Can anyone tell me a little more about the differences between the two carriers?
Thank you all! I ended up booking Frontier, as it seems to have a bit of an edge over Spirit. I'm a little nervous, as there is only one direct flight per day, and only three days per week to/from my airport, so fingers crossed it goes well. Back up plan is that there are three other airports within a couple hour's drive that have Frontier flights, so we wouldn't necessarily need to wait two days to get on an other plane. As long as we get down there, I don't think I'd totally mind being delayed a day or two on the return
I bought the tickets at the airport, and that saved me a few hundred dollars more. While it clearly is barebones (limited ticketing counter hours), and the employees didn't seem very experienced (one guy had no idea how to sell me a ticket "It's my third day"), everyone was polite and apparently helpful to the limits of their abilities. That's something anyway. I feel like it's much easier to be patient when people seem to be honestly trying.
So, I've pulled out my tape measure to figure out which of our backpacks will fit in the personal belonging sizer, and I'll do laundry down there. I mean, we're going to Florida in the summer - how much do we really need to pack? We will bring snacks for the plane, and water bottles we can fill past security. It would be much easier if TSA would allow obviously sealed soda cans through security, but we'll make do with flavor packets added to water.
