Crowds pouring into the theme parks

Huge crowds forced Walt Disney World to close the Magic Kingdom's 12,000-car parking lot for 2 1/2 hours Wednesday as tourists braved rainy weather and kept Orlando's spring break booming.

The brisk business further raised hopes that Central Florida tourism, hobbled by the weak economy and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, was getting back on its feet.

"What this translates to is we're hiring," Disney spokeswoman Marilyn Waters said. Disney World has current openings for about 700 nonseasonal workers, including housekeepers, cooks and store clerks.

"You're going to see more of our ads recruiting workers," she said.

Universal Orlando broke its single-day attendance record on Tuesday -- just three days after its Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure broke the previous single-day record.

Spokesman Jim Canfield would not give specific figures, but he said the previous record crowds occurred in December 2000.

SeaWorld Orlando hasn't set park records, but a spokesman said Easter weekend was one of its strongest ever and that it's seeing near record attendance this week.
