Yes, you can walk up and see if you can check in as a walk-up, looking for openings.

You should be able to check if the walk-up list is open in the app, and add your party if it is.

I joined the wait list on Saturday afternoon last weekend and waited 5 minutes. It was not busy at all!

Success has been hit or miss for me (and the misses are real disappointments) but it is definitely possible.
