i am rather young...only 25yrs old.. i have started looking at new recipes to try. i am getting tired of the same ole same ole....... alot of these recipes are calling for things i dont know how to buy... like cooking wine, dry wine, and olive oil. if any of you can help please do. and any other advice you may have is also welcome. thank you!!

I very very seldom use wine in any recipe......except chocolate sauce for home made ice cream.......and olive oil is just plain good.....I use Berolis olive oil.......not the most expensive and not the cheap stuff either......and I use very little of this too. Try some of the crock pot recipes that are being posted.....easy.....economical.....and when you come home at night....your meal is ready to chow down.....I hope you will find that cooking is really a very easy thing to do......it is something that we have to do every day....and we do get sick of the same old stuff......we have alot of game in my freezer and I have to try to use it without getting so tired of the same stuff and cooked the same way....

Don't know if you saw it, but I posted some thoughts where you first posted this. Hope you get more help!

i know how to cook. and i like to do it. i am a stay at home mom and have all the time in the world. the only thing is my knowledge is very limited. i used to work evenings and so i never had to cook. i can bake VERY well. i love to bake. my problem lies in my limited knowledge. my boyfriend and my son are not big on red meat. so we end up with ALOT of chicken. here in lies the problem. my son is 5 and will eat anything you put in front of him. i have started to buy cookbooks. but not big ones....just the ones you find in the check out isle of the grocery store. if you have suggestions of recipes or cookbooks or anything else for that matter i would be forever grateful. thank you for all of the advice.

Angela,

Glad you decided to visit the recipe board.

Ask away -there are many helpful, knowledgeable people here.

If you want websites let me know I've got a ton.

I think there is a chicken post here somewhere _ I'll go look and post if I find it.

I too posted to your thread on the CB.

My reply was going to be to buy the little cookbooks at the checkout. :)

Seriously, those are good recipes because they use just a few ingredients. You don't have to buy anything fancy, and the things that you just use a little bit of you can buy little by little so that you don't pay a ton of money one week for staples.

Another great place for recipes is on websites of food companies. Brands like Kraft and Campbell's have good, easy recipes.

My favorite cookbook for basic recipes is the More-with-Less Cookbook. It's a cookbook compiled by Mennonite women (I'm not Mennonite). The recipes are all very basic and use wholesome ingredients. They aren't all low fat, but they're healthy and cheap. They're also all easy to make, and many of them have lots of choices of ingredients so you can use whatever you have on hand.

Kermit - I didn't realize that More-With-Less had such a wide distribution! I live in what used to be a predominantly Mennonite area and have that cookbook, too! It may not be ALL low-fat, but by comparison to traditional PA Dutch cooking (which is what I was raised with) they sure SEEM that way!;)

Seriously, this cookbook does have a lot of good ideas in it!

thank you all so much for the advice. if you have any recipes or websites you would like to send me........the address is worm5996@yahoo.com

Piratesmate, I had to buy it from Books A Million online. They don't carry it in the stores. I read about on a website devoted to living frugally. I'm very impressed with it. When we started looking for a new church, I looked in the phone book to see if we have any Mennonite churches in the area, but we don't.

Another good place to start is with community cookbooks. The recipes there tend to be fairly easy and not too time consuming.

Joy of Cooking is a great book to have on hand. It's wonderful for explaining the basics and helping to understand terms and ingredients.
