What is your go to Xmas dish?

Pierogi.

Growing up we had what my grandfather called "Ukrainian soul food." I've dropped the cabbage rolls and assorted stuff, but we do have pierogi every Christmas -- the one thing everyone in my family likes (even DDIL, who can be a somewhat picky eater). Served with prime rib and some kind of green veggie.

Desserts do vary, but I almost always make a chocolate cream or French silk pie (for ME!), because I don't get it any other time of the year, and some kind of fruit pie.

OMG That is great!

What is it?

An appetizer. I'm sure it has a real name, but we never called it anything other than "the shrimp stuff". ~

You just let a brick of cream cheese soften a little and spread it on a plate,
mix a can of tiny shrimp into some jarred cocktail sauce,
pour/spread that over the top,
and serve it with crackers.

(My mom favored Triscuits, and my aunt Toll House originals. Both are good.)

I've also used canned crab instead of shrimp, and that's yummy too.

I always make it on Christmas Eve, partly because I really like it, but also as kind of a connection to my Mom.
💜

That sounds great!

We really don't have a traditional dish right now. It used to be turkey with all the trimmings, but that's way too much work when there are other fun things to do during the day. My sister always does lasagna at her house on Christmas Eve. Christmas dinner is at our house and lately we just cook up whatever sounds fun and interesting. One year it was pasta with a few different meats and sauces to add. Last year was beef, chicken and salmon (for everyone's various tastes in meat) with a few sides. This year, we're doing a taco bar with rice, beans, salad and chips and salsa on the side. Dessert will be whatever I dream up in the next week. The key for us is to keep it fun and easy!

Dessert will always include homemade Struffoli and all holidays include homemade Knorr Vegetable spinach dip with swirl pumpernickel & rye bread.

Christmas Eve is a Feast of Fish with shrimp, scallops & calamari always in attendance for the birthday party.
Christmas Day is always a heavy pasta with ricotta filling, like shells, manicotti or lasagne with meat to break the meat fast from the night before, this year I might try to make my own braciole.

I miss my grandmother's struffoli so very much.

My mom just came home from a visit with her sister and had grandma's recipe pad in tow. Can't wait to make it again, exactly like she did.

This is a photo from the Talisman cookbook I inherited from my own grandma, I'm curious if yours is the same. I wish there would be a new reprint with all the original recipes because mine is falling apart. I love the notes and scribble throughout. I use a Kitchenaid now, much easier.

My sister is making copies as the whole thing is handwritten. I'll have to come back to this to compare!

I bake a ham and make potato salad and macaroni salad. We have the ham cold too, along with the salads. It's not too much work if you boil the potatoes in their skins because it peels right off.
