This adventure began back in the summer of 2021, during the time international tourists were banned from entering USA. As I couldnt travel, I turned to YouTube and did my travel virtually, by finding various travel YouTube channels. One channel I found was Grounded Life Travel, Rob and Allie who travel all around America on Amtrak. One of their videos, the route from Seattle to LA really interested me and the more I researched , the more I realized that it would be an ideal add on to my June 2022 trip to California.

So after a few months of research and checking my budget, in November 2021 I booked a Superliner roomette sleeper on the Coast Starlight Train 11 from Seattle King Street Station to LA Union Station.

Booking 7 months before departure meant that I got a good deal, as like airlines, Amtrak prices increase as you get nearer departure date.
I paid $517 for a 2 person roomette, which included all meals.

Like airlines, Amtrak have a loyalty program, where you earn points for every train journey. Another tip from Rob and Allie is to create a profile and make sure to save the points, so thats what I did.

Amtrak have so much information on their website, from the types of sleeper rooms, to menus and route information. Before my trip I printed off the route map, the menu and my e ticket and added them to my travel documents.

Again Rob and Allie's video were so helpful when planning my trip. They had a video about the roomette, a video about the Coast Starlight route and a packing video.

So lets fast forward to the actual train journey.

Boarding at Seattle

Boarding started about 45 minutes before the train left. Sleeper rooms boarded first, then business class, then coach.

The Amtrak agent checked my ticket and then I was walking through the door, onto the platform. The sleeper carriages were at the top of the train, so I kept walking. About halfway up the platform, the conductor had a handheld machine and scanned my ticket and directed me to carriage 1130.

daisy room attendant.jpg

I was greeted by Daisy, my room attendant and she directed me up the stairs and to my room, which was number 3.

upper level entrance corridor.jpg

This was what my room looked like during the day. When I arrived I had 2 bottles of water.

The roomette is for 2 people. There was a menu and a safety card at the drop down tray table. On the walls were US plugs, and light switches. There was a bin, a box of tissues, a very narrow closet, 2 towels and two clothes hangers in the closet, and a coat hook.

It reminded me like a business class pod on a plane, compact but roomy at the same time.

The door had a lock on the inside and the curtains had Velcro to keep them closed. Another tip from Rob and Alli / Grounded Life Travel is to keep the door and curtains closed at all times, that way no one knows if you are in or out.

Rob and Alli / Grounded Life Travel also recommended splitting your carry on into two bags, one with important things to keep with you when you walk around the train and one with less important things to leave in the room. The door only locks on the inside, not on the outside so even though Amtrak is relatively safe, you just don't know who could go into your room when you are not there.

roomette day view.jpg

Out in the upper level corridor there was a complimentary coffee and water station and a restroom. On the lower level, which I forgot to take photos of, there were more restrooms , a shower room and a luggage store rack.

coffee station.jpg

Once I got settled in my room I went to explore.

On Amtrak you can only go between the different carriages on the upper level. The carriage I was in, was next to the dining carriage. This is where all the meals are served for the sleeper and business class passengers.

The meals are included in the price of the sleeper rooms but business class have to pay for each meal.
The prices for business class meals are
Breakfast - $20
Lunch -$25
Dinner- $45

Sleeper passengers get priority for reservations in the restaurant and if there are any times left, business class can book the reservations. Reservations are only bookable once on the train, not in advance.

There is a serving team in the restaurant. On my train the head server was Nicole and she had 2 assistants. The kitchen is located in the lower level of the restaurant carriage and there are 2 chefs who cook all the meals during the journey.

Coach passengers can not eat in the restaurant.

Next to the restaurant carriage was the business class carriage. This carriage is basically like a normal coach carriage, expect they have bigger, nicer seats, get complimentary water and can eat in the restaurant if there are available reservations. The seats recline and have a foot rest.

Next to the business class carriage was the viewing carriage. This was open seating, anyone could sit here. During the journey the conductor announced that the train was fully booked with 300 passengers. He asked that people be considerate of their fellow passengers and not camp out in this carriage.

On the lower level of the viewing carriage was the snack cafe. This was open during the day for anyone to buy snacks and drinks.

After the viewing carriage there were about 3 coach carriages. At the very end of the train, in the last coach carriage there was a window where you could see out the back of the train. I meant to take some photos but I forgot.

At about 7pm on the first day, Daisy changed my room into the night version. The two seats slide forward and then she put an mattress with sheets and blanket. If there was a second person in my room, the other bed was a top bunk bed which came down from the ceiling.

It was very comfy and I actually did get a good nights sleep, even though the moving train and sounds were a bit strange.

Tuesday June 21 Stations and Places

And then we were off, I suddenly felt the train moving, bye bye Seattle

Seattle.jpg

Tacoma, WA (TAC)10.33am
Olympia-Lacey, WA (OLW)11.17am
Centralia, WA (CTL)11.40am
Kelso-Longview, WA (KEL)12.24pm
Vancouver, WA (VAN)1.07pm
Portland, OR (PDX)1.50pm
Salem, OR (SLM)3.34pm
Albany, OR (ALY)4.11pm
Eugene, OR (EUG)5.08pm
Chemult, OR (CMO)8.13pm
Klamath Falls, OR (KFS)9.58pm

We kept pretty much on schedule, maybe 5 or 10 minutes difference but nothing major.

Soon after leaving Tacoma, Daisy came around the rooms and introduced herself and explained how meals would work. For each meal time either she or Nicole, the Head server would come around and take reservations. I asked her about having room service and she marked me down for all meals, which I was happy with.

The scenery quickly changed from urban to forests as we travelled through Washington State

1. Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge.jpg

Just after we left Olympia Lacey, at about 11.25am Daisy came by to get my lunch order. I had printed off the menu from Amtraks website and there was also a menu in the roomette. I used the menu in the roomette and ordered The Monte Cristo but Im not sure if was or just a normal toasted sandwich.

According the menu it was supposed to be Honey cured ham, turkey breast, Swiss and Cheddar cheese, thick cut brioche, chips.
I also ordered the chocolate cake and a coke.

sandwich lunch.jpg

Daisy brought my lunch just after 12pm, as lunch service started at 12pm.

The cake that arrived was different to what was on the room menu and the menu from Amtrak website. It didnt matter though it was really good. The sandwich was fine, theres not much you can do with a toasted cheese sandwich :)

It was really nice to eat my lunch and watch the scenery go by. By this stage I was getting used to the sounds of the train.

By 1.30pm we were approaching Portland Oregon, State number 2 on this journey and I managed to get some great photos crossing Williamette River on the way into Portland Train Station.

2. Williamette River Portland.jpg
Portland was one of the rest stops so I got out and walked along the platform for a few minutes. Many people went into the train station shop. Before arriving into Portland, the conductor announced how long we would have and not to go too far as the train would not wait for anyone.

Back on the train and on the move again, we headed through Oregon, and the scenery changed again to flat agricultural land. This photo is somewhere between Salem and Junction City.

3. between salem and junction city.jpg

Around 5pm, just before arriving in Eugene Oregon, Daisy came by to take my dinner order. Dinner service started at 5pm.

I ordered
Savory Mexican Souffle with Chilli, black beans, corn and roasted Poblano sauce
Seared flat iron steak , mashed potatoes, baby greens and port wine sauce
Carrot cake
Dinner also come with an adult beverage, so I ordered the Rose wine.

Eugene Oregon was another rest stop, so I again got out and walked up and down the platform.

Once we were on the move again, Daisy came by with my food.

steak dinner.jpg

After lunch I took a walk around the train. I went right to the end of the train, all the way to the end of the last coach carriage and back into the viewing car. I sat for a while and chatted to 2 elderly ladies who were in business class.

Again another scenery change after Eugene on the way to the next stop, Chemult Oregon. We were now in Williamette National Forest with mountains and lakes.

9. odell late williamette national forest.jpg

Daisy came by around 8pm to change my room from day to night and make up my bed.

I spent the last few hours of daylight relaxing, and watching the sun set over the mountains between Chemult and Klamath Falls Oregon.

As the light faded, I closed the curtains and prepared for bed. I decided not to have a shower but I used the Amtrak towels to have a body wash in the restroom. I put my phone to charge, changed into a tshirt and leggings, locked the door and turned on the night light.

Wednesday June 22 Stations and Places

I woke up about 6am, my usual wake up time, a bit disorientated. I slept fine, but it my brain kept thinking I was in a plane with turbulence, due to the movement of the train during the night. 8-)

Van Nuys, CA (VNC)8.36pm
Burbank, CA (BUR)8.44pm

As I went out to the restroom I heard Daisy talking to other passengers. According to the schedule we were about an hour behind. Breakfast started at 7am, so the Sacramento passengers got lucky and were able to have breakfast in the dining carriage. They were given first priority for reservations.

I gave my breakfast order to Daisy and got myself ready for the day. Just before arriving into Sacramento she brought my food but I decided to wait until the train started moving again to eat, as this was the first rest break of the.

So at about 7.20 am I went for a morning walk at Sacramento train station.

1. Sacremento.jpg

By 7.30am we were on the move again and it was time to eat breakfast. I ordered the French toast with sausages, orange juice and coffee.

2. breakfast.jpg

As we travelled through North California, it was amazing to see the difference in scenery compared to the previous day. This is somewhere between Sacremento and Davis.

3. Between Sacremento and Davis.jpg

Then it was into the Bay Area , approaching Martinez, California

4. Bay Area Approchaing Martinez CA.jpg

We were still about 70 minutes behind schedule. We should have arrived in Martinez at 7.54am but we actually arrived at 9.10am.

At about 10am I decided to take a walk down the train and sat for a while in the viewing car. The conductor announced we were approaching Oakland and it would be a rest stop, so I decided to get out onto the platform from viewing carriage and walk back up the platform to my carriage.

As we approached Oakland Station, I noticed some Police, but not being familiar with train travel in America, it didnt bother me. The Police could be at the station for any reason.

However, as the train stopped and I started walking up the platform, I saw that they were at the train and escorting a woman off the train. She was being loud and not co operating so I kept walking and got back on the train as soon as I could.

Well that was interesting, I found out later that the conductor had called the Police, as she was being verbally abusive to the train staff. I really don't understand why people are like that.

After the excitement of Oakland, it was back to the peace and quiet of my room.

I kept my room in the bed configuration and it was so nice to spend the day on the bed, just listening to the sounds of the train and watching the scenery go by. I thought I would miss being online or tv or music but I didnt. I had things downloaded from Disney+ on my phone, but I didnt feel the need to have any entertainment. It was really nice to just disconnect from reality for a while, especially after all the stress of arriving int America and the cancelled flights.

After Oakland we passed by the San Francisco Bay Salt Ponds on the way to San Jose.

5. San Francisco Bay Salt Ponds between Oakland and San Jose.jpg

Just before Salinas around 1pm, Daisy came by and took my lunch order.

For my second lunch I ordered chicken salad with goats cheese and honey glazed walnuts, blueberry and white chocolate cheesecake and a coke.

6. lunch.jpg

In the afternoon the scenery changed again to the mountains of Big Sur State Park between Salinas and Pasa Robles. All I could think about was the history of the area, and the thousands of men whose hard work in the burning sun made this route possible.

7. through the mountains of big sur state park between Salinas and Paso Robles,.jpg

I took a nap in the afternoon and woke up when the conductor announced the next rest stop at San Luis Obispo. By this stage we were nearly 90 minutes behind schedule. We should have arrived at 3. 24pm, but it was almost 5pm.

8. slo.jpg

I got out and had a walk around to walk myself up we. Daisy chatted to a few of us passengers and we asked her what happens if a passenger gets off for a rest stop but stays too long and the train leaves without them. She laughed and said it happens a lot more than you might thing. She said that people have to find some way of catching up with the train at the next stop and that Amtrak don't compensate or refund the extra cost.

As soon as we got moving again after San Luis Obispo it was time for my final meal. I ordered
Baked Brie and Raspberry Empanada
Roast Chicken with Mushroom Risotto , Baby Green Beans and Mushroom Sauce
Chocolate Mousse Cake

9. dinner.jpg

After San Luis Obispo we were in Santa Barbara County and travelling along The Pacific Coast Highway.

I have so many memories of this area and it was really cool to see the area from a train. Parts of the journey were through the mountains, parts of the journey along Highway 101 and parts of the journey along the coast.

As we were still behind schedule, the conductor did his best to make up time. We stopped in stations just long enough for people to get off the train. Also the conductor made announcements for people getting on connecting trains in LA Union Station. Amtrak really did great customer service , and announced that even though we would still be behind schedule arriving in LA, anyone with a connecting train would be ok. Amtrak was holding the trains for them in LA and if anyone had checked bags, they would transferred to the next train.

As the light faded, I spent the last few hours enjoying the sunset on the Pacific ocean.

10. sunset pch.jpg

Daisy came by about 7pm to change the room back into the day set up in preparation for arriving into LA.

Once the room had been changed, I gathered my things and got ready to get off the train and say goodbye to Daisy.

Arrival to LA and Final Thoughts

We arrived into LA just after 10pm. The last few stops, Simi Valley, Van Nuys and Burbank, only one or two people got off. It takes about 30 minutes from Burbank Airport to LA Union Station, so you really need to get yourself together the last 40 minutes or so. I could really feel the atmosphere change from relaxed to hustle we need to get things done.

As soon as I booked the train back in November, I started following Amtrak on Social media. They are very active and give great updates about all the routes, if there are delays or any important info passengers need to know. As a result, I was aware that we could be delayed arriving to LA. We were about 40 minutes late in the end, but its still a delay. I wouldnt advise having any plans made the night of arrival at your final destination. Some trains get delayed by hours. Amtrak shares the tracks on different routes with other train companies. In various places the freight and cargo trains get priority on lines, so Amtrak trains get held on side lines so the freight and cargo trains can go past.

I have been to LA Union station many times, I am familiar with the layout, but still I was a little disorientated getting off the train. I followed the signs to the Amtrak bag reclaim. This is a small area to the left side of Starbucks in the West Concourse of Union Station.

There were about 15 people there but it was a very small stuffy area with a tiny bag carrousel. There were signs that bags could take up to 30 minutes and that was about right.

Once the bags came though and everyone picked their bag, there was an Amtrak agent at the entrance, checking that the bag reclaim tag we had on our tickets matched the bags we took off the carousel.

Once I had my bag, it was about 10.30pm and I went outside to get a taxi. Normally I don't use metered taxis due to traffic as even a short journey can get expensive. But the hotel I had booked was only about 2 miles away and at 10.30pm, traffic is not an issue. The taxi fare cost me $7 :)

Extra Info
Booking Amtrak

Amtrak like airlines uses dynamic booking, meaning the fares increase in price the nearer to journey date you book. I booked 7 months in advance and paid just over $500 for the roomette. The fares start around $400 I think. On the train I met two ladies who were booked business class. They had wanted a roomette but when they checked prices it had gone up to $1100. I booked direct through Amtrak website and had no issues paying with my Irish credit card.

Luggage - On this route, a checked bag service was available. This was really useful for me, as being an international traveler I had a 50 pound roller as well as carry on bags. I checked my bag at Seattle and didnt have to worry about it. Other than checking a bag, luggage storage is very limited. The carriages are 2 level with most of the seats and rooms on the upper level. The stairs are very narrow and a bit steep, so it would be very difficult to manhandle my 50 pound roller up and down. There is a luggage store rack in each carriage , in the sleeper carriages this is on the lower level, so its up to you if you want to leave your bag unattended. There is very little space in the rooms for luggage, I had my airplane small roller and thats about all there is room for.
Also remember that for checked bags, you need to arrive about an hour before your train departs, so that Amtrak have time to load the bags onto the train.
Like with airlines, you will be given a bag reclaim ticket and Amtrak will check this when you collect your bag, so dont loose it.
And again, if you check a bag, you need to allow time at your destination for the bags to be unloaded.

bag car.jpg

Another thing to remember about your carry on bags. If you have a sleeper room, they only lock on the inside. So when you leave your room, anyone passing by can go in. Amtrak is relatively safe, and only sleeper passengers have access to sleeper carriages, but at the same time, you are travelling with strangers. You just dont know, staff or passengers could have sticky fingers. Make sure to keep all your important things in one bag which you can easily pick up whenever you decide to go for a walk. Also put your train ticket into this bag, as when you get off the train at a rest stop, the train station staff could ask to check your ticket before getting back on the train. I heard some passengers talking about this. They got off and went into the station shop but were asked for their tickets before getting back onto the train.

Tipping
Yes this America , so tipping is the done thing for train staff. I did my research on this and basically any train staff that you interact with, you should tip. How much you tip depends on the service they provide.
  • Amtrak Red Cap Assistance - if you need help with bags or need assistance getting from the train and platform to the station concourse - like a Bell Hop at hotels approx $2 or $3 per bag / person
  • Room / Carriage Attendant - the main person you will interact with on your journey approx $10 per person per night
  • Restaurant Staff- Approx $3 per person per meal
I had already planned that I would be ordering room service and I knew I wouldnt need assistance at the stations, so I had budgeted that my room attendant would get all the tips.

I gave Daisy $20 when she brought my dinner on the first night and I also gave her $20 when she brought my dinner on the second night. The room attendants are on call for the entire 30 plus hours of the journey. They have a staff rest area but they dont get proper sleep breaks like the airline flight crews. They have a lot of duties, not just changing the rooms from day to night and night to day, but they also do room service for drinks and meals, keep the restrooms clean, look after the complimentary coffee and water station and empty the trash bins throughout their carriage. At every station, they open the door to their carriage for passengers to get and off. Depending on how busy the train is, they will also help their colleagues in other sleeper carriages and the restaurant dining carriage.

On the second night I also gave Daisy $10 for the 2 chefs. Being a former chef, I know that chefs are the forgotten ones in the service industry. The food does not magically appear when the restaurant staff press a button, real people work very hard in cramped conditions to make the food. Daisy was surprised but very grateful on behalf of the chefs, as she knows how hard they work. She told me that she gives them money from her tips, but people dont realize that and it reduces the money she actually makes. I gave her a little note for the chefs, just to say thanks for the great food.

Food
On this route, lunch and dinner on the first day and breakfast, lunch and dinner on the second day were included. Alcohol is also available, you get one adult beverage included but if you want more you can buy it. You can ask your room attendant for room service drinks or you can buy alcohol in the snack cafe.

You can bring your own snacks onto the train, which you can eat in your room or in the viewing carriage.

Wifi
On this route there was no Wifi, but on other Amtrak trains / routes there is. If you book Amtrak, just check about the availability of Wifi.

General Safety
While Amtrak is a relatively safe way to travel, like everything be aware of your personal safety. When I was in my room, I kept the door locked. There were a few funny incidents with other passengers trying to open my door. One time two ladies were coming through the corridor. One lady was insisting they were in the right carriage, her friend was telling her no, we need to go one more. They tried my door and it was locked, but I moved the curtain and waved and they fell about laughing and the friend said, see I told you were in the wrong carriage. Another time a child went to the restroom nearby and got confused and tried to open my door.
Both of these are harmless and funny but at the same time, it just shows that you are travelling with strangers and you still need to be aware of others behavior.
The same when chatting to fellow passengers. Its human nature to share info about yourself but you dont know who you are talking to or what they could do with the info you tell them. Be mindful of what you tell people and that others can hear your conversation.

Also be aware that you are on a moving train during the night and while rare incidents do happen to trains. You are in a private locked room , but its not a hotel room, so be a bit conscious of what you wear or dont wear for sleeping. The restrooms are shared, so you could meet fellow passengers or train staff if you leave your room in the middle of the night. Also if there is an issue, you could have to leave the train in the middle of the night, so again keep your important things handy in case you have to leave in a hurry.

YouTube
YouTube is an amazing resource for Amtrak train journeys. Some people have entire channels just for Amtrak, some people just have a few videos about specific routes.
There is so much info and videos on YouTube, from the different routes, to the different types of rooms, to hints and tips. Theres room tour videos, food review videos and station tour videos.

While I had an amazing experience in a sleeper room, I know that not everyone can afford that. From my walk around the train, the coach seats looked great for people on a budget, you still get to experience the same scenery and you have access to the viewing carriage and you can bring your own food or buy from the snack car. I'm used to 10 hour transatlantic flights in economy seats , so the Amtrak coach seats would be a similar experience.

Im sure I have forgotten some things but if anyone has any questions, I hopefully will be able to answer. :)

Updated, I have now added Day 1 of the journey, Seattle Washington to Kalmath Falls Oregon to post number 3 :)

Updated, I have now added day 2, Sacramento to La Union Station to post number 4

You are making me want to take Amtrak to LA! It sounds so peaceful. I live in Sacramento and have only ever taken the line to the Oakland, which was fun. It sounds wonderful to disconnect and just enjoy the scenery.

The sleeper rooms are such a big difference from coach. I walked the train a few times, and couldnt imagine doing the journey in coach. You have it on your doorstep, I had to travel halfway around the world, do it :)

Updated , my Amtrak trip report is now complete. I have added my final thoughts to post number 5 :)

This was really fascinating. Thanks for sharing in so much detail. I have never really considered taking a train anywhere but it seems like it would be a fun experience.

Loved this report! Long time amtrak rider!
