Boma Buffet

I can't wait to hear the reviews from today at Boma. I too am hoping for the soups! They were so delicious!

If you are concerned about touching serving utensils then just bring disposable gloves, put them on before you serve your food to your plate, take your dish to your table, go to the restroom, remove and throw away your disposable gloves, wash your hands and go enjoy your meal.
As appealing as that sounds as a dining experience… and it actually occurred to me… there isn’t anywhere, including Boma that would induce me to pay that kind of money to go through that routine. :rolleyes1 Not when there are so many alternatives available.

I’ve had 3 DVC stays at AKV post Covid with Jambo pretty well shuttered. While I was looking forward to Boma reopening, I am very disappointed that more attention was not paid to minimizing Covid transmission…. having CM dish up the food as you make your choices, for example, seems like a simple improvement.

Will be returning in November… hoping Delta numbers are better and while I’ll miss Boma, I’ve always loved the offerings at Jiko and I’ll look forward to dining there

DFB has the Boma Dinner menu on its website. The soups are there!!! You can see photos of all the stations. The only thing that I can see missing is the Hummus.

My understanding is that the CDC sorry, looked it up after I wrote it and mostly see this came from WHO states touch transmission is highly unlikely, right? I think of Covid precautions were on a scale from 0-10 (0 = nothing, 10 = not leaving the house since March '20), I've been close to a 7/8 - but I'm genuinely wondering how the act of getting food at a buffet is a concern (for me, being inside, no masks, no distancing, etc would be the concerns but because of the likelihood of aerosolized transmission). Is there an element (I haven't been to a buffet since all of this began) that I'm not foreseeing/thinking about (I ask because I booked Boma for a meal, if I still go in Sept - which I'm currently leaning against)?

It looks like Boma's back!! I'll know tonight- we have a 7:25 ADR!!
If you can, would you ask about the soup rotation? There use to be a schedule of the days of the week they prepared each soup. We are going in Oct and I would love to know what soups we are going to be able to have! Thanks! Enjoy your meal!

This is from the CDC website guidelines for restaurants
Avoid offering any self-serve food or drink options, such as buffets, salad bars, and drink stations. This limits the use of shared serving utensils, handles, buttons, or touchscreens and helps customers to stay seated and at least 6 feet apart from people who do not live in their household.”

This is why I am disappointed in the way Disney decided to implement the buffet opening at Boma. Wish they had implemented more precautionary measures. But many will go regardless…

I plan on going. In fact, I have an ADR for our October trip. I’ll pack gloves and wash my hands each time. Some won’t think it’s worth it to do that. That’s fine. I’m so used to washing and sanitizing that it really won’t matter.

Yes! I go for the oxtail stew and a couple of other items that I love. I wish that they just sold a few of those soups at the Mara. Soup is one of the easiest things in the world to make and sell.

Very surprised that the buffet is self serve..just finished watching a video of it..

especially after watching the videos of DCL’s buffets..where everything is served to you

A few times in the past we have gotten the Boma soup from the night before at Mara.

Thank you! Very helpful

We had dinner at Boma tonight (Saturday 8/21). It was pretty much "business as usual," with some of our Boma favorites. There was salmon, ribs, chicken, and some cut of beef (it was VERY good), olive oil potatoes (delicious), a sort of corn-souffle, four soups (butternut squash, lamb curry, seafood stew, and chicken sweet potato chowder), quite a few salads/cold offerings (I didn't actually get that far, but DD had several options on her plate), rolls, etc. Desserts included bread pudding, cookies, mini cupcakes, zebra domes, and four or five different pastries. The food was VERY good. There weren't many patrons- I bet it was less than half-full, and they spaced out the parties. I think the people closest to us were probably 12 feet away (?). There were hand sanitizing stations set up, too. It seemed very much like the Boma of old, with one exception: None of the employees that I could see were from any of the African countries. I suppose this makes sense, given the restrictions on flying and entering the US, but it was still a surprise. All in all, I didn't feel like my life was endangered, although we did use hand sanitizer every time we came back from the buffet line. I also saw one table that had disposable gloves; they seemed to have a glove on what I'd guess was their "serving" hand and would strip the glove off so it was inside out, so the "exposed" part of the glove was inside itself.

I asked about the soup rotation but the server said that they don't have an actual rotation set up yet- the schedule is only set up for about 2 weeks at a time so he had no idea with the actual rotation will be. I guess they are taking it a day at a time, pretty much. I will say- EVERYONE seemed really happy to be there!

Thank you for reporting back! I was hoping you had not forgotten us!

It all sounds delicious! I can hardly wait for our turn in October. Thank you too for asking about the soup rotation! That was really nice of you! Maybe by the time we go they will have a rotation down pat.

I think we will miss the cultural representatives too. It was always so interesting to talk to them about their home countries!

We had a 5:00 reservation tonight. I figured having the first reservation of the night would slightly minimize the COVID exposure of shared serving spoons. I was happy to see they were still doing a little opening show. A couple of the waiters manned the drums while everyone clapped along. Then when the first few parties entered the restaurant the rest of the staff clapped for them. It was really nice.

Are reservations already booked up into October? Tried for breakfast two weekends in a row, and all full!
