Transfer DVC Points - practical question

I have managed to rent some of my DVC points.

But the person wants them transferred.

Practically how do people go about it? Do they pay after they have been transferred?

If so, I guess I have no way of knowing they will pay.

If I ask them to pay up front, they have no way of knowing I will do it.

Or I ask them to pay 50%, transfer and then hope they pay the other 50%

How do people usually do it?

I have gotten transfer points a couple of times. I always paid in full first and then had the points transferred to me. Transfer points can be nice for you, because you don't have to worry about managing reservations and adding magical express, etc. Just be aware that you can only transfer (In or Out) once per use year.

I will only transfer with full payment. DVC will not get involved if there is an issue,

It is a matter of trust to do it this way. One other option as you said is a split, but if I did it that way, I would take 75% upfront.

Thanks...... Its not like a reservation where I have control and can cancel it.......

I've done several transfers to other DVC members and I have also taken transfers from DVC members. Usually the person taking the transfer pays 100% upfront and then the transfer happens.

Usually, I get the other DVC Member's number, their full name, and address. A transfer is a final transaction, so you just want to be sure that you are having the CM transfer the points to the right account. I usually ask the CM to check the name/address on the account prior to me making the transfer.

I'm sure you probably have checked, and know this, but banked or borrowed points cannot be transferred.

Good luck with your transaction!

Yes I knew only current ones can be transferred. As I am in the UK and the majority of renters are in the USA asking for 100% up front will probably make them jumpy.

I guess I could do it via Paypal so they could chargeback if I didn't transfer.

Can you do transfer via chat or does it have to be over the telephone?

I always do it by phone. Some CMS say it needs to be a 3 way call. but I never had and when one suggested it, I simply said I’d call back and talk to someone else. When I did, they took care of it.

Also, do not mention to the CM payment is changing hands as some will not complete as the POS says it’s not allowed.

I've never had a CM tell me that a transfer has to be a 3-way call. I do the same as Sandisw -- I just call with the other member's number, have the CM check the information (name/address) -- and make the transfer. Yes, do not say anything about payment as Sandisw said, it could put a halt to the transaction.

I would think the easiest way to do payment, since you are in the UK, is to take the payment via Paypal. That way Paypal does the currency conversion for you. I've heard of renters working with people on the UK and sending a check to the UK owner for payment, but that would probably be too time consuming if the person is waiting on the points to be put in to their account.

They can. But still left with the same issue. Trust on both sides :)
That's always the way it is with any DVC Rental/Transfer situation. Some people have used escrow services (I did this once) but, it is cost prohibitive. Guess it all depends on the person paying because they usually bare the expense.

Hi, for the 3-way call, will MS call the person receiving the transfer? I don't want or need his contract number, and it just seems like having MS be able to put me on hold while taking the receiver's account info is best. Just don't know if they're willing to do that. Has anyone done that recently?

I have never done it will a 3 way call but I don’t think they will make the call. You and the other member should be on the line and then get MS into that call.

I have gotten that info and just given it to MS. They won’t give you any info or even confirm the name on the account.

For those of you that have done a point transfer recently, did you get any confirmation from the MS? Has any one heard of horror stories such as points being pulled from one account, but not properly deposited to another?

I am preparing for my first transfer of DVC points and want to make sure both myself and the potential recipient feel more comfortable with the process. Thanks.

From the buyers side I always paid 50% ahead and the balance the day of the transfer

Never had an issue and I have done 3 to 4 transfers over the years to other members...and two within my own memberships.

Last year, the CM said it had to be a three way call and I told him never have done it that way and that I’d just call back and get a different CM.

The second CM did it without issue, gave me confirmation and then double checked the points were in the correct receiving membership.

Members are allowed to transfer/receive once per Membership per Use Year. We are allowed to transfer from the current and next Use Year.

At this time, all DVC Members are in their 2020 use Year, so points may be transferred from/to another Members 2020 and 2021 Use Year. The UY month does not matter since the transferred points will retain their original DVC Resort and Use Year month. The points are be put into a virtual account within the receiving Member's account. On Feb1, those with a February Use Year will be able to transfer in/out points from the 2022 Feb Use Year (all members can already transfer/accept points from any 2021 Use Year).

Once transferred, the points may be banked for an additional year of use.

My understanding is that the virtual account may be viewed online and those points may be used when making reservations online. Until this improvement, transferred points could only be used (or confirmed) by calling MS. I have not personally experienced this improvement.

Enjoy! :)

I recently received transfer points. I paid, then the owner called MS and emailed me after to confirm I could see them on my dashboard. I could.

I can use them to book online within the 7 month period. Beyond that I have to call as it won’t let me (I get a message that I’m trying to book outside my booking window). I wanted to make a res at the 11 month period so I called and MS made them. Went smoothly. Only thing is that you lose the extra hour for booking right at 11 months as MS opens at 9am, so high demand properties may be challenging.
