Will you be ok jobwise with this nightmare?

I'm a federal employee directly supporting military essential work so I'm okay. My husband is a commercial building trades worker. He is currently working with the White House on a project. If that project is halted, he will be sent home with no pay which is about half of our income. So it's a waiting game here. He was set to retire this year. He does have a pension but he also has a 403b(I think) account, like a 401K. It's lost a significant amount of money. I don't think that will stop a retirement because we weren't going to tap into it until our late 60s (he's 57) so I'm sure that will come back.

My husband’s job is essential, or life-sustaining (PA Governor term), so he’s still working. I’m thinking he’ll have work for the duration of this, but who knows.

I’m a teacher and right now I’m still getting paid. I think they are planning on continuing to pay us as this week we are preparing distance learning material and we’ll transition to online learning starting the following week. At least that’s the plan for now.

We're a very small business as an independent construction contractor and OK in the near term. Focusing on 1 bigger job now and so far NJ is allowing our job site to continue. That work will hopefully continue through April. Uncertain beyond that. Usually we're doing several smaller jobs per month, relying on repeat customers who are multi-property owners and homeowners through word of mouth.

We've weathered lean years before so we're trying to be optimistic. As long as we have food and a roof and each other, we can make do and be thankful and hope better years come again.

We just had a big layoff where I work last week. My company is related to the cruise industry, enough said. I am still employed right now but I suspect that won't last long. Hopefully DH can stay employed through this. I really feel bad for everyone losing their jobs. If DH stays employed we should be able to weather the storm. Thoughts and prayers for all who are out of work.

DH and I are retired but because of our "underlying" problems (DH is diabetic and I have that lung disease ) it's not about the $$; it's about Stayin' Alive........now know why I always loved that song. ;)

DS #1 works from home but wife works with Dialysis patients so she goes to work and probably always will.
DS #2 and wife work from home and I think their jobs are pretty stable.
DS #3 is an ATC at Indianapolis Airport so he's still good unless planes don't fly anymore. :(

I'm a speech pathologist for a school district. We have moved to remote learning, and next year's district budget was approved the week before the state ordered schools to close. Between the budget approval, my evaluations, and my seniority (2nd longest employed SLP in the district out of 5), there's no reason I shouldn't continue to have a contract next year. Because we have moved to remote learning, we are being paid now.

My husband is less secure. He is in sales at a car dealership. However, they have approved a minimum of 2 weeks of payment for their sales team should the govt shut them down. The dealership has been in business for 95 years so they have weathered many economic storms. They are currently still open, and my husband still sold multiple cars this week. Only time will tell. He's only been there a year, so I'm nervous. However, we can pay the bills that aren't owed to mom and dad on just my salary. So we will make it; we just won't be able to have much fun.

Well we have 6 months unemployment. Hopefully it only lasts a month or whatever. New Jersey shutting down tonight at 9pm only essential workers will be allowed to work. I’m not essential wife is. I’m guessing I will have to send my employer a check for health, vision, and dental insurance.

UODATE

I will be working. In New Jersey the shutdown order doesn’t apply to manufacturing.

I am not trying to be negative but I see a lot of people saying they have transitioned to working from home. That is only part of it. The most important part of working from home is not being able to set up a desk and a computer and work from home. That is the easy part.

The issues comes on down the line when revenues are down because less product is being made, orders being fulfilled or services required. Less volume requires fewer people whether you can successfully work from home or not.

Granted different types of economic downturns impact different industries differently and I get that.

Yes, I don’t think people are really thinking about how everything is connected.

I work from home and it’s healthcare, so people seem to think that’s guaranteed security. But, depending on how long this goes on our company may not be able to survive financially.

Yes, hospitals might be overwhelmed and need extra nursing staff if they are hit with tons of patients. But in the meantime basically every is shut down. Doctors offices, dentists, surgery centers, etc. There’s only so long they can pay staff without seeing any patients (and making zero income). I know lots of dental hygienists and nurses who have already filed for unemployment because their offices will be closed for weeks if not longer.

My husband is actually the project manager for the Covid-19 task force at a very large hospital. They are having to send tons of staff home (either with PTO or without pay) because they are not doing any elective procedures. They will likely have to fire people due to the economic impact.

DH works for a software company that deals with counties. Thankfully the software is essential, so he is still employed. He transitioned to working from home about a year ago, so no real change. I teach one class at a dance studio, but it is closed down for now.

Yup. I work in healthcare for a major hospital. I schedule elective surgeries and work in the admin office. Right now I’m ok since there’s other things to do for our docs but if this goes on too long I expect to be furloughed or layed off. They are already cutting hours in some outpatient offices.

My SO works for a health insurance company. He’s considered life sustaining but will the company go under ?? We never know.

Feeling cautiously optimistic...I work for a software company. Our largest three clients are Fortune 500 companies who sell household essentials - so they should pull through. Many of our smaller clients are apparel retailers. I don't feel optimistic about them. Assuming our top 3 pull through, the business should be okay. I've been working from home for two weeks already. Though I miss working together with my colleagues, all our jobs can be done successfully from home.

Work in banking and if I last past June will be amazed.
I’m curious on your reasonings. Is it because of going to lobbies being closed? DH and I were just talking about our families jobs. One is the branch manager on a very small regional banks branch. We were thinking she’s very safe, with the amount of loans people may need or just refinancing mortgage for lower rate. But her job is also doing loans for that branch.

As for DH & I, I work in a government position that is essential (but working from home). DH works for utilities and been direct they have to stay working.
