which of the changes to society have you struggled with?

People who won't pick up the phone, especially when it is more efficient and/or possibly the more tactful approach. I am a younger Gen-X'er so maybe that is why I feel this way. But there is a correct tool for each job and sometimes the phone... it is the way.

Edit: I'm not talking about answer possible Spam calls, but rather taking the initiative to make a phone call or answer the phone call.

Right before I retired it all his the fan with employees not checking the voice mail on their desk phone or their cell phone, or worse, not even setting it up. Some claimed they didn't have a desk phone number. Boss finally had to issue an ultimatum that if your voicemail on either phone isn't set up and checked, plan on getting a day off without pay.

I viewed the subject line a little differently than what has been posted so far.

I have struggled with how the left and right can't get along at all. Both sides are now basically yelling and screaming at each other and how the others viewpoints are so wrong. It really wasn't that long ago we could have a civil debate for the most part and get along.

Technology. I’m 61 and did not grow up with computers. We didn’t have a computer in our house until our son was 15 in high school in 1997. I still don’t do online banking. Mostly for my husband who is 68 and really doesn’t have any tech skills at all. He struggles enough with his smart phone.

Well yeah but it goes deeper than that. You can’t have a chill debate with people who deny facts and reality. I think social media and people only watching extreme media channels has caused this.

And so it goes, this is why there can't be a civil debate. THAT SIDE OMG THEY WATCH THAT CHANNEL Oh and is it YOUR reality and facts? You see, by already denying their argument by stating they don't have your reality and your facts, then they are wrong. That is why civil debate is dead and your post showed that.

So, just checking sides. If you are a person who watches THAT channel.. whatever it is. But THAT channel loses a very large amount of money in court with evidence and a jury for lying to you about something important, what side should a person be on. It seems like there would be 2 sides..the reasonable " holy cow they lied, I wonder what else they might lie about " and the what..pro lie to muh face?

What has changed? Who is benefitting from the division? What can we do to fix it?

I'm struggling with the division as well, and I don't see an answer. But I do know that when you get beyond the "You must hate so-and-so," people can be wonderful. I look around after every natural disaster, fire, etc. and people pull together to help each other, regardless of "sides." For the most part, when you need serious help, other humans are there for you, and some even become lifelong friends after the incident, regardless of "side".

But for some reason, it takes a crisis to prove that. We can't get along at a political, national and world level for some reason and I can't understand it. I cannot understand why we cannot allow civil debate and why we have to hate each other. I sometimes think it's the media, but then I'm reminded that this stuff has gone on long before media, social or otherwise, was a thing. 24-7 access to media has just magnified it exponentially.

But when push comes to shove, goodness can win out. We just have to figure out how to get there without a major crisis forcing us there. And I honestly don't know how that happens on a larger level. Most of us seem to be able to manage it on a personal level, being friends with people who are not clones of ourselves, but for some reason it doesn't translate to a national or even state level. Wouldn't it be nice if it did?

The whole idea that you can't talk to people you don't agree with. There is zero conversation anymore. Everyone is in an echo chamber. The Politian like it this way. We are so busy fighting each other they have free reign.

The 10% of people on social media driving much of everything as someone seems to think they matter and are ignoring the normies completely.

Most of the population is normies, companies need to ignore the fringe.

There is a polarization that I began noticing in 1994, but that may have just been when I started noticing politics in the first place. The lunatic fringe on both sides has taken control of the congressional caucasus and are driving agendas that most Americans don't like, but the fringes that are the most vocal and pay the most money really control.
The people benefitting are the politicians, political parties and those that control the media channels on both sides. The amount of political editorialization that is done on supposedly straight reported news is shocking when you look at it.
I don't think it changes until a viable third party rises up and starts making waves. It will either force the two parties back towards the middle or will usurp them. I would look forward to debating this on the new board.

While I can relate to many of the struggles above, I'm going to take another angle.

My struggle is the amount of fraud lurking in phone calls, texts and emails. It seems like it increases exponentially each year. While it's always a concern for my personal finances and data, it's made my job increasingly difficult. Clients just don't want to answer their phones and those that do certainly don't want to share any sensitive information without me jumping through several extra sets of hoops these days. I can't fault them, but it's made our jobs that much more challenging.

CNN, MSNBC, Fox and the rest of them. Polarized the country and also(IMO) are trying to fix who wins opponents primary so candidates with most bad baggage are the one they are running against. It's good for their ratings and candidate.

You know, it's funny, because as a kid (80's) I remember that things were getting better as far as acecptance, race relations, inclusivity, etc. Maybe it was because I was a kid, but it felt like we were moving past that. Then suddenly we were not. As the 90's progressed, things became siloed - and not jsut political leanings, but things like what music you listened to. It was noticeable to me. That's not to say things were perfect before that - far from it and I know there were still issues, but it felt like people wanted to at least try to get past that. Now, people have stopped trying.
