REAL ID requirement for air travel postponed till 2023

Due to the incompetence of the DMV and the State dragging their heels to implement Real-ID, here in Oregon we couldn't even attempt to get one until July of 2020. And then covid. Appointments to go to DMV (for any reason) are 4-6 months out, depending on location. So this is good news for us, I guess.

In PA, we were supposed to get it by Oct 2020. Then Covid. The DMV shut down. My husband and I both needed photos taken last year (every 4 years), but no go. We were sent new licenses with our old photos on them.

So, not a procrastinator by choice! And now I'm hoping my birth certificate is "good enough." :confused3

Not surprised the deadline has been pushed back. Covid certainly had an impact, but certain states were already having administrative issues even before covid caused many offices to close.

I guess I lucked out renewing my license in December 2019 and being able to get my real ID at that time. It was expiring Feb 2020 so I had to get a new one anyways. Oh and I had a new copy of my birth certificate as I could not find mine when I went to get TSA Pre Check (found old copy right after that), so I had ordered one from the state/county of my birth and received in about a week. We had to order one for my Dad too and his took a lot longer to receive with a denial because my mother requested it and not him.

When I flew in both March 2020 and March 2021, the TSA agent both times thanked me for having already updated to the Real ID. That was kind of strange.

Same. I think they’ve been asked to do that.

Since my name changed when I got Married I had to show my marriage certificate also.

my license was expiring in mid march 2020, went to the local AAA office to renew and got the Real I.D. in February 2020; glad to have gotten it done.

Yup things are a cluster flub in PA. My license had to be renewed by the end of June last year and the DMVs had just reopened. I got caught in between when the DMVs reopened and they started sending the licenses in the mail with old photos. I was told I could not renew by mail and had to wait in line for a new photo for hours with the new haphazard covid protocols just put into place. They were not issuing Real IDs due to covid so we could only get original licenses and then were told to come back before Oct 2021 and pay again for a real ID !?

On top of that, my passport expired early this year and you need to use the USPS to renew that ... and the USPS has been a mess as well!

Basically this extension has been great news for me as I'm planning to fly down to WDW in early Nov, although I hope to have my passport renewed by then.

and you can't show them the one that the minister gave you that is signed and sealed. You have to get a certified one from the town in which you were married...even though that one was originally filed by the minister so, is in fact, the same exact thing as the copy the minister gave you.

correct. I think it is because it is not official (legal)until filed. My State one looks different than the one the Officiant signed

Our state (Kentucky) was one of the last to offer the Real ID. It wasn’t available when we renewed in late 2018. We thought we’d have to travel with our passports until we had to renew our license again in late 2022. Now, it looks like we don’t have to.

Yeah, it's just mind-boggling to me that some states are still almost 10 years behind the curve. Here in Florida, I've had REAL ID for years and years. smh.
A lot of states felt like it wasn’t any of the federal government’s business and dragged their feet on purpose.

Yes, I know. Or...they used that as an excuse to try to avoid a considerable expense to convert.

But at some point, somebody has to enforce the requirement or they are just penalizing taxpayers whose states obeyed the law.

Is there any reason to get a Real ID if you have a passport? I see no need for one if I keep my passport current.

My (and DH's) Virginia photo is from 2008! They've been pushing online renewals so have been doing it that way and I find it's amazing we haven't been required to get new photos.

My current license doesn't expire until 2023 and RealID wasn't available for my last renewal, but it's been hard to get a DMV appt so was happy to read about the extension (I have two other forms of ID I can use so wasn't too stressed).

My teen saw my photo a few months ago and she was shocked. She wasn't even two when that pic was taken lol.

Not really, although having Real ID saves you from carrying around a passport for domestic travel. In may states it's easier to get a Real ID with an active passport as you don't need to provide the DMV with many other forms of ID to qualify.
