Indoor NFL Stadiums

I live 5 miles east of the Bills stadium. This is the view out my patio since 10:30 this morning.

There’s a fence, a pool & my neighbors house back there. I guess running plays would be ok. But forget passing or kicking. :rotfl2:

Last word was Steelers didn’t even come in yesterday, supposedly trying to come in at 3 this afternoon. My brother lives near the airport, about 10 miles north of here. He doesn’t have much snow at all. The airport is closed, wind gusts are 55 - 60 mph.
That is what makes the game interesting.

I'm already on the hook for a new Bills stadium subsidized with my taxes -- although one benefit of a domed stadium could be more revenue by having more non NFL events there. Not that I would see any personal benefit from it. I think that being open air is part of the charm of Bills games. There was a photo of my father in law in the paper a few years ago of him sitting next to a snowman he built in his seat during a game.

Today is a little different because we are getting a whole lot in a short amount of time. I live about 30 minutes northeast of the stadium. I can't see how they could have the field cleared enough to even run around.

It's a little calmer now because I can see across the street at the moment.

I think around here (in Michigan) it's about being getting there; not just playing outside or watching the game outside. We had many games postponed Friday night. Sure they were basketball and held indoors anyway but the concern was getting to them and back home safely. Luckily for Detroit and the Lions.....they didn't get much of the nasty weather from the storm system for tonight's game. :)
Oh to be at
Ford
Field
Tonight.

Only if you don’t want to see players at their best or teams use all their varied plays. It’s not all that interesting if all you can do is run & maybe fumble.
Or if you want to see the players at all!! I remember a couple decades ago when NFL forced the Eagles at Bears game to be played in that thick fog. It was bad enough the players couldn't see more than 25 yards - fans saw almost nothing. Wow, what an interesting game.......

Those snow games are the most interesting NFL games. I think teams should be required to play no matter the weather conditions, and if fans can't get there due to a driving ban, no big deal. All the revenue comes from the TV coverage and that won't be impacted.

How do they get there if the roads are impassible?

I also remember a college game that was delayed due to lightning. I mean - what would be your limit? Tornados? Hurricanes? There are potentially deadly weather conditions where they could be ordered to shut down.

Not having a dome and not being located somewhere warm might be allowed by the NFL but it is not allowed for the Super Bowl.

True for the most part. They did experiment, and got lucky, with Giants Stadium in New Jersey about 10 years ago.

The only major sport that holds a championship game for the sponsors and TV instead of potential home fans. Such a shame...... Then again, there could be another situation like today if the game were in Buffalo, or Green Bay, or New England..... Can't mess up the super suite experience for the CEOs of the big-money sponsors.....

LOL. Sounds good to me.

Full disclosure, I have never lived in snow country. Wish I could merge the Facebook threads with this one. Some snow country folks raise the point that it will be days before things will be close to recovered, and that moving the game one day really won't make much difference.

I remember, decades ago, a baseball game being “rained out” at the Houston Astrodome because of severe weather in the area. Roads near the stadium were flooded and players, officials, stadium workers, fans, etc. couldn’t get to the venue.

It depends where those “snow country” people live. Some areas recover quicker than others. If the snow stops tonight, the roads around the stadium will be fine. Private parking lots in the area will probably be plowed too. The suburbs here do a great job with plowing. The issues in Buffalo are in the city, narrow old streets with no off street parking make clearing the city out challenging when there are big storms. The Bills stadium is in a suburb south of the city. The roads around it are county & state rods with crews that are very experienced at these types of storms.

Like I said, I’m 5 miles away, about. 12 minute car ride. We had bare pavement at this time yesterday. My husband cleared about 8 inches last evening. He went out about 45 minutes ago, measured 21” in front of our garage door. So we’re at close to 30” in less than 24 hours. And it’s still snowing.

Yup. Just like the pandemic, essential workers. I still have my special covid id badge and letter saying I was an essential worker and to allow me to proceed. I guess with covid they were really concerned it may get to the point where police would stop people who were out and about. Turned out not to be an issue as I ended up working from home for 15 months, only coming back into the building for three weeks around the November General Election as our boss was convinced that no matter who won the election, there would be riots. There were none.
Essential or not, you aint a goin nowhere in white out conditions. People get lost and freeze to death 15 yards from their house in a total white out. There is nothing to enable a person to orient themselves when it occurs. When conditions are right for them, they don't always happen, but when they do they can occur suddenly and without any warning. And if that were to happen with all the snow down and everyone on the snow covered roads it would be an instant threat to lives. And anyone that would declare a football game essential, is incompetent.

We all knew you'd never been in snow country. It was patently obvious. And what's worse is Buffalo is a special case even for snow country. And yet you feel completely free to opine on the subject like you're some expert.
Remember the red flags dating list thread? That's a red flag.

They think a window is open for tomorrow. If it comes to pass they'll probably play. If not, then We'll just have to wait and see.

Cold weather cities required to build domed or retractable roof stadiums? No.

But the NFL might “motivate” teams to do so by having ALL playoff games without such facilities in warmer locales.

That’s not gonna happen anytime soon. That’s a decision owners would vote on. And there are plenty of owners in cold weather cities without domes that wouldn’t vote for that. Plus the NFL just signed off on Buffalo building a new, open, no dome stadium that just broke ground in June. If they had any issues with not having domes, they wouldn’t have agreed to that.

Well the NFL has declared they won't have the Superbowl in such stadiums. Who knows whether they'll keep to that. And usually when someone builds a new stadium, the NFL helps offset the cost a bit by letting them host the Superbowl fairly quickly. Las Vegas is hosting this year.
