Disney News, Discussion & an Element of Fun - 2023 Edition

I do hope Disney keeps physical media going in the US at least. I collect the Disney Animation and Pixar films on steelbook 4K from Best Buy. They always do a limited run during the initial home video release of a movie on special steelbook packaging, and I love the artwork on the steelbooks. Plus, playing 4K content from physical media is better than via streaming if you want the best audio and visual experience possible. But I know not everyone cares about that.

Also, there are all the bonus features that aren't usually available on Disney+, like the making-of documentaries, deleted scenes, etc. Sometimes they are on D+, but not everything that the blu-ray/4K format brings.
I've got a big bunch of Disney VHS releases from the 80s and 90s. It is interesting to see the bonus features, especially Jeffrey Katzenberg's comments.

My argument that Halloween is a (heavily commercialized) minor holiday.
Not getting it off from work is not a very convincing argument. I don't get Mexico's Independence day off and it's not a minor holiday for me.

Yes, Halloween is heavily commercialized. But that is only because ppl love it. The importance of a holiday to me is more about how many ppl celebrate it than statutory days off. I have Victoria Day off from work, ask me if I care about queen Victoria.

Do people really do much to celebrate it? Kids trick or treat on the day, maybe your work lets you wear a costume. That's about it.

My neighborhood does a huge Halloween party every year. It's a potluck so everyone brings something and even adults wear costumes.

Haunted houses at events outside of Disney are also extremely popular. Other than HHN I've heard that Knott's Scary Farm in California is one of the best events for Halloween.

I would not say it's as big as Xmas, but it's no small thing for sure.

Just kids trick or treating is by itself a big deal, it brings neighborhoods together in a shared activity. Then some adults take it further and do costume parties. I'd say it's toward the top seasonal events in the US, and elsewhere as well at this point.

So, it's too early imo but I guess it makes sense for companies that run theme parks. I would think Halloween is now one of the biggest money makers as far as season celebrations go, above Valentine's Day and such.

Oh, and I've read that Halloween season is UO's biggest money maker thanks to Halloween Horror Nights. Not sure if it's true, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Yeah, I mean, it's pretty obvious, but Halloween has gotten bigger and bigger. When I was a kid, it was a minor holiday - improtant to kids for sure, but it wasn't that big of a thing. The popularity has exploded, I think in large part because of Disney and other media companies pushing it. It is still the best time to go to the theme parks too!

Maybe it's just my area. The only think notable about Halloween for me is that I try to be more careful driving home from work because kids might be out trick or treating. There aren't any town organized events or anything that I'm aware of.

People go all out here. There’s a cove that’s known as Halloween Cove and the whole cove gets decorated early October and can have long lines just to get through it by Halloween. There’s also multiple corn mazes both haunted and otherwise, haunted houses, etc. Almost as many people decorate for Halloween as they do for Christmas. It has gotten more and more popular in recent years.

Fall decor has started popping up at Magic Kingdom along with spooky merch collections, and Haunted Mansion treats which can only mean one thing…we’re getting even closer to the first Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party of the season. But, before we kick off opening night, we’ve got some scary good news to share.

Disney just announced several new offerings coming to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween parties this fall. As a reminder, these parties will be held on select nights in Magic Kingdom starting August 11th, 2023 through November 1st, 2023. It’s an exclusive nighttime event that you’ll need a separate ticket to attend, different from your regular park day admission.

The new entertainment will include:

  • Adventureland will be taken over by a spirited pirate band and their crew. Be sure to listen for their sea shanties while their shipmates roam the land sharing tales of their explorations at sea.
  • Get ready for even more chances to “Stand Out” with Max Goof and his Powerline party pack at new pop-up parties throughout Magic Kingdom before this popular crew dances onto Main Street U.S.A. ahead of Mickey’s Boo-to-You Halloween Parade.
  • The Seven Dwarfs will be returning to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Even if you are a little bashful, stop by and say hello! They’ll be happy to see you.
  • Mickey’s Boo-to-You Parade will be more villainous than ever, with favorite foes Ursula, Cruella de Vil, the Queen of Hearts, and the newly announced Sanderson Sisters Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabell joining the frightful finale — which you could only see on select Disney Cruise Line sailings last year.

Yes. I am talking about buying the steak itself, not a dinner out. The markup from what that steak actually costs vs. what Disney is charging is how those places make $. The atmosphere and location is why I pay it.

That Filet that I can buy for roughly $20 a pound means 2 -eight ounce cuts. A good filet dinner around here goes from $28 to $50 depending on all the fixings and the type of restaurant.
