Egg Nog

I will also buying my eggnog this weekend. It is the only time in the year that I drink alcohol. I add just a splash of a fine Jamaica rum.

Bourbon is my preference. Rye works as well if you want to cut the sweetness. Someone mentioned the premixed versions. Buffalo Trace used to put out a mix but haven’t seen it in a few years. The rest are just meh. You’re better off making your own mix

Bought a carton in October when it first hit the stores. Bought another carton for Thanksgiving dinner. I drink it straight up......no booze. The egg nog is bad enough for my blood sugar alone, and liquor would send it into orbit.

Gotta indulge though. Booze or not!

I do not drink a lot of eggnog myself. I like it plain right out of the carton just fine w/o adding anything. I remember Culvers having an eggnog flavored frozen custard that was really good.

A couple years ago, I remember getting eggnog flavored seltzer (it was part of a multi-pack of Bud Light Christmas seltzers). It was not as bad as it sounds :rotfl2:

I am the only one in my immediate family that likes Egg Nog. I buy one carton before Thanksgiving and it lasts through Christmas. I like the brand Southern Comfort (it has no booze in it despite the name). I usually drink it plain with a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg but sometimes if I add booze it would be Fireball.

Kahlua. But I also love it without alcohol, just a pinch of nutmeg.

We get the Lactaid brand, since I'm lactose intolerant. But honestly, I think anyone who likes eggnog should give it a try. It reminds me of the very thick and delicious eggnog we got from a farm in North Carolina when I was a kid (pre-lactose intolerance). Amazing stuff!

I get the Califia Nog. Less than half the calories and sugar and pretty tasty. I add half a serving to my protein shake in the morning with a sprinkle of nutmeg. If I’m going to have a rare cocktail I use rum.

Bourbon would be my first choice, then rum. I find the idea of fireball intriguing.
My favorite eggnog is Hood's golden eggnog, but I think they changed the formulation this year; it doesn't taste the same.
No way would I buy the pre-mixed with alcohol/spiked versions of eggnog. Just no.

While we are on the subject, I made an easy, great eggnog pie for T-giving. You add a package of instant vanilla pudding to 1 cup of eggnog, add some nutmeg and/or cinnamon, and beat with the handheld mixer for 3 minutes. Then fold in 2 cups of whipped cream (original recipe called for cool whip but I used the real thing, just beat up some heavy cream, no sugar added) and spread into a pie crust. (I used a grocery-store graham cracker crust but am already considering options on that.) Refrigerate (I put plastic wrap on the top) for a few hours and serve. It was rich and decadent, and tasted just like clouds of eggnog! I am not sure you could add alcohol to this, though; I'm not sure what affect the alcohol would have on the gelatin in the instant pudding.

One of my aunts used to bring an eggnog pie to holidays! I have no idea what recipe she used. Keebler makes a shortbread pie crust, that might be really good with the eggnog (I used it for a lemonade pie and liked it better than the graham cracker crust).

I'm thinking of subbing egg nog for half of the cream in a Golden Cadillac. This could be really good. This could be really bad. If I survive the encounter, I'll let you know how it tastes.

You should throw away the egg nog and just drink the booze

"Pure alcohol like rum, vodka, gin, tequila, and whiskey contains no carbs. In addition, wine, light beer, and some cocktails can be relatively low in carbs."

I haven't had egg nog since I was a kid (not spiked) and I didn't like it. I sometimes wonder if maybe I just never got to try a good recipe, and now that I'm over 21, I might enjoy the boozy version.

Is the stuff in the carton from grocery stores any good? You can buy pre-mixed with booze added, I wonder if that is any good?
I've never had the pre-mixed/pre-spiked version as I can add that myself. The grocery store versions are usually ok. Southern Comfort makes one that is nationally available I think. Whole Foods has a good nog that is sold in a glass jar.
