The Running Thread - 2019

58 degrees this morning, perfect to end August with a 12 mile run.

Totals for the month:
78 miles
13 hrs 19 min
Avg pace 10’18”

Mostly long relaxed runs with short interval runs once a week, now it’s time to start ramping it up a little until W&D and then a lot more to get to Dopey. I’ve modified the Galloway plan to have a long run every other weekend instead of every third as well as keep my interval runs on Tuesday and still have a two week taper before each challenge. I know that I can hit my target of a 9:00/m half at W&D and a 10:00/m full at Dopey. If it gets to be too much I’ll dial back the pace instead of the miles
🤞

Pretty pleased with my running this month, I did a few 10k distances which helped me hit my target of 100 km/month with many days to spare!

Totals for August:
138.6 km (86.6 miles) ran, at an average pace of 6:42/km, or 10:43/mile.
Also walked another 125.7 km (78.6 miles) as exercise!

Signed myself up for an 18.45km race at the end of September, which should be good training for Wine and Dine half. I'm still a bit skeptical of my ability to run distances longer than 10km, but I guess that's what the next 2 months before Wine and Dine is for...

Finished this months of running up with a 16 miler. The temp here has dropped a little bit so this week was noticeably easier than last week.

One of my running buddies pushes his almost 1 year old in a stroller with us on our long runs. When the run is finished we get a text in the format of a frontier style missive from the baby summarizing the day's run. It's the best part of the run.

Total monthly milage 122 miles
avg pace 9:27

I have a question for ASICS Nimbus users: After how many miles do you retire them? And how close to an event do you introduce new ones in your rotation?

Not an ASICS user; my answer is based on Brooks Ghost, which seems a similar shoe.

I try to retire them between about 330-380 miles. I've gone as far as 470 miles. I want them to still have some life left as I use them as knock-around shoes. I see it as a sliding scale between body resilience and finances. In my younger days (resilience > finances), I'd go 500-600 miles in a pair of shoes, only retiring them when I started to notice various aches and pains. Now (finances > resilience), I retire them sooner. I'm guessing weight also comes into play with heavier runners needing to retire shoes sooner.

For a half marathon or longer, I want my shoes to be between 60-100 miles. Fresh, but broken in enough to know that I don't have any issues with them.

I only have 1 pair in rotation. For me it was too complicated even keeping up with 2 pair.

As far as names, I've never done that. If I did it would be Stinky Pete I, Stinky Pete II...

August Totals:

Running: 140 miles
Average Pace: 9:34
Total Elevation Gain: 11,253 ft
Steps: 532,061

Most miles year-to-date, not what it's been in previous years, but I'm not training for anything. Pace is a little slower than last month, but not enough to worry about. Average cadence looks good for me.

A good month and we seem to be over the hump on heat (still hot, but not extreme), so I'm looking forward to a good September.

I have a question for ASICS Nimbus users: After how many miles do you retire them? And how close to an event do you introduce new ones in your rotation?

I have nicknames for my ASICS Nimbus 19.
I retired my first pair, Maleficient, at 672km (418 miles) and am on the fence about retiring Beach at 654km (406 miles) and Onyx at 586km (364 miles). I keep my White Blues for winter 500km (310 miles) and will use my Volt 298km (185 miles) for my first Marathon in three weeks. Am I wasteful retiring my shoes in the 400 miles range? And I want to have enough in rotation come January to run Dopey so I will probably introduce Anna this morning.
Wow I really am like the Princess and the Pea with my shoes! I can never get more than 250 -300 miles out of my Nimbus and I’ve been that way for years. So I don’t think you are wasteful at 400 that’s for sure.
ASICS Nimbus used to be my one and only shoe, and I was cycling through so quickly. I tried the Brooks Ghost 8 a few years ago and couldn’t believe the mileage I got out of them! 400 or more which is a lot for me. Now I’m back to the Nimbus and I swear at like 150 miles I’m already feeling like they are flat. All of that to say that to me 400 miles is not wasteful.

August Totals:
Total Miles - 137.33 mi
Total Time - 20:33:54
Average Pace - 8.59/mi
Avg HR - 145

I am sick of the heat and humidity! This month has been brutal in Houston. I don't remember being able to wring my socks out after a six mile run, but had that earlier this week.

Overall a decent month with the miles starting to ramp up a little bit for my races in Oct.

August Training Summary
Total Miles: 92.5 miles
Total Time: 14:40:16
Average Pace: 9:31/mi
Average HR: 139/min

Great month: finished a 5k training plan, vacationed in San Fran for a week (ran four times), and started a half marathon training plan. Didn't miss any scheduled workouts.

I’m an ASICS Kayano runner. I usually get 400-450 miles per pair, but stopped at about 350 miles with model 23 because of a tight toe box, and I have gone as far as 500 miles on a pair that I used for some trail running after I had officially retired them from road running. Your mileage sounds about right for me!

August totals
Miles- 105.56
Time- 20.56 hours
Pace- 11:47

A little less than last month, but 6 seconds per mile faster🤣. Last week we were in the car 32 hours traveling to Destin, then to Memphis, back to Destin, and finally, back home. Sitting is NOT conducive to health! But we’ve had cooler mornings this week, so it’s time to ramp up the long run mileage.

Atlanta 10 miler and W&D races, I’m coming for you!

August running:
Total miles: 52:09
Average pace: 12:03

This is my lowest mileage month maybe in years, due to a long vacation in which I didn't run at all. Also my slowest average pace month in about 10 months. Hopefully I'll feel nice and rested and refreshed and ready to start Goofy training.

August Training Summary
Total Miles: 106.88 miles
Total Time: 18:47:54
Average Pace: 10:32/mi
Average HR: 150/min

This month’s mileage is a bit lower than last month’s due to a combination of starting a new plan and skipping a couple of runs. I had some heavy legs just before starting the new plan, so I skipped a run to ensure I was fresh heading into the increased pacing. Then I was having some heel pain and took a couple of runs off this week to rest, ice and hopefully nip it in the bud.

On a positive note, the faster pacing is coming pretty naturally and my average HR this month is the same as it was last month when I was running about 0:20/mile slower. I’m sure the hotter temps played into that some, but it’s a promising sign that hopefully will continue. September should be a big month. Here’s hoping that Dorian doesn’t impact my runs late next week, too!

Running 26.1 miles. Hard to believe I'll eclipse that in a single morning next January.
Swimming 2450 yards.

MRI: one. Or should I say: part of one. The ear plugs were too loose, and they put the headphones on with the band under my chin instead of over my head. Anybody else have that happen? I tapped out < half-way through. I could not take that volume of sound any longer.
Ortho MD visits: one. Today. MRI wasn't enough of a scan to show anything. Wants to see what PT does for me. That begins 0715 tomorrow. Given ok to run and swim, as they're not hurting my quad. Standing for long periods causes the worst issue right now. The next time I flex my leg back after that: I feel it.

My August goals: double miles run. Achieve pain-free status. Avoid another MRI. Run with @DopeyBadger when in Wisconsin late August. Request Goofy training plan.

August totals
Running: 74.6 miles! I almost tripled my July total!
swimming: 2350 yards
PT sessions: 5
MRI: none

August goals:
increased miles as above
I was about 90-95% back, but a week of business travel has set me back into the 80's. PT yesterday.
Run with @DopeyBadger Yes! An enjoyable run last Sunday. Also got to meet Steff and G!
Goofy plan requested, received, and started. Not quite sure I can achieve the paces just yet, but today's 7 mile run was my fastest in over a month.

August 2019
running: 67.9 mi
-average pace: 11:49
-total time: 13.38 hours
tennis: 7 hours

I had a lot of travel in the first two weeks of the month, which cut back both the running and tennis. I started my marathon training plan about halfway through the month, so the mileage should be ramping up next month!

Fall tennis leagues don't start until around the equinox, so tennis play will probably continue to be hit-or-miss until then.

August: 2 miles
Positives: Started PT on Monday and Wednesday he cleared me to start walking, only for 15 minutes and only at a normal walking pace but I am moving again. Approved to walk the 5k I am registered for on September 8th, provided I take it at walking pace, listen to my body and slow down if needed.

It is nice to know that I am not alone with having to start from the very beginning again with training. While we are all starting again for various reasons, those of you that have talked about your reasons, struggles, set backs and/or challenges have helped me feel not so alone. Thank you.
