Marathon Weekend 2023

@Ariel484
Full - Trying to love it...but I don't think I do. It's the giant 30 (and the "I did it" cheesiness) that I don't like. The artwork on the "0" is pretty cute, especially if Mickey and Minnie spin around

Agree, I don’t like the giant 30 (on first glance it’s not obvious it’s for a marathon and maybe something with higher mileage). And I have always disliked the “I did it” on runDisney stuff.

They did me a favor by leaning in so hard with the 80's design. I have no interest in purchasing merchandise for this race. I hope that they offer nice designs for the Princess Half Marathon.

Disney was trying to go with "Saved by the Bell" 90s, but that show started in 89, and ended in 1993, before the first Marathon 🤔

Mid-Training for the Dopey. I have done a ton of Half Marathons and Marathons to indicate a little experience in distance running.

I am dealing with some minor hip abductor pain that is not going away. I have decreased my mid-week runs. I have been run-walking my increased mileage runs on the weekends. I am on the cusp of being in the 8-10 mile range of my long distance runs. Any advice on alleviating the hip abductor pain? Should I give a 1 or maybe 2 week rest before jumping into the next stage of distances?

The hip abductor pain is fairly minimal and actually doesn’t hurt on the run with maybe an occasional 1/10 pain. However, it is later in the day or more the next day that I feel the pain, which is like a 3/10. I feel like I can run through the pain but I am worried the long term impact of doing that especially when I have double digit distances every weekend through November and December.

Anyway a long message but looking for advice from other fellow runners of the same mindset.

Sorry, not a fan of the medals except the 10k. Finally Chip and Dale. I was so excited for the weekend, if these were out at registration someone would have scored my spot.
It’s WDW marathon, it needs to be a Mickey not what looks like a retro birthday cake topper

Yesterday I was cleaning some things on my desk and I came across a quote from my physical therapist that might apply in this scenario. "Things are going in the wrong direction when you start to change your training plan to accommodate soreness."

That is to say, if you need to "take a week or two to rest," it's probably something worth getting checked out. If you can catch it now, it probably won't take too much to fix it. If you wait, yeah, you're flirting with disaster in November and December.

I would stop running and get it checked out ASAP. Hurting more when not running would be a huge red flag to me. It could be nothing more than a strain, but if it is a start of something more serious you’ll be glad you stopped running before it got worse.

SAFD: Training was going well until I broke a pinky toe about a week and a half ago. I have tried two training runs since and cut them both short after a little more than a mile. I was compensating too much for the pain/lack of strength in the toe and didn’t want to hurt something else in the process. Going to try again tomorrow. It’s less purple, so that seems like a good sign.

Injury was very much clutz-induced and non-running related so I should be good to go when the pain dissipates. Giving it a go basically every other day from this point to get back to full schedule as soon as possible.

I think others have said this already, but felt the need to share my experience. If you are feeling the pain when not running, that is worth getting checked out. I ended up losing 1 1/2 years of running while attempting to run through some ankle pain. Ended up being my peroneal tendon and it ruptured. Both my surgeon and my PT said a big clue that I should have taken more seriously was the pain I was experiencing when not running. Hope it ends up being an easy adjustment or short rest to resolve!

Training overall was going well up until last week. On Tuesday we got the news that our dog, who was a part of our family for about 12.5 years, was very sick, so we made the decision to put him down on Wednesday morning. It was the right call, but also completely heartbreaking. I did get all of my runs in, but the last 2 were done as walks - I didn’t have the energy to run after such an emotionally draining time/lack of appetite/little sleep all week etc. Here’s hoping for a normal, boring week this week where I actually get back to running.

And if you will humor me…I can’t stop myself from sharing a picture of my sweet little Archie. RIP ❤️

What a precious boy! I am so sorry. We lost our sweet dog in December, and I will always miss him. I thought it would be painful to look at the many pictures I have of him, but for me, at least, they are comforting. I hope you can also find comfort in the memories that your photos bring to mind. I am so sorry for your pain.

So sorry for your loss. Sounds like you made the best decision, but I am sure that makes it no less heartbreaking.

Thank you. I know we made the right decision but you are right, it’s been a very hard time for us.

Thank you, and I’m sorry for your loss as well. ❤️ I’m starting to smile when I look at my many many many pictures of him so I think I’m heading in the right direction.

I’m still stuck on these medals. They seem so lazy. They essentially just took the artwork for the races, and plastered them on medals. I feel like in previous years they were a bit more creative with them? The “I did it” looks like they had blank space required to connect to the medal that they needed to fill.
The more I look at them the more I dislike them. Although I’m sure I won’t be nearly as critical once I actually get them. Why do they even post photos of the medals ahead of time? I bet people would be a lot less critical if they saw it for the first time at the finish line…

For me what worked in the past - on separate occasions - was doing leg/deadlift workouts (felt like it stabilized my core/hips/upper quads) and when I was on a big Peloton kick. For the latter, I felt like the hour or two of rides a day really strengthened my upper legs and got rid of a lot of my chronic hip issues.

To be honest I had been tracking to see if any marathon slots were opening up. I LOVE the 90’s motif - those were my golden years of visiting the park - but the oversized 30 and “I Did It” just killed any desire I have to plunk down the hundreds for this weekend and plow through accelerated marathon training to do this race.
to each their own, but this has diminished my interest.

Random (spit ball) question but you aren’t driving a ram truck or grand wagoner are you?

If the registration was today, I probably would’ve passed on it. And I too loved the theming when it was announced and I saw the artwork. It just doesn’t work on the medals for me.

Currently trying to go to sleep listening to Celine Dion a little too loud so my pups can’t hear (or at least don’t focus on) the thunderstorms outside. Never want to imagine things without either of them. Very sorry for your loss.

I really don't like the half medal and I'm not really sure why.
I hate the half medal I have decided. Luckily I have the one from this year, which I think is gorgeous. I am kind of mad at myself for not finishing Goofy this year because the medals were so much prettier. Oh well.
