Anyone else already nursing sick kids after *just* starting school?

Ugh. This blows! School JUST started last Thursday. Sunday morning my youngest started complaining of chest pain and a cough. He napped and woke up later in the day absolutely burning up with fever and feeling awful. Of course I figured it was covid and we began taking precautions and separating him from his older brother (they share a room and neither has had covid yet). Later that evening, he threw up. Covid test was negative. He has a super severe sore throat and it's now day 3 of fever.

Fast forward to today. Older son woke up feeling sick to his stomach and went back to sleep only to wake up to throw up. He is in the adult transition program for special needs adults so he is now missing the first full week of that after going for only 3 days.

I actually don't think it's covid, though. Younger sons three tests have all been negative. I did take him yesterday to the CVS drive thru for a combination Flu/Covid PCR tests so we are waiting on those results.

Is anyone else dealing with kids illness this soon after school starting up again? Seems too early for flu, but at this point, it seems like there is no rhyme or reason to viruses in circulation.

Yes!!! My 17 year old started back to school last Thursday. Went to the football game on Friday night. On Saturday, he woke up with a sore throat. Yesterday, he started coughing. No fever. This morning, he had a slight fever of 99.8. Tested negative for Covid.

Fever/vomiting/sore throat could be strep. My kids were sick constantly in preschool, and college. Dd19 has been back a week, thinks she has a UTI already.
I agree that DL should take the sick kids to a med fast to test for strep my med fast location is externally fast wait time

Yeah, the next step will be the pediatrician for a strep swab if the covid/flu test both come back negative. I didn't realize strep could have such a sudden and severe onset, though. Is that common? The sore throat didn't develop until 36 hours after the other symptoms. It was scratchy at first.

Boo! Sorry your child is also sick. It's so crazy how quickly things start going around once school starts. Hope your son feels better soon!

One of my kids always vomited with strep, I’m a strep fan because antibiotics usually clear it up quickly. I do think Covid separation lowered immune systems.

I'm more wondering about the chest pain/cough which was the initial symptom, followed by high fever and fatigue. He also has nasal congestion and a runny nose.

My kids never really had strep except for one time many years ago and it was just a sore throat and fever that time. No other symptoms.

I hope everyone's kids are feeling better. Before school started, my boys went to their grandparents for a week. Two of them came back with a nasty cold. We kept them home from all activities.

We don't start school until next week but we've already prepped the kids that they'll be wearing masks for just this reason! Be careful--the latest round of covid doesn't seem to show up positive on the at-home tests until day 4 or 5.

Yeah, that's why I took him for a PCR test, just to be sure.

Although I had the "latest round" in July and many of my friends did as well and we all got positive rapid tests on day 1 of mild symptoms. After over 48 hours of pretty severe symptoms and 3 negative tests, I have to believe it's the flu, not covid.

I would take to pedi to be listened to.

Yep, same here. My kids and their friends, but no COVID yet thankfully (I give it another week before that ramps up). Down here it’s not been strep either, just “a virus.”
