The Running Thread - 2019

August:

Total Miles: 322 --I was going to do a 2nd run today since I had limited time this morning and only got 6 , but nope. I am good with 322.

Average Pace: 8:03/mile. Still working on speed and pace. It hasn't been easy.

This is my highest month in almost a year---I hit 314 last September.

What did you do? I am very sensitive to ankle injuries now. I had actually been wondering how you have been doing as it has been a struggle for me this year.
I was doing exactly what it sounds like you are not doing. I started getting antsy and started really pushing mileage too fast. My bad ankle began to swell horribly. No new surgery but I had to back way off and it was back to PT. I am being smarter now, trying to be anyway. I have little to no pain but do get some swelling. My PT feels that it is fully healed but I need to pay attention to form when I am running. When I run more my form goes to hell and that stresses the ankle. Patience he says. My response, ok, but I do have Dopey to get ready for!

ATTQOTD: I’m not sure anything can beat running through Magic Kingdom for me. I’d pick running through MK at night during Christmastime (love the lights) with Walt Disney- I’d love to just listen to him for as long as possible!

August:
Run: 42 miles
Walk: 41 miles

I got a 4 mile run in yesterday, my longest since June which mentally felt really good. I have ~15 weeks left of pregnancy, so here’s hoping that I can keep running & walking for as long as possible.

Hope everyone is the path of Dorian is prepared and stays safe!

Hoping the hurricane stays out to sea. Stay safe everyone.

August totals
Running: 161. 39 miles
Avg. Pace 9:57
Elevation: 3699 ft
Total Runs: 24

YTD Miles: 872

Pretty good totals for me considering I missed back to back weekends with college move in day and a hiking trip to Colorado.
Looking forward to the days when combined T & D will be less than 140!

Another solid month for me, best of the year.

Distance 165km (103 miles)
Pace 5:27km (8:46mi)
Elevation 2655m (8710ft)

Part of my motivation is to run as many streets of Auckland as I can. I'll see if I can get a picture of my progress, the suburb I have been running recently has taken over 100km (and still about 10 to go) as well as 1600m of elevation...

Also, I have entered the Auckland half marathon on October 27th, only 11 days after I get back from our 3 week US holiday, so I will be well underprepared!

Another good month! Because of skin cancer surgery I missed a few runs and had to cut one short. Strength training is going well and I'm seeing gains in the gym.

I must have missed the "skin cancer surgery" post. I hope it was successful and they removed all malignancy.

My August totals are 108 miles, all run reasonably easy (anywhere between 9:45 and 10:30 depending on T+D). Somewhere in the next few weeks I start my @DopeyBadger training plan for the WDW marathon which I have yet to sign up for.

Thanks! They got all!

I have a question for ASICS Nimbus users: After how many miles do you retire them? And how close to an event do you introduce new ones in your rotation?

I have nicknames for my ASICS Nimbus 19.
I retired my first pair, Maleficient, at 672km (418 miles) and am on the fence about retiring Beach at 654km (406 miles) and Onyx at 586km (364 miles). I keep my White Blues for winter 500km (310 miles) and will use my Volt 298km (185 miles) for my first Marathon in three weeks. Am I wasteful retiring my shoes in the 400 miles range? And I want to have enough in rotation come January to run Dopey so I will probably introduce Anna this morning.
I have been in the 19’s for about a year and a half. I usually shoot for about 500-600 before retiring but the last pair I retired had 710 miles on them. If they are still in good shape and feel good, I keep wearing them. The pair I am about to retire only has 483 miles and they look worse than the pair with 710. No idea why. I bought these 2 pairs together and they are exactly the same - same color, same make location, etc. I have noticed that not all of the Nimbus 19’s I have bought are exactly the same. But these 2 were.

August Training Summary

Running duration = 16:02 hours
Running mileage = 113 miles
Average Pace = 8:31 min/mile (about 20% slower than estimated LT pace)
Average HR = 138 (70.6% HRR)
Indoor Cycling duration = 34:50 hours (PR)
Indoor Cycling mileage = 566.1 miles (PR)
Indoor Cycling average power = 174 watts (73% FTP)
Indoor Cycling average Normalized Power = 190 watts (79% FTP)
80 Day Obsession = 11:12 hours
Total Training Time = 62:05 hours

August was a great month and another good step forward. The glute issues have completely resolved thanks to the PT exercises. We went through a treadmill test just the other week and outside of some very small corrections the PT thought I had near perfect form (under the conditions of the test). So the PT had no recommendations for changes and that continuing the strength training over the course of the next several years will be beneficial in the long term. I've pushed my max bike ride up to 4:15 hours followed by a 40 min evening run and then the next day was a 2:10 hour run followed by a 45 min strength session. The T+D has been steadily decreasing and fall is coming. But even outside of the T+D adjustments I can tell the fitness is increasing and putting me in a position to succeed. I'm not in sub-3 shape, but I'm getting closer with each week of training. The indoor cycling duration and mileage were PRs by a wide margin. The total training time is pretty much even with my PR. But that's going to be obliterated in the next few months. Just have to continue to stay healthy and put in good training. Finally get to race again in September and am eager to see what happens!

August 2019 totals
Distance: 117km (73 miles)
Average pace: 6’25”/km (10min20s/mile)
Nb run: 13

While this is not the volume I was planning for the month preceding my first full marathon, I am surprisingly very comfortable with it. I got good long runs in July before we left for vacation on August 3rd, succeeded in fitting some 10k+ training run while in California, walked 75km and 95km per week visiting, resumed the normal training plan and got everyone ready for back to school/work/fall activities. And, to test all this, today, September 1st, was my longest long run ever: 30km. It went well, despite less than ideal food/sleep conditions the night before, and I feel confident for the full!

I forgot to answer my own QOTD. The question came about as I have a work meeting in Japan this fall and the kids asked me if I was going to Tokyo Disney, DH asked if I was running a race, neither of which was on the docket, but we discussed. DH requested I run TD Sea and push Duffy into a lake. Twin A asked if we could go to Aulani to run with Stitch and Twin B asked for Marie in Paris. I was stumped but thought globally Shanghai with Mulan and Mushu would be fun, and otherwise I want an evening run throughMK & Epcot with Vanellope, Shank, and the comfy princesses or DCA with Captain Marvel.

Shoes: 400 miles would be fantastic. January Blues (bought in January, dark blue, sad I had to switch models) are just about at 300 and need to be retired. I can tell a large difference in mine after about 275.

August Miles are the lowest and slowest since I started keeping track
32 miles
12:48 mm/mile
I did get in a week on Lake Michigan, a short trip to SWGE, and a week of solo parenting, so I expected it to be low, just not slow. September brings a new kind of back to school chaos, and work trips allowing me to run in Long Island (probably on the treadmill as the neighborhood was not awesome) and in TX where I am hoping not to melt. I am looking forward to seeing how it will go!

Race Recap Big Peach Sizzler 5k
Goal under 24 minutes (PR was 23:46) did not need to PR but really wanted to be under 24 as that would put my fitness about the same place I started for Chicago Marathon training. I did do a few speed workouts, but was not in a training cycle for a 5k.

This race is my time trial to give to @DopeyBadger for my next training plan. I decided on this race for two reasons, one there is also a 10k and most people tend to run the 10k. I knew the 5k would be a smaller crowd and in my heart was hoping I could age group place since more people would be doing the 10k. I also wanted to use this for a PRR qualifier. Second reason for this race is it started at 7 am and I could take Marta to the start and home at the finish. Very convenient.

Marta was a little late but got to the start at 6:40 and did a warm up. Then I tucked in pretty close behind the start line. Gun went off and so did I. I have my watch set for .5 mile intervals so I wanted to be at 3:50s at least. Not surprised the first half was fast 3:41 and I knew I could not hold that. The race was fairly straight two left turns right away and then 2.5 miles down Peachtree and another left. My splits got slower but I was pleased with the next few 3:47, 3:49, 3:48. I was happy with that as usual I struggled from 2 to 2.5, 3:52, but now just over half a mile. Last split was 3:43. I finished in 23:39. Not only did I hit the goal of under 24, I did manage a PR by 7 seconds. I was quite pleased.

Next I went to the results board to confirm finish time and see if I age group placed. I saw the scrolling at female 25 to 29, so I had a little time to wait. Finally female 45 to 49, there was one name on the list so far and the time was 25 something and it was not my name. I got a little excited. I need to let this whole thing scroll. I needed to see overall female masters list. Yay! I was second. I did even better than an age group podium. I got 2nd.

Hopefully these pics load. I really wanted one with Mallory but the sun was not cooperating. I am posting it anyways and a good one one the finisher’s medal and award.

Obviously still issues with pics loading from ipad.

I'm sure this question has been asked a million times already but what phone apps do you interval runners use to time your run/walk intervals? My very run-phobic younger DS suggested that he might be willing to try very short run intervals on one of our daily walks. I'm desperate to get him moving more.

App related: Anybody use the Sweatcoin app? I'm kind of a tinfoil hat wearer and am constantly on edge about phone privacy, which may be a hopeless cause by now. Is Sweatcoin just a way to spy on you? Is it actually a Very Good Thing? Anybody know?

I haven’t tried sweatcoin but RunArnoRun has a video review of it on YouTube. I think he’s been using it about a year. If your considering it, it’s probably worth checking that out.

I don’t use it but my brother in law uses some of the zombie running apps to gamify his running.
