The Running Thread—2023

I had no intention or plans to run NYC this year, but when you guys were talking about the lottery a few weeks ago and how hard it is to get in, I figured, what the heck, I'll enter. And yep, I got in. First time I have ever tried the lottery. I feel bad for those of you who have tried for years.
I also entered the 2020 lottery on a whim for the first time and got in, don’t feel bad, it is a lottery!

Looking forward running with you and the other 49998 participants 🥳

Feb Totals
Total Distance: 75 miles
Avg Pace: 9:21 min/mile

Not too bad considering I had Covid at the start of Feb and it took awhile to come back from that. Also added in the stairclimber and the exercise bike at the gym for the first time ever in the hope that cross-training will strengthen my left knee.

Add me to the list of unsuccessful NYC marathon applicants (again.) I hope I get to participate one year while I'm still doing marathons, but I guess for this year my luck was used up on the Berlin lottery.

Maurten is now selling a sodium bicarbonate product. I've never given this more than a cursory glance because it seemed like something reserved for short, fast distances, but if Maurten really did figure out the GI distress, that would be interesting at least.

Also, given my previous experience with Maurten products, I'm guessing this also tastes like death.

Admittedly, I didn't click the link, but doesn't that mean you could carry around packs of baking soda for cheaper? Would probably taste just as appetizing. Although Disney Security might take issue with little baggies filled with white powder...

I assume it’ll make you nauseated as it counteracts your stomach acid and foams up like an elementary school science fair volcano all over Main St USA

Here's the thing based on my limited knowledge of bicarb - it apparently DOES result in a big performance gain, but it also will make you need a restroom within a short amount of time, almost guaranteed.

Are the two related? Who can say?

Anyway, apparently Maurten has figured out the GI part. That's the difference.

It's been a while since my last post... again... I think last time I was posting I was starting c25k after being cleared to do so post AFib ordeal. After a few weeks I started having knee pain and after on and off pain I never really got going again. Well I finally had two weeks of no pain and tried day 1 of c25k again. In this instance it was run 1 minute walk 1.5 minutes, repeat 8 times. On run number 7 I hear and feel a pop sound followed by pain. Limp back to the house and see my Dr the next day. MRI scheduled later that week and come to find out I have a "displaced Medial Meniscal tear" in my left knee. Have a procedure/surgery scheduled for March 9th and it looks like 6 weeks before another attempt of c25k. Before I all that happened to keep me motivated I registered for a 5k, that I will no longer be able to run. I could possibly do a c25k day with it at best because that would be 7 weeks after the procedure. It's been a interesting year or so lol. Ill eventually get back out there and have things to post in these threads! Hope everyone is doing well!

@LSUlakes so sorry to hear about the set back! Wishing you a successful surgery and fast recovery!

On the NYCM front, count me in the did not get selected group. Bummed! That means I struck out for both the Chicago and New York Marathons this year. For some reason I thought I was going to get lucky with NYCM, I really want a redo of that race.

So I signed up for the Marine Corps Marathon instead! Oh, the “I just signed up for a new marathon” euphoria!

I think I asked this last year, but I'm going to ask it again:
Shoes for lifting? I noticed that when I started lifting again (albeit for just about 2 weeks before I fell off the wagon again) that my PF/achilles stuff was starting to flare up again, and I'm not sure if wearing a running shoe was aggravating it. I see that new balance makes a "minimus TR" shoe that is a 0 drop and I'm fairly sure that "lifting shoes" are 0 drop.

BUT, it's also not like I'm going to be throwing around hundreds of pounds in squats and deadlifts, so I feel like this could be one of those "the equipment is there, but it isn't necessary for what I'm doing" kinds of things (similar to a plated racing shoe...I'm too slow for it to matter.) Thoughts?

I squat and deadlift barefoot (well, socks). My husband just retired from powerlifting. Before he bought special weightlifting shoes he used converse. He always deadlifts in his converse.

The last thing you want to wear is a running shoe. The soles are too squishy. Nike makes a pair of shoes popular with CrossFitters, but I don’t know the name.
