With today's postponement in Buffalo and last night's scene in Kansas City should "cold weather" NFL Teams be "required" to build indoor Stadiums along the lines of what the Vikings did?

Required by who?
Government? Absolutely not.
NFL? They can, but don't know if they should. What would be the dividing line on if a team is required to have an indoor stadium?
Teams? They can have one, they should need to pay for it.
Fans? If they don't want to go out in the elements, sit at home and watch on TV.

A dome stadium isn’t going to do anything if there’s a couple of feet of snow and a driving ban. That’s the scenario in Buffalo now. The Governor issued a driving ban.

You can argue that Miami would have an advantage over a cold weather team if they had to play in the heat and humidity of S Florida.

Somebody explained it to me :
Its the only way the locals can afford a ticket to their Stadium !
The cold didn’t keep them away !

Those snow games are the most interesting NFL games. I think teams should be required to play no matter the weather conditions, and if fans can't get there due to a driving ban, no big deal. All the revenue comes from the TV coverage and that won't be impacted.

Hell no. We are in the same county as Arrowhead and still working through a crooked and exploitative reappraisal process. Foreclosures will really be on the rise next year here. The very LAST thing I would vote for is more taxes to replace a perfectly good stadium.

If there's a driving ban, how do the teams, officials, stadium personnel, and broadcast personnel get there? Exceptions to the ban?

But with a driving ban, how would the players and officials get there???! Today's postponement was a surprising no-brainer. We know TV drives all the major sports schedules now, but even they had to give in to the weather conditions in Buffalo - even if they wouldn't give in to potentially dangerous conditions in KC last night.

I live 5 miles east of the Bills stadium. This is the view out my patio since 10:30 this morning.

There’s a fence, a pool & my neighbors house back there. I guess running plays would be ok. But forget passing or kicking. :rotfl2:

Last word was Steelers didn’t even come in yesterday, supposedly trying to come in at 3 this afternoon. My brother lives near the airport, about 10 miles north of here. He doesn’t have much snow at all. The airport is closed, wind gusts are 55 - 60 mph.

Yup. Just like the pandemic, essential workers. I still have my special covid id badge and letter saying I was an essential worker and to allow me to proceed. I guess with covid they were really concerned it may get to the point where police would stop people who were out and about. Turned out not to be an issue as I ended up working from home for 15 months, only coming back into the building for three weeks around the November General Election as our boss was convinced that no matter who won the election, there would be riots. There were none.

OP - they're not going to require domed stadiums anytime soon. And why just cold weather cities? Phoenix and LA and Vegas can get very hot spells in September.....

I'm more inclined to think ML Baseball will start requesting/requiring the retractable roof on their stadiums, now that they literally go from late March to early Nov, and they don't play games in inclement weather. If the MLB stadiums all have a roof, maybe they can go year-round for the TV revenues!!

Not seeing professional football players as essential personnel..... And when they get stuck, they'd put the actual essential personnel in danger trying to rescue.

Part of the fun sometimes is the weather - should be owner choice

Nope. NFL players & officials are NOT essential by any stretch of the imagination. We had a 3 day blizzard over Christmas 2022. There were driving bans in all the local counties, starting the 23rd. The Bills were out of town & flew into Rochester, about 90 minutes away. They were bussed back to the stadium, at some points with police escorts, so they could drive their big butt SUVs & be home for Christmas. Meanwhile, 47 people died out in the elements & stuck in their cars. Most other people were without family for Christmas, some without heat & electricity. Believe me, there were a lot of complaints that the Bills were allowed to ignore the driving bans. Because they’re high paid athletes working for billionaires doesn’t make them essential. Now if they want to sign up as a volunteer fireman & help put out fires in their towns, then they’ll be essential.

Exactly! I’m not a big fan, so I don’t remember the exact date. But when the bills played the dolphins early last season, it was about 90° plus the tropical humidity. The opponent side is in the sun the whole game, dolphins in shade. The dolphins bench has misters, the visitors side does not. Several Bills players became dangerously dehydrated & I think some needed IV hydration during the game. Apparently there is no requirement for equal protection from the elements for both teams. So the warm environment teams definitely play their advantage when they can too.

Gillette stadium is and will likely always be open air. We don’t F around in New England.

I think around here (in Michigan) it's about being getting there; not just playing outside or watching the game outside. We had many games postponed Friday night. Sure they were basketball and held indoors anyway but the concern was getting to them and back home safely. Luckily for Detroit and the Lions.....they didn't get much of the nasty weather from the storm system for tonight's game. :)
