And yet another school massacre

that is actually true

A federal appeals court on Wednesday struck down a California law that prohibits people under the age of 21 from buying semi-automatic rifles, calling the ban unconstitutional and a “severe burden” on the Second Amendment rights of young adults.
I don't really care enough go go back and see if it was you or someone else but it remains false while what you quoted is true.

Big difference between automatic and semi automatic.

Automatic is effectively illegal unless you have a lot of money and jump through atf hoops and live in the right state.

All of that is not normal. I’m sorry you feel it is.
Actually it is very common and has been normal at inner city schools for many years. Gang violence and drugs have caused armed police not only to be inside schools, but to even be stationed/patrol on streets leading to school. Shootings occur daily in these neighborhoods and kids are always in danger. It is heartbreaking for any human to have to live like that. But it is common.

As for the families of the the children and teacher slain today, I can't comprehend what they are going through at this hour.

It is all just so depressing.

Some Americans think this is an acceptable price to pay so they can have their gun rights so the rest of us suffer.
Makes me sick.

Felt totally safe sending my kids to school. Armed officers with guns at school. Great deterrent for any would be shooter is getting shot in return.
Sure, let’s solve the gun violence problem by adding more guns. Do you really want to live in a society where everyone is armed? Do we want to turn schools into prisons?

Can we hold off the gun rights squabbling? This just happened for crying out loud.
When do you suggest we discuss it? This is what, the third or fourth shooting incident in the last two weeks? When would be an appropriate time? Should we wait for the next one, because I’m sure it won’t be too long.

What can we do? Laws must change. Other countries have mental health issues. Other countries have bullying issues. Other countries have racism. Only the US has an epidemic of gun violence and it happens way, way too frequently. It is simply unacceptable. In the next few hours and days, we will see pictures of these poor murdered children. How can anyone look at them and not want to end this insanity? Once again, I’m just so disgusted.

That arguing tends to get these threads closed. That would be a shame.

I should have maybe said, instead, that this isn’t normal on a global level. Yes, there may be third world countries where it’s normal, but certainly not in first world countries.

I don’t want this thread to devolve, so I’m not willing to risk it any further.

My bad, semi automatic. Got it.

From the BBC:
Gun deaths are now the leading cause of death for US children and teenagers, overtaking car crashes, according to research released in April.

In 2020 - the last year for which complete figures are available - 4,300 young Americans died of firearms-related injuries.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, the overall rate of gun deaths of all kinds - including suicides, murders, and accidents - rose by 29.5%, twice that of the wider population.

Gun violence in the US has steadily increased since the Covid-19 pandemic began in early 2020.

I responded to your post. I have exercised restraint in previous threads on this topic but admittedly, today, my emotions got the best of me. Extreme sadness, anger and frustration. Are you familiar with the expression SSDD? IMO, it needs to be discussed, that is part of the problem. Won’t say anymore. :(

I'm not going to get into the back and forth and get points, but did want to report that CNN is now saying that it's 17 dead children...and 3 dead teachers. So, the original numbers don't seem to be the case any longer....sadly.
Oh my. The loss is heartbreaking.

As a parent I don't feel my child is safe at school.

My child is a teacher, and I'm afraid for him every day. My child was hired to teach - not to be target practice or body armor. My child is changing districts this year - location was a huge reason BUT the final straw? They were asked to provide online work for a kid suspended - why I don't know because old days that was instant zeroes. No one told him why. He told a department head .... OH, young man was suspended because he was caught on his way to MY CHILD's class ... with a gun. Had another kid not turned him in, he would not have been caught, no armed guards or security could have stopped him. Sure it could happen anywhere BUT when it happens all teachers should be notified, cause you know their friends in the class might need closer watching OR what if he came back after his suspension, shouldn't my child know? Shouldn't my child know a kid almost walked through his door with a gun?

So sad the low priority we put on protecting our children (and teachers cause they are someone's child too.)

My entire family is or was educators. My mom feels the same way. She retired the year after Columbine. She says she will not rest until she knows all of us are home from school safely every day. I retired a last year. My sister is retiring this year. My DH in 2 years. My BIL has no desire to retire, but can at anytime. My niece has 23 more years.

I had a student bring a gun to school because he wanted to shoot another student because he beat him at a video game. The only class they had together was my class and the would-be victim sat right next to my conductor's podium. Thankfully another student turned the kid in.

As for the suspended student receiving work online while suspended, federal law requires that schools must still provide educational services for the student during the suspension. This includes providing homework and allowing the child to make up any missed tests or assignments. If the student is expelled, the school no longer has to provide educational resources unless the child has an IEP for a special need. This has been the law for at least 40 years as I learned about it in my educational law class while in college. My school actually lost an expulsion hearing because a teacher did not provide assignments for the suspended student.
