Dining with DISers

And what does a good DISer do when their husband is locked out of the room? Take pictures, before he comes back in and messes things up! Of course!

Janet, I was relieved when I saw your answer to that question. I could only imagine how my DW would answer that! Glad you finally found that room in the far corners of the BC. Boy, they say there are long walks to the rooms in the YC...... Next time someone asks that question on the main thread I'll just copy in your description of how you found your room.

Glad to see all of that space in the nightstand.

Things like that are very important!

;)
Wow Janet got a king bed AND a phonebook!! Seriously Janet your holiday is now complete :lmao::rotfl2:
I am a little slow this evening. That is tons of space in the nightstand....even can stow some very important necessaries....
Never were truer words spoken (or well, written);)

I am totally stumped on the sparkly picture and where you went next:confused3

Your room does look gorgeous though and how brilliant is it that you have only arrived and met not 1 but 2 friends from here :thumbsup2 Laughed when I read your directions to your room and the fact that you did the decent thing and took photos while your husband was locked out :woohoo: OK I will just sit here and keep checking to see where you went next popcorn:::rolleyes1:hourglass

So that's where they are putting all those phone books from the CL floors!!!

:thumbsup2 We knew they had to exist somewhere.

Thanks for the hint! Got it!

:goodvibes

I thought you'd get that hint.

The friends just kept on coming. We didn't meet anyone else on our first day, but there are many more meet ups to come! :goodvibes

THE FOUNTAIN OF nATIONS AT ePCOT!

ps cAP LOCKS IS ON...

I can’t believe so many days have passed since my last post. I thought I’d whip my whole trip report off in just a week or so, but somehow I've managed to fill my days with dozens of things besides trip report writing.

When we last left off, we had toured our room and now it was time to head out to a park. On the way out, we stopped in the lobby to get my husband’s magic band fixed up. The interesting thing was that when the CM checked into our account he said neither of our bands had been set up, so it was odd that mine had worked at all. :confused3 Since we had used our time when they were cleaning our room to head down to the Marketplace to pick up some mugs, I was hopeful that the transaction on my magic band didn't go through, but no such luck – they got the charge for our mugs associated with our account, as it should be.

We had an emergency exit door located right beside our room door, so while we were talking to the CM we asked him if we could use the emergency exit as a regular way out of the hotel, being hopeful that it had the power to be a secret exit that would transport us close to the buses or something like that. The CM looked at the floor plan and said we shouldn’t use that exit because it would lead us out through a backstage cast area where a manager or security would question why we were there. This just made me more curious about what we would see at the end of the exit stairs. (We would find out soon enough!)

Once the band was fixed up we hopped on a bus and made our way over to the Magic Kingdom. While I love staying near Epcot, it is hard to imagine a trip to WDW without heading over to MK on our first day.

Here is our first glimpse at the castle for this trip.

We had plans for dinner, so we didn’t have much time to spare, and we headed straight over to the left side of the park. We had Fast Passes for Peter Pan and Haunted Mansion, but first we had to board the boat at It’s a Small World. While IASW is in no way our favourite ride, it is always our first ride. I think that tradition began back in 2004 when I insisted we would be riding IASW, and we did it first as the boys wanted to “get it over with.” So in the same spirit of let’s get it over with, we always ride IASW first.

024low.jpg

The photo hint from my last post was taken looking down into the waters of IASW. People throw a lot of coin into that water!
025low.jpg

Next up we used our Fast Pass for Peter Pan. I love this ride! I’ve only been on it a few times, but I really like it. It is a charming ride through the world of Peter Pan. The queue for this ride may be one of the worst at WDW (hot and just plain boring), so I highly recommend only riding Peter Pan if you have a Fast Pass or the stand by line is surprisingly short.

After PP, it was across the street to the place that is most special for our family.

051low.jpg

We all LOVE Haunted Mansion and ride it over and over on every trip. While we had a Fast Pass for later on, we bailed on that idea and just waited in the stand by line which worked better for our dinner reservations.

Here are a couple of shots taken while working our way through the HM queue.

Now it was time to leave the park and board a boat to dinner. We love the boat rides to the resorts at WDW and will look for any excuse to ride on one. Tonight’s excuse was a dinner at the Grand Floridian.

057low.jpg

Narcoossee’s to be precise.
058low.jpg

Dinner at Narcoossee’s was amazing! One of my favourite Disney dining experiences. We started with a shrimp cocktail and then I had scallops with pasta and Mr. JanetMom had the tuna with rice. Everything about the place makes for an amazing dinner – the service was perfect, the food incredible, the room is so nice and the view is outstanding.

After dinner we took a stroll around the resort and decided to return to the BC via Epcot, starting with the monorail from the GF. We were cutting it close as Epcot would soon be closed. We weren’t sure what we would do if Epcot was closed when we got there, but we knew we would figure it out. We did arrive after park closing, but they were still letting people in. There wasn’t anything open to stop at, so we just walked through Epcot, straight back to the BC.

Back at the hotel we were pleased to see our luggage had arrived so we did a quick unpack, went down to the Marketplace for a quick drink and then it was time for some sleep. (Briefly!)

This was the night of the annoying fire alarm, and at 12:30 am we awoke to an alarm telling us to get out. We didn’t panic as we live in a high-rise building so we are used to the occasional fire alarm. At home it would be unlikely that we would even leave our apartment, but in a strange hotel we felt it best to get up and get out. We weren’t in too big a hurry so we did take the time to get dressed and protect our fellow vacationers from seeing us in our pj finest. While we looked around the room to decide what to bring with us, we didn’t even think of what we had put in the safe, which was our passports. So we fled the building leaving behind our most important travel document.

Public Service Announcement #1 – If travelling internationally to WDW and there is a fire alarm, grab your passport on your way out of the room.

This was our chance to see where that emergency exit led. As promised, it took us out through a backstage area, and out to the front of the hotel. It wasn’t a quick exit though because someone who was trying to be nice and polite, decided to hold the stairwell door for everyone on the third floor to enter the stairwell before he and the others from the floors above were able to proceed. While this was polite, it was a very bad and possibly dangerous idea.

PSA #2 – When evacuating a multi-floor building, it is safest to alternate a couple of people from the stairwell to pass, and then a couple of people from the entering floor, then a couple of people from the stairwell etc. When someone holds the door for everyone from one of the floors to enter the stairwell, they cause a backlog for all the floors above. This can cause panic as the upper floors don’t feel they are able to vacate the building. If everyone alternates, everyone feels like they are moving towards the exit calmly.

Sadly the evacuation on the front of the building wasn’t as entertaining as it was on the back of the building. We didn’t run into any other DISers and we didn’t hear NinjaMom calling my name. We kept ourselves amused by walking around and seeing all the bleary eyed travelers, many who decided to just lay down on the sidewalk and catch a bit more sleep before we were able to head back in to the hotel. I did feel sorry for the parents of small children who looked exhausted as they carried their bundled up children out of the hotel.

Soon enough we were able to return to the building and were back in bed to get some sleep before we had to wake up in just a few short hours.

Well that’s enough for today… here’s a hint at what’s to come next.

Janet - it is the bottom of IASW. Couldn't figure it out!

And Peter Pan - I love this ride and use a FP+ for it on every visit! Silly I know but not is a favorite.

And dinner sounds yummy.

The fire drill- we were actually orderly on our side of the resort coming down the stairs. Think we followed the rules! Sorry your early morning out was not as social as ours. :)

If I'd have known everyone else was together, I'd have made a bigger attempt to get to the back of the hotel!

I'd never have guessed IASW but it all makes sense now you've told me ;)
I also insist on dragging my family on this ride for the sake of tradition :lmao:
Love PP and HM and your dining location looks fabulous!
Pity you didn't get to join the evacuation party at the other side of the hotel but glad all was well and no fire :thumbsup2

I can’t believe so many days have passed since my last post. I thought I’d whip my whole trip report off in just a week or so, but somehow I've managed to fill my days with dozens of things besides trip report writing.

Jeez, how does that happen? (says the Queen of stretching out a report)

Totally agree with both of these philosophies-

MK is always first for my family.

And Peter Pan is awesome, but the queue sucks! We only ride this first thing in the morning or with a Fast Pass.

Sounds like a fabulous dinner! I have never been to Narcoosses and in fact have never stepped foot in the GF.

You definitely would have been a welcome addition to our impromptu pajama party!

Our next day began bright and early with a 6:30 a.m. wake up.

But before we get to the details of the day, let’s talk about why this trip report is titled “Dining with DISers”. I mentioned at the beginning that this trip came about due to my husband’s suggestion we return to Disney, combined with Ninja Mom’s nagging. Before I booked I had to ensure my husband knew what he was walking in to, so I warned him that if we went during this week I would want to attend the DIS Meet scheduled for the Monday evening. He was okay with that, so once the finances were in place the trip was booked and the planning began in earnest (meaning the spreadsheet population began.)

Prior to booking, my husband and I had been rating and ranking restaurants, so the spreadsheet was quickly populated with our desired restaurants, ready for the 180-day mark. Ninja Mom was soon to reach out and suggest a breakfast meet in France, which worked perfectly with the spreadsheet, so a dining meet was established. Like many of you, I’ve been known to laugh out loud at Ninja Mom’s postings, so my husband knew of this ninja and was interested in joining our breakfast meet.

I should give some context for the next bit by noting that my husband and I are extremely introverted (and my husband more so than I.) While we are happy to live and vacation in the midst of others, we would be quite happy if we didn’t have to talk to many others. We like to observe without actually participating in discussions with strangers. Now that the trip was booked and everyone was talking about the DIS Meet, we realized Sue M wouldn’t be able to make the meet and so the talk began of getting together later in the week – possibly lunch on Friday. At this point I had to let my DIS friends know that we needed to slow things down. Even though I had only scheduled two interactions with my DIS friends we were nearing the tipping point, for us introverts, of too many DIS meets for our short 6-night stay. I thought if I booked too many DIS meets in one week I’d surely scare my husband off of Disney forever.

Over the next few days of planning I mentioned to my husband that there was potential for another meal with friends, and his response was to say “as long as we don’t have to change any of our plans, I’m willing to share any meal with your DIS friends.” Well okay then! :) With a statement like that, I now had permission to freely book as many dining meets as I could come up with. I immediately emailed our Friday lunch plans to Ninja Mom and Sue M and told them they should book a reservation at the same place and time and we could dine together. Since we’d never met before it was agreed that we could approach the restaurant at the same time and if we didn’t feel like eating together we would do a quick meet and greet and then dine separately. Of course I knew that if we dined separately Ninja Mom wouldn’t be able to resist making farm animal noises at us from across the restaurant, so I knew we’d play it safe and dine together.

As all of our planning continued, I heard natebenma and Ninja Mom discussing the idea of a Monday morning breakfast meeting. I interjected myself into their conversation and began pushing for a breakfast at the Captain’s Grill, partly because I heard they have a good breakfast, but mainly because the spreadsheet said we were having breakfast at Captain’s Grill on Monday and if the spreadsheet said it, I was allowed to schedule a meal with other DISers. And that long bit of background brings us to today’s breakfast….

I couldn’t wait to get to our 7:30 am meeting at the Captain’s Grill as I was very excited to be sharing breakfast with Ninja Mom and her family, and I was going to meet natebenma in person! They are exactly as you would imagine and our breakfast was full of chatter as if we had all been good friends for years. Ninja Mom’s family was all respectfully quiet so that she could regale us with stories. Natebenma is very nice and has her own share of hilarious stories about how she conducts herself in restaurants. I love her sense of humour! (I found myself giggling often when in natebenma’s presence.) And an added bonus to the breakfast was getting to meet HockeyMomR. She is great! It was a highlight of my trip to meet her and her mom and I know we would enjoy spending time together anytime! You can find natebenma’s take on the meal here.

Here is our group shot. (Photo credit goes to natebenma/Ninja Mom’s son, but I’m stealing the photo since I’m in it.)

And while I don’t usually do food porn, I’ll include photos of our meals here courtesy of natebenma. We enjoyed the lobster omelet and the poached egg with crab and rosti.

I had the same meal as Ninja Mom because I like to copy her.

After breakfast we headed out into the heat (or should I say HEAT!!!) towards the boat dock to DHS. We chose the boat as even at 9 am it seemed too hot for the walk.
071low.jpg

Waiting for the boat, looking back towards the Beach Club.

View towards the Boardwalk.
074low.jpg

Once inside Hollywood Studios we did a bit of shopping (I still love sending our purchases back to the resort so we don’t have to carry them around.)

Next up was our Toy Story Fast Pass. Here are our glamour shots.
086low.jpg

088low.jpg

Next we had to stop by the snowman which is a photo stop for us on every trip. We were missing our son this time. You can see more of my husband (in what has become his uniform for DHS) and our son in my last trip report (you will need to scroll down.) It was sad to not have our son with us at this moment. In comparing shots, I also see that they changed the tree in front of Pizza Planet.

090low.jpg

091low.jpg

After the snow man we thought it would be a good idea to sample cupcakes from Starring Rolls, which was a not so good idea, given the combo of the heat and the fact that this was where we headed next.

093low.jpg

As we entered the Tower of Terror we were given the red card which was a nice distraction from the anxiety that was building up as we neared the scary elevators. As my ride photo shows, I am not as calm as natebenma when I ride the TOT.

Well that’s enough for today… here’s a photo hint at what I’ll show you in my next update. Any guesses at what this is?

Oh my goodness I missed some yummy breakfast food that morning! Although, I was so happy to squeeze in a quick cup of coffee and meet you! Was a pleasure.

I simply love your TSM model shots. They are great. That was a hot hot hot day - happy to see the snowman was surviving and you got some nice photos!

Darn tooting I nagged you! If I had know Mr. JanetMom was just as much fun (ok, maybe a little more...) I would have been nagging him too!

Like many of you, I’ve been known to laugh out loud at Ninja Mom’s postings, so my husband knew of this ninja and was interested in joining our breakfast meet.

You mean to tell me you are bothering that poor man with my postings! :sad2:

I immediately emailed our Friday lunch plans to Ninja Mom and Sue M and told them they should book a reservation at the same place and time and we could dine together. Since we’d never met before it was agreed that we could approach the restaurant at the same time and if we didn’t feel like eating together we would do a quick meet and greet and then dine separately. Of course I knew that if we dined separately Ninja Mom wouldn’t be able to resist making farm animal noises at us from across the restaurant, so I knew we’d play it safe and dine together.

This is absolutely positively correct. There are still people who were traumatized by me when they were touring "Living with the Land" and I made it sound like the Buffalo were 'moo-ing' from my perch above in the Garden Grill restaurant. When you dine with Ninja Mom you soon realize "Moo happens".

They are never that quiet at home! Usually I get a lot of face palms and eye rolling....

And an added bonus to the breakfast was getting to meet HockeyMomR. She is great! It was a highlight of my trip to meet her and her mom and I know we would enjoy spending time together anytime!

Ahem! I know those two were a lot of fun but I was thinking I WAS YOUR FAVORITE!!! ;)

Well that’s enough for today… here’s a photo hint at what I’ll show you in my next update. Any guesses at what this is?

It looks like you had a lovely view of the roof and I'm going to guess that this was one of the roof vents, possibly from a restaurant kitchen.
I love the way you planned your breakfast. I don't think you are as introverted as you say you are. ;)

That breakfast looks like so much fun:goodvibes Love that you scheduled so many meets to coincide with your dining plans. Definitely made the safer choice by dining WITH Ninjamom-I have heard about her antics in restaurants:lmao: Mind you the world is a happier place because she shares them with us here on the DIS making us all laugh :thumbsup2
I'm sure there were many moments when you missed your son - I know we found it strange the first time we holidayed without our eldest and we still had the younger 2 to keep us company;)
I love the photo hints for what' coming next but I'm absolutely rubbish at them:p All I can think of is popcorn though that may be just because I'm starving right now :rotfl2:
Looking forward to the next chapter:goodvibes
