I've been trying to get more information on the Disney company’s financial support of sponsors and co-sponsors of the Parental Rights in Education bill (aka ”don’t say gay” bill). With the promotion of Gay Days, rainbow merch, the new “inclusivity“ key, etc., this seems to me to be duplicitous. I admit, though, that I am not a Florida resident and don‘t know the politics of the area. :rainbow:

I have concerns too. Our eldest is trans and has been raised on a steady diet of Disney since they could toddle. We're shareholders, DVC owners and AP holders, but can't support a company that doesn't support the rights of those that we love.

Admittedly, I haven’t dug very deep into this news but I’d be more shocked than normal if Disney provided money to sponsors specifically for the purpose of this bill. Is that what people are saying? Not saying I’d be surprised if they financially backed any of the politicians in general -because I’m sure they do. Just seems off-target when they are publicly known already to be very inclusive with cast members and guests.

The bill doesn’t take away rights from anyone, but instead gives rights to the parents of kindergarten to third grade students concerning their children’s education. Many parents think teaching any sexuality to 5-8 year olds isn’t age appropriate and would prefer those topics to be discussed in the home, and a public education to be the basics such as math, science, language arts and history.

Maybe something here ?

You are being naive if you actually think that is what this bill was meant for or how it will actually be used. This was to bolster political support from a more extreme group of individuals. Some of those same individuals will 100% use this to take away the human decency and rights of students and families who are different than they are and/or do not share the same beliefs.

They will use this to intimidate and threaten districts into taking huge steps backwards in terms of inclusiveness. You already see the parents who protest against library books that have a story about 2 moms or 2 dads. This will be a tool they use to bully schools into not being able to correct a student using a slur, not answer a simple question of a student or even just acknowledge different students lives and realities.

I have worked in schools for years and have seen the extreme ignorance and entitlement of some ppl.

I don't know any district or state that teaches any kind of sexual education to K-3rd graders. This is NOT at all what this bill is about. It's just a facade for their agenda.

I am deep into studying politics, deep. The situation in Florida is frightening for LGBTQ/TRANS and the Don;t Say Gay bill. De Santis will sign it this week. I am disappointed that Disney is indeed backing GOP members in Florida. I won;t spend my money there.

Has Disney given money to politicians that are against the bill? I'm guessing so. I'm willing to wage a dole whip that Disney (along with many large businesses) support politicians from MULTIPLE parties. They're going to "cover their bases".

They give money to politicians that support THEIR cause. I’d agree that if the same politicians blatantly oppose something you stand for, they’re faced with a moral dilemma ….

The fact that this is even something political candidates find a good use of time and energy is frighting. The world is growing and more and more LGBTQ+ everyday. Don't these politicians know once there "older" voters kick the bucket there will be way less people to vote for this kinda hate.

Disney needs to make a real statement on this.. and not hid behind there rainbow mickey ears.

The jumping to conclusions about this bill is ridiculous. Its scope is stated clearly: to keep teacher-led sexuality discussions out of elementary school classrooms, because not all families share the same sexual values and want their young children being taught about it at school. And several posters keep freaking out, assuming it's really intended for other purposes & going to lead to all kinds of other things.

Any curb on the woke agenda is a threat, it seems. Any hint of the possibility that not everyone shares the same point of view.
Even if this bill is alllll about what you say (which I don't think it is) are you saying that if Sammy has 2 mom's he can't talk about it? Or if little Sara says she loves girls even tho she's like 5 and just loves her girlfriends.. she's gonna be taken aside and told not to say that ? And confuse her?.

What's a sex talk to you? Talking about how to perform sex? Because no elementary school is doing those kinda talks right now. So what are they trying to stop here?

No bill should be for Karen to clutch her pearls because she's homophobic/transphobic.

The bill is about teacher-led discussions. You just gave examples of student comments, not teacher-led discussions. Teacher-led discussions of sexuality (including sex, sexual orientation, sex changes) in elementary school are what the bill is trying to prevent. There is absolutely no need for an elementary school teacher to lead discussions about sexuality.

Were there a lot of "teacher-led sexuality discussions" in elementary schools going on that necessitated this bill in the first place? It feels like an answer to a problem that didn't exist.
Not a lot, only a small number of cases that got a lot of attention in conservative press. The bill is to prevent it from spreading and coming to more schools.

Specifically, what happened in those cases were schools bringing up the topic of sex changes in elementary school class discussions (even in primary grades), encouraging a child to change genders, including calling the child a different name & pronouns at school, while intentionally keeping it a secret from parents, who they suspected might be unsupportive of their child pondering a sex change. The secrecy is especially problematic, given that in some areas, minors can obtain sex change drugs and procedures without parental consent.

Where is this happening? At most did a few gay teachers get asks a question and they answered it honestly.? I can't see any teacher adding this to there curriculum.

Again.. who is this for because talking about sexuality is a odd way to put things. Is mrs.reed talking about sexuality when she says "her wife" or vise versa? Are teachers not aloud to be gay or have families? Keep standing on that rock it's just wrong all he way around.

Just read above with some examples. Most of these are mom/dad pissed that summer likes to be a boy and be called Jacob and the school than uses the new name and the parents find out and are pissed off. That's just bad parenting and not something a bill needs to fix.

So, a pearl-clutching answer to a problem that really didn't exist. Gotcha.

See my post above for what has actually occurred in a few classrooms.

A teacher mentioning her wife in passing is not leading a classroom discussion about sexuality.

First, How many of you have actually read the law? Not what this media or that media says about the law, but what it actually says. I admittedly have not. I also don’t live in Florida, so it’s not real high on my priority list. But if you’re going to have a strong opinion one way or the other about a law, you really need to read the actual law Word for Word.

Second, companies are always going to support one candidate or another who best supports their business priorities. Believe it or not, a law that deals with a school setting is probably not too high on Disney’s radar. And the proponents of the bill have other agendas that may align with what Disney feels affects their business. Because the world is not black and white and just because you don’t agree with someone on 1 issue, doesn’t mean you won’t agree with them on another.
