Debt Dumpers 2024

if the disabled child is getting SSI, then if they leave everything to him, he loses it. Cannot have more than 2k in assets. if he gets Medicaid, same
it should go in a SNT trust (if he's under 65) or an Able account if the state permits.

I have a disabled SIL, in a group home, my dh is guardian and I work with Medicaid.
Hi, if you can't answer the question I have I understand. Did your DH have to go through the legal process to be appointed a guardian? I've been dealing with how to go about getting a guardianship for my older mentally disabled sibling in another state, it's just so complex. Medicaid transfer from state to state from one facility, getting guardianship, and getting a facility close to me is like an obstacle.

You have been missed!!!!!
You are such a kind lady ,,sorry I never said that before.

Now 15% a year towards retirement is Awesome Hon!!

Welcome back.💐

Thank you for saying so that's so kind of you. I have not felt so kind with some boundaries I've had to put up, but that is the challenge I have.

Yes, I've been adding a percentage with pay increases and finally made it to my goal of 15% of my pre-tax pay going into my savings plan. Some say 25% is the goal, the Money Guys, but I haven't and probably can't get there as my life obligations i.e. kids college, other, etc. just no more is possible. I'm really at the peak of what I can push at retirement savings (also I'm not doing emergency savings since we bought our house, so that's not good and I need to revisit that).

yes, a judge has to ok guardianship. since my in-laws were already guardians he just had to be added. If you're just starting out, it's probably more difficult. is she under the other states DDD or similar?

does she have ssi or survivor's benefits? you can check with your states social services about Medicaid, transfers and facilities too

just going to comment on this-

different states have different laws on guardianship. in my state the guardian is required to be a resident within the state-my son cannot have so much as a standby guardian outside the state. we had to be investigated and fully vetted to be judicaly appointed his guardians-and we have to be reappointed every year. medicaid DOES differ state to state (in some states like california-county to county).

your best bet is to speak with an attoney who deals with guardianships and elder law (best for medicaid and social security b/c ssi and disabled adult child ssd-like my son falls into the very rare niche of qualifying for) in the state your sister resides in.

Not the Tuesday we wanted, but it turned out okay.

Took my car in to get the oil changed and tires rotated. Place calls me and tells me all 4 tires need to be replaced immediately. Ugh! So that's how my Tuesday morning started out. So I spent some of the afternoon researching tires and what would be the best to get for my car. Found some 16 inch tires I liked, but it turns out my car uses 17 inch tires. Found that out when I went to the tire place to do the deal. Glad I didn't pay for them online. Very blessed that the gentleman at the dealership price matched the tires to what I had found from his company online. But that's a $900 expense you can't plan/budget for. Isn't budgeting fun. Just when you think you've got it down to where everything might be working out, you get a wrench thrown into it with something you can't plan for.

Please say you didn't have to do some sort of horrendous interest rate loan to pay for them.

It is awful when bits like that happen but hopefully you haven't had to incur very expensive debt.

That sucks. Also a good reason to have an emergency fund.
Eventually, when you’re debt free it will be much easier to budget for things like this.
Tires, brakes and oil changes are expected expenses when you own a car. It’s normal that these items wear out. It’s just so frustrating when you have other goals that you’d rather focus on.

Had an exceptionally good date night to the casino the other night and came home with quite a bit more than we went in with.

We've had plans to do some work to the outside of our house once hubby's sister sells their dad's house, but now we can start this weekend. Heading to Lowes for dirt, mulch, flowers, etc. Probably Hobby Lobby for some little decor pieces. I want to get a quote on adding a little awning to our front porch. I finally got patio furniture and a rug for our deck so we can enjoy that now.

It does suck! I had to get new tires while paying off debt and thankfully we followed the baby steps and had an emergency fund of about $1000 for something like this. It did mean we had to replenish the emergency fund before we continued paying off debt.

It is true, once you are debt free, it is a little easier to deal with these inevitables. We have a car/house emergency fund since we know we will have to deal with things like tires, brakes, appliances etc.

Speaking of, we have to go get a new washer and dryer. Both are still working, but the dryer vent in the back has begun to break down (metal with holes) and so it is causing tears in our clothes. The washer works, but we have been fixing it part by part. Both are over 20 years old so they don't owe us anything at this point. We have our units picked out and just have to go to the store to look at them in person.

Damn girl you are so lucky at the casinos!

:goodvibes :shamrock:

On the few occasions we have gambled, we just lose, lose, lose. So quickly that it’s scary and makes it about as enjoyable as flushing cash down the toilet. I quickly gave up.

I definitely have had some serious losing streaks, but I only take what I can afford to lose and usually take $100 plus my freeplay. I get a decent amount of weekly freeplay money so it helps to "pad the bankroll" for date nights. But ever since I quit working I definitely have been on a hot streak.

Sorry you had a rough day. This is an excellent reason to have a small emergency fund even while you're trying to pay down debt.

Tires wear out between 40k-60k miles if you take good care of them, electric vehicles get slightly less due to the weight of the vehicle. Note how many miles you have now, and when you’ve added 30k more miles, start preparing to have to replace them soonish. Hopefully by that point you are in a better spot financially and can start sucking away money so that you don’t have to pull from your emergency fund when you get told you need new ones. I’m doing the same for myself because I know it is coming one of these days.

It happens. I know way to well. It seems every time we have splaying place something happens. Take a deep breath and keep working on your budget.

Just went to buy our new washer and dryer. We went in with an idea of what we want, but they weren't in stock. We said what we were looking for which is really no bells and whistles, just ones that wash and dry our clothes. We ended up with commercial washer and dryer. Can't wait for them to arrive!

I am grateful that we have a car/house account so we could buy them. Trust me, before 2017, we would have been financing those babies, but our debt free hard work has given us freedom. All this to say that the hard work you all are doing now will be so worth it!

i agree. our guardianship was easier because my MIL already went thru the process, SIL is deemed in need and my MIL added my DH. still had to go thru judge.

the basic federal rules re resources are the same for Medicaid. but some states automatically provide Medicaid to ssi recipients, others don't. workability, mltss may differ.

DAC rules are federal, but not everyone knows how they fall
