Positives that can come out of all of this...

It'll be interesting to see how education pans out after this.

Between colleges and some private and public schools turning to remote learning, what will we learn and be able to use? Will children in poorer areas be able to use distance learning to keep up with other students who are at their ability to learn? That would certainly level the playing field if they could go into school and be put into a classroom where they learn at their own pace, or kids who need to stay home because they are ill, but not so ill that they can't learn are able to attend classes online.

This could wind up being a good thing to kickstart talks about improving education in America.

Maybe the US will get more of it's manufacturing industry back in this country. We can't be dependent on other hostile countries or non-hostile countries for most of our goods. I remember when the manufacturing industry was huge here in the US, before it all got shipped out to the lowest bidder. That would be a win for all of us; more jobs, home made and distributed goods, less dependence on other countries.

It's a chance for busy Mom's and Dad's to spend time with their kids. In this modern work world, it must be difficult to just do what you have to do to get by daily. My daughterinlaw is teaching the kids to cook; they are reading books, playing board games, helping with daily chores.
I have vowed to myself to become (even more) fanatical about not purchasing foreign made goods. I’m a label-reader and even with Canada’s woefully lax labeling requirements, have become increasingly alarmed at how this has trended, especially over the past few years. And I’m not just talking about electronics and budget-priced apparel.

It’s shocking to think that we, as a country rich in abundant natural resources of every kind, ship most of our wholesome agricultural products to Asia. It is then processed there, under questionable conditions, and sold back to us in boxes and cans. :crazy2: Meanwhile, our own economy becomes more and more knowledge-based, with no production plants or factory jobs for blue-collars to earn decent livings. It’s enough already.

I haven’t read or heard the statement “clapped back” in days, weeks maybe. People seem to have better priorities

I think we’ve finally kicked our bad habit of eating out.

We’re a lot more focused on healthy eating.

I think we appreciate each other more.

For me the biggest positives are an opportunity to grow closer to God, be still-er and truly know He is with me always. It is also a Blessing through my church to be part of our Relief Effort to help seniors especially. I also am so Blessed to be able to spend more time with my Dad and that of course we both are healthy. I do pray that more folks will use this time to grow in their faith.

It is a wonderful time to be in touch with more friends. I am hoping that part of my church's relief effort will include snail mail cards to both elderly and anyone. So important that as a church family we stay connected.

It has touched me so much to see kindness in action and people being considerate. I was at Ralph's this morning where I had to wait about 10 minutes in line outside as they are only allowing 25 people into the store at a time all the while disinfecting. The store manager was outside doing a great job of maintaining calm and assuring folks they are doing their best to restock. I thank all of you again for keeping this thread going!

It's also been lovely to get more rest which is so important! I've been enjoying re-reading some kids series books I have kept all these years such as Baby-sitters club and Boxcar children. Not always the best of stories but like tuning into a favorite cartoon or TV show can be relaxing indeed.

ETA a Disneyland note, I have always kept in prayer and hope that one day the Candlelight Processional would be expanded out here the way it is at WDW or at least be offered a few weeknights. Perhaps this will be a positive to come from all this as well, I can keep it in good hope anyway :)

Friday hug to all :)

Interesting - I hadn’t thought of that! I’ve been wanting to start using retinol for cosmetic purposes for a long while but the idea of the “purge stage” has deterred me. This might be just the time.

:flower3: I wish you well with your treatment.

Yes, if you want to try this out, now is definitely the best time to do it. I started using retinol (ProactivMD) a few years ago for my adult acne and the purge period was horrific. I felt and looked like an absolute MONSTER but still had to go out into the world. :(

For me, its the rise of use of new technology and the creativity of that use by people who up until now were reluctant to use or had no interest in new technology.
  • my mum and aunts (all over 65) using video chat in a WhatsAP group
  • more people using online grocery shopping
  • company's adopting working from home policies on a large scale
  • Restaurants and food places changing to collection or delivery only and using video chat to communicate with customers
  • Home schooling and virtual classrooms
  • musicians, singers, and other performers streaming performances and concerts online
This is the true dawn of the digital and online age, and those industries and companies which embrace, adapt and change are the ones who will weather this storm.

 Thanks! I guess that’s one way to ensure proper social distancing. You don’t need to actually have the plague to look like you do. Serious question: Do you think the retinol worked? I don’t have acne but I want to improve my texture and get rid of a little sun damage.

Hmm...well considering I only used it due to my acne problem, and it was at prescription strength, I guess I can only offer perspective on that. In my case it ended up making my acne about ten times worse, not to mention the overall redness and flaky irritation that happens as your skin tries to get used to the retinoid. It hit its peak about a month or two after starting treatment but still remained horrible for several months...I kept fighting through it because that's what it said to do, but after it finally settled down (almost a year later) my acne ended up going back to where it was before I even started the stuff and just stayed that way. So basically I went through all of that for nothing. :(

BUT...that's not to say it would be that way for everyone, that was just my personal experience. I know there are plenty of people who have had success with it, which is why it is used as a treatment, I just wasn't one of them. If you don't have an acne problem then I would imagine that you'd only have to worry about the redness and dry skin during your "purge", which in my case that part only lasted about a month. If you were using just an over the counter retinol and not prescription strength it would probably be a lot more gentle.

Now as far as overall skin appearance, I don't know, I guess it helped a little? Overall I suppose my skin might be a little bit smoother. I also have some sun damage and dark spots but I never really noticed any improvement with that.

I was thinking just this morning that this might push the biggest companies that are holding out to finally accept contactless/mobile pay and that someone might come up with gesture based screens rather than touchscreens.

Exactly

I go to Web Summit in Lisbon Portugal every November, the biggest tech and internet conference in the world. In November 2019, I saw some amazing ideas and startups, tech entrepreneurs and big tech companies all show casing their latest ideas. The talks I went to and the demonstrations I saw are just astounding, the creativity and advances in tech in all industries would blow your mind. The companies and tech entrepreneurs at the web summit are now the people who are keeping all our countries functioning in this worldwide health crisis.

And its the sole traders, the mom and pop stores, the big corporations who embrace the new world of tech and online connectivity who will still be around this time next year.

For me it’s getting to realize how our overscheduled lives make me feel. The real upside of this is that the whole “mental load” had been removed as far as tracking where my kids need to be, what activities I have, family planning. I’m hoping after this to be a lot more mindful about adding things back in.

I am SUPER jealous of everyone with clean houses. Im normally a great housekeeper, but between trying to work with 2 kids and my husband in the house, the toddlers toys, cooking at least 2 meals a day, everyone spreading out and being in all the different rooms, and not getting any time when everyone is gone to ”reset”, my house looks a disaster. Thank god no one is going to pop in on me.

- people wash their hands more
- the handshake dies
- families spend time together and actually interact
- parents stop their kid in line in front of you at EE from licking the handrail
- people finally clean their basement/garage/closet

Biggest positive the has come out of this is people seem a little kinder and more human lately. I feel like we (as a country/community) have been so divided over the past few years. These past two weeks I have noticed a lot more helping and supporting one another.....& a focus on what is most important.
