on the strip (which I'd recommend--stay on strip, park car once, use the central location to walk to see the "sights")
The kids may enjoy seeing the volcano erupt @ the Mirage and seeing the fountains @ Bellagio but again Vegas.com can give you idea of the type of things that are available. BTW---Vegas is ungodly HOT in July. Keep that in mind when making your touring plan.

THANK YOU SOO MUCH!!! We won't get there until a little later in the day so hopefully that will help with the heat some and we will be leaving the next morning to head to Disneyland!! I mainly just want to go so I can say I have been :rotfl:

Vegas hotels can be kinda pricey on Friday and Saturday nights, but really cheap the other 5 nights of the week. The difference can be huge. What day of the week are you expecting to arrive? If it's a Sunday-Thursday, you may be able to get a really nice place for not too much. The Monte Carlo has a really nice pool for the kids, with a wave pool and lazy river. It looks like weekdays in July go for 59 to 69, whereas weekends are 129 to 189, depending on the day.

And July is hot enough to swim even after the sun goes down. I've been there in August where it doesn't go below 100 until after midnight :rotfl2:

The wife and I like to stay in downtown Vegas. It is a lot cheaper but you miss the glitz of the strip (but you can always drive up to the strip of course).

We use Vegas.com, i4vegas.com and just the actual hotel websites when we book.

July weather in Vegas will be hot as others have said so bring swimming outfits. The Golden Nugget in downtown has a slide that you go through with sharks (wife and I might stay here later this year just to do that)

Some things to do:
M & M & the Coke Store
See the Bellagio water show
Las Vegas Experience (this is downtown and happens once a hour every hour starting at like 8 or 9)
In & Out Burger (off the strip but close)
Gold & Silver Pawn Shop (if you watch Pawn Stars, this is their shop)

Send me a PM if you want or need more ideas.

Just an fyi Circus circus is on the far end of the strip, take advantage of using the free valet at the other hotels that you may want to check out as July is very hot and the strip is 4.5 miles long, plus the hotels are huge!

Also since you will be with kids and going out at night, beware of the card guys, they hand out cards to adults who pass by that have pornography on them and those are sometimes strewn about on the sidewalks.

Thank you SO much for that information!!! How do I find out about which places have free valet?

Honestly July is the HOTTEST time of the year with temps well over 115 on the strip until well into the early morning(i.e. after 2am). The sun doesn't go down until around 8/9pm during the summer here.

I would not recommend going to the Pawn Stars shop in July unless you want to wait in line in the heat for 5 hours to get into a small shop and not see the main stars as they aren't there unless there's filming happening.

My suggestion is to go to the Monte Carlo for the 6pm processional by Blue Man Group through the casino. It's free to watch and something your kids will love(unless they don't like loud noise of course)! I also recommend going to Adventuredome if you have the money, seeing the Bellagio fountains, the Mirage Volcano, and the animatronic show at the Forum Shops at Ceasar's Palace.

Valet is free at all hotels in Vegas but the recommended tip is $1 when you drop it off and $1 on pick up. Remember, these guys are running in the heat of the Vegas summer to get your car to you. Leave yourself PLENTY of time to get from place to place as the strip can be a parking lot sometimes and it can take an hour to go from Circus Circus to anywhere mid-strip even though it's only 4.5 miles long total(think LA freeways at rush hour). The crowds are very high on the weekends in the summer so I would suggest buying tickets for any shows you want to see and making reservations for dinner soon.

Here's a pretty detailed list of all the free things to do in Vegas:

BTW, those cards don't have ACTUAL pornography on them(that's illegal believe it or not) just girls in bikini's.

We were just in Vegas last week. The card guys didn't bug us at all, because we had our teenage son with us. They are pretty protective of the cards when they see minors. There also were not as many of them as there have been in the past.

In the past, it seemed like there were 8 or so lined up. Last week, they were working in groups of 2.

I told DS that he "saved me" from the smut slappers! (He is 17, and I am sure would not have minded a card or two. But he didn't get any!!)

thanks for the great info!!! Maybe when we will be coming in it will be about time for the blue man group and we can stop there first!! My kids make plenty of noise all the time so noise for sure doesn't bother them :rotfl: I am really looking forward to this but the heat is a little scary for me!! Hopefully we will get to see the few things on our list though!!

also what would be a good family place to eat dinner? that will be the only meal we have to worry about there
