With all this talk of luggage choices and carry-ons, I wonder if you ran into anything special with regard to flying Aer Lingus? (I remember reading somewhere they have the most strict carry-on/personal bag limits with regard to size and weight.)
Also, did you post a trip report for Ireland? l'd love to read it
We packed only carry-ons for this trip, plus 1 personal item (day packs). We actually checked the rolling carryons in BOS to DUB because we felt like it and were going to be at the BOS airport for a few hours (we padded our time a fair amount since we were using public transportation from downtown BOS to Logan) -- and we had Biz Class seats so they were obviously no extra charge.
We did NOT check them on return from SNN-BOS (economy) because we didn't have a linked itinerary for our Jet Blue flight from BOS to RDU (we booked Aer Lingus on points first, then bought JB seats much later) and we didn't want to have to go get them from baggage claim before our flight from BOS to RDU that same evening. I used the "bag checker" thing at the AL desk (it was fine) and no one batted an eye about the bags when we boarded. I will say that my backpack was so stuffed that it didn't fit under the seat in front of me. We originally thought we'd buy a duffel to carry "stuff" back from Ireland, (and then check a bag) but we didn't really buy that much and was able to fit everything in our existing bags. My DH ended up cramming my backpack in an overhead after everyone had boarded -- I felt bad because we shouldn't have done that, but we didn't inconvenience anyone else. Otherwise I would have tried to move some items from my backpack to my DHs or my roller bag.
I haven't done a real "trip report" yet, but here's a points breakdown post:
