The remarkable staying power of the DISboard

:earsgirl: Johnny-Come-Lately here; 2006. I joined to buy a Tour Guide Mike custom itinerary for our first trip to WDW. Never been back there (we’re Disneyland people) but I’ve never left here. Back then it was strictly the Trip Planning board for me - I’ve got no idea how I found the CB. :goodvibes

I was researching our first and only family vacation to WDW in December 1998, and bought a book in a bookstore (remember those?) that had a link to a website called Readers Clubhouse. So I went there, and a moderator on that forum was also a moderator here on the Disboards, and invited us to check it out. So, I did, and although I visited some other Disney sites and have nothing against them really, this became my go-to spot to get latest information about WDW. We went on vacation June 1999, and I just stayed on to share what I learned and pay back what others had helped me with for my vacation. At that time, I think there were five boards, and then they added a Disneyland board. Back then, posts on the DL board would stay on the first page for over a week. All that changed when DCA opened and the 50th anniversary. I also remember that I was really nervous the first times I posted on the Community Board.:lmao:

I've made a lot of friends on this site, some of them close, personal friends, and learned things, too. I don't think a question has been asked that someone didn't have an answer or real experience to share. And when it's really needed, the community rallies around each other. I like that we have a place to come that is relatively safe to talk about stuff, make each other laugh, and comfort each other when we need it.

I joined June 29, 2001 so celebrated 20 years this year. I love the knowledge I gain and sense of community of mostly like minded folks who want to discuss things in a welcoming community (for the most part)!. I also did a moderator role on the cruise board for a few years and that was very rewarding. I know how important the Dis was during 9/11 to be able to connect and share a sense of empathy with everyone as we all were in shock that day. I also enjoy seeing other peoples' point of view of topics I might not of thought of. Love being part of this community!!! Spend most of my Dis time on the Community Board and the Disney Cruise Line Board.

I was a lurker for years before joining. I remember coming on here as well as Tour Guide Mike when planning our visits with our DD when she was 18-24 months, around 2009-2010. Finally mustered enough courage to actually register in 2012.

I have disappeared time and again, but always come back to find new WDW & DLR information as well as participate in the community forums. I remember my first post in the community board someone called me a troll because they thought I was new, but I had over 500 posts (just not on the community) and called them out on it. To their benefit, they did apologize, and that’s when I figured ok I will stay a little while.

I enjoy that we can have differences of opinion on all things but it is respectful. Although, I must admit, once in a while when threads go off the rails and drama ensues, I grab my popcorn and enjoy! popcorn::

I found the DIS as a link off Dave's Disney Cruise Line Tribute page. I lurked for about a year, and only when I went to join the DIS did I realize it wasn't a sub-forum of Dave's page. Dave folded his website several years ago. Some here knew Dave personally, I believe he was/is a long haul trucker. Anyone still keep in touch with Dave?

Here is a snapshot of Dave's page from the archives. http://web.archive.org/web/20060425202700/http://www.dcltribute.com/

I went down a rabbit hole looking up his posts, which then led me to Shirley (from a Perfect Gift). So many good people have been on these boards.

Another one here since 2000. Back then, mostly hung out in the Rumors & News section, oh and the Collector's Forum when Pin Trading was new and hot, then moved on to the Scrapbooking Boards, and now mostly just pop in wherever I need info (which right now, means reading the DLR section).

Also 2006 for me. - DS was 5, and it was his first "big" Disney trip. (Before that, he had only been to MK for a day while visiting relatives as a toddler.) I don't remember the first question I asked, but I've been here ever since, and enjoy hanging out on the Community Board even when I don't have a trip in the works.

I sometimes refer to the DIS as "the font of all knowledge" - whatever your question is, somebody knows and is glad to help. :goodvibes (And it feels good to help others as well!)

Plus, it was a social lifeline during the early months of Covid!

I started using it around 1999/2000 to help plan a trip. Basically, I would follow along on threads getting ideas. I didn’t really think of signing up because I never really thought about posting. Finally, in 2005(?) I needed to sign up to post something ...it took me a while to see that it was becoming as much community as a forum for information.

Been here on and off for almost 8 years.. Found it when I was planning for a cruise, and been hooked since.
I was a big fan of forums when the internet became real prominent ~20 yrs ago
There was this thing where you got to read forums/posts on your email platform - can't remember its name.
And when that was gone I went to online forums - I'm grateful this place exists as I mostly dislike social media.

Now, that said, I wish this board had more versatile features such as the ability to go back to your "likes", maybe you saved some interesting tidbit of information and you want to go back to it later.
Also, they should let ppl delete their posts. Sometimes you make a quick mistake or had a question that was answered quickly so you want the post deleted.

Anyway, thank you to those who maintain and keep this forum such a great place.
