It may be a more global thing. That's where the film made a lot more of it's money proportionally.
Avatar was indeed immensely popular outside of the US. I think the biggest issue though is that there was never any more to keep the property on people's minds. They have taken a long time with the sequels, and Pandora at AK was the first thing to come up to reinvigorate the brand. I don't think it'll be too much of an issue for them though. The marketing will likely be insane, and with the the tie-in to the park now, I think they'll do just fine. The world wants Avatar sequels, it just wants them in 2011!
