Hurricane Dorian / WDW Theme Parks Discussion

Correction, people who live in FLORIDA don't evacuate for hurricanes.

Yes they do .... if you live on a barrier or close to coast there is usually a mandatory evacuation. If you refuse you are without any emergency assistance and sometimes the islands stay closed for days without utilities. Our complex began hurricane prep today .. removing all furniture from pool areas, then they will start making sure all units outdoor decor and furniture get moved inside.

Had friends in S FL and they evacuated every time .... to Disney World since they handle it so well and the impact is weakened.

Connect to this thread ... DISNEY Resorts handle hurricanes very well and if I were staying there during one I would not be worried for one minute. The only suggestion is if you are at moderate or value during "curfew" you can't leave your room so be sure to fill up the fridge with drinks and snacks. And make sure you charge all your devices and battery packs. If you lose power, no television and no leaving room = not much to do.

My family and I were evacuated from Caribbean Beach one year and spent the night in The Yacht Club Convention Center due to a hurricane.

Debating moving my arrival up a day to Sunday instead of Monday if I can, which--as far as I can tell--would definitely put me in the area ahead of the hurricane. Hunkering down at the Dolphin sounds sort of fun...

I’m keeping my eye on the trackers I live in south Florida. They are saying tomorrow night will be a more accurate idea of where the storm is heading, it’s still a bit too far out to know for sure what it’ll do yet. It’s not good how it’s slowed down and missed all the land so it’s just going to keep getting stronger. I feel bad for everyone coming here for Labor Day weekend.

So I am wondering....how many are coming in and weathering the storm and how many are cancelling and coming after? Cant decide best course of action.

You are smarter to push to after. More likely to have flights canceled in advance of the storm.

We’re coming. We arrive early Friday. We were supposed to go home late Tuesday but I extended to late Wednesday, just in case. We plan on cramming in as much as we can Fri-Sun, planning on parks being closed Monday (maybe part of Tuesday?) and doing what we missed Tuesday night (if possible) and Wednesday.

Not true. We live on Marco Island and evacuated for Irma. The island was told to evacuate. Irma made landfall on Marco Island.

Is Disney understanding with moving tickets and/or ticketed events around due to weather issues?

Depends on what exactly you’re moving and the circumstances, but reports are generally positive when it comes to moving or modifying things like tickets.

I'm a non-flyer (Amtrak or bust) so I'm not sure if before or after is better. After sounds safer though!
You’re always safer not in the path of a hurricane. Disney’s safe, another state is safer. Another factor would be how fast this thing is supposed to move through. I’m a native Floridian. Riding it out for 6-8 hours is actually sort of interesting, but when they linger, it’s totally miserable.

So will they give refunds for both Monday’s MNSSHP and the fireworks dessert party if they are cancelled automatically or do you have to fight for it?

I can’t imagine you would have to fight for a refund if the party is cancelled.

We cut our trip short due to Irma, and they refunded us for the party we were going to miss (the party was a few days before the storm and was not cancelled.) They refunded us for the party, no questions asked. I know people have different experiences, but when we left early, they refunded us for our leftover days on our tickets, the party we missed, etc. Every CM we ran into was so understanding.

Another reason after can be better is that effects of the storm can be assessed - sometimes power outages, transportation delays, gas and supply shortages and other post-storm problems linger, and you can cancel your trip rather than be stuck enduring the difficulties until you can get out.

I'll have an interesting case in trying to get a refund potentially. I bought a ticket for a buddy of mine that live in the FL panhandle. The plan is we're gonna go Thurs 9/5 (he's driving down Wednesday), the storm will be way out of Orlando by then. But, if the some of the models are true and it gets in the gulf and hits FL panhandle, then he is stuck there and we;ll have to cancel. Would be interesting to see if they would give me a refund for that.

I have been convinced by this thread to be safer rather than sorrier, and not rush down to Lake Buena Vista just to hang at the bar at Shula's for (potentially) days.
