Oh, I'm also going through all of my PEZ dispensers and seeing how much I can sell them for. I'm thinking about just selling them as a set on Ebay. I found a website called Pez Collectors that tells you how much your PEZ is worth. I used to collect these as a kid, but now they just take up space and are a pain to dust around. I should make a decent amount of $ by selling them.

Wow, thanks for the warm welcome! And thanks for the DISchurners invite!

DH has sold on eBay in the past but hasn't done so in, oh maybe 5 years? Otherwise no side gigs of any stripe. Uh, if needed in order to qualify for a business card I could probably get him to sell a few items here or there.

We're happy to open and use as many cards as needed for any sign up bonus. For example, get/use CC1 for 3 months to get bonus X, then stop using CC1 and get/use CC2 for four months to get bonus Y, stop using CC2 and get/use CC3 for 2 months for bonus Z. More than happy to go this route, and could manage even attempting to do two CCs at the same time as long as we'd have a good chance at making the minimum spend for the bonus.

What we are less looking to do is using multiple cards on a daily basis for different categories. For example, CC1 for gas (except for BP stations where we use CC2) and CC3 is for restaurants (except Starbucks where we use CC4) and CC5 is grocery stores except Target because we use CC6 and so on. That sort of thing DH would never get on board with and honestly I'd also find to be too taxing.

My 4 year old loves LEGOland! We have gotten great deals on APs the past two years. In 2017 we did their Black Friday deal for $99 APs and then this past September they had a one day deal where they were $75 to promote the just announced LEGO Movie land. We have already gotten a ton of value out of them and we've only been one time. We got to see an advance screening of the LEGO Movie 2 for free and ended up winning a raffle at the screening and getting a ton of movie and park related sets. Can't wait to check out their water park in the Spring.

I’m hoping some of you are willing to help a newbie in the churning game. I’m a long time DISer (first joined in ’03 under a different name) but I haven’t been around in a while, other than briefly posting again last year on some of the trip boards prior to our 2018 WDW vacation.

I’m looking for suggestions on the best cards to get/use to reach our goals for future travel. My main interest is to churn to get the big sign up bonuses, with less interest in using certain cards for certain categories for 2x or 3x points (use credit card A for groceries and B for gas, and C for restaurants). I’d much rather put all our purchases on one or maybe two cards at any given time. I don’t want to make it too complex because I just don’t have the mental energy to keep it all straight, and my DH even less so. I realize we might be leaving points on the table this way, but that’s ok – simplicity trumps optimization for us.

I don’t have the time to read the whole thread (although I will be going back as time permits), but I did read the sticky. So here goes!

Family info: Family of 3 – Me, DH and DD7 – we’re the only ones traveling.

Travel Goals: Two future Disney trips

Trip 1: DLR June of 2020. Plan to pay cash for airfare (1st class if I can find a good deal but economy otherwise – will fly either AA or UA) but use Marriott points for Courtyard Inn Anaheim (50k points per night for 8 nights, 1 night free so 350k points – which I pretty much have on hand already). Because I already have the hotel points and plan to pay cash for the flights, my main concern is with trip 2, however if anyone suggests changing up how we approach trip 1 in order to assist with trip 2, I’m all ears.

Trip 2: WDW May of 2022. Original plan was to use airline miles for flights (economy) and Marriott points for Swan/Dolphin for 10 nights (50k points per night, 2 nights free so 400k points). THAT SAID – also open to cash back/travel statement redemption credit cards (or any other strategy you might suggest) to cover cost of ANY on-property Disney moderate/deluxe or villa – open to renting points for DVC (actually really interested in this idea since it’s such a long trip – although I have no experience in renting points so yet another thing I’ll be researching!). Zero interest in staying off property, and strong preference NOT to change resorts mid-stay, although would consider one resort hop if necessary.

Important Note: With the Marriott merger with Starwood being so new, one big concern I have is, assuming I manage to earn the 400k points needed for a 10 night Swan/Dolphin stay, that I might not be able to actually get 10 nights. Starwood’s old rule was as long as a single hotel room was available for sale, you could use points to reserve it. I have no idea how Marriott’s program works in practice, or how it may work 3 years from now (and even under Starwood, 10 nights might have been a tall order at Swan/Dolphin). So my fear is that I’ll be sitting on 400k of points that I can’t actually use, when I could have been earning cash back or other useable rewards another way all along. It’s the big reason I’m thinking of just going to straight up cash back rewards and/or travel statement redemptions, no worries about blackout dates or other restrictions. I just book the lowest rate I can find and use my cash back/travel redemptions to cover the cost. I’m not quite as worried about the DLR stay as I can book that as soon as July of ’19 before they can mess with the program too much (plus the BonVoy points I need for the DLR trip have already been earned in any case so too late now!).

Home Airport is O’Hare. As I mentioned the plan is to pay cash for flights for Trip 1 and miles/points for flights for Trip 2. Really only want non-stop flights so we’re looking at UA or AA.

Credit Scores – high 700’s/low 800’s for both of us. No plans for needing loans anytime in the near future so no fear of churning negatively affecting our scores/ability to get credit. I mean I hope it doesn’t but we won’t be affected if it did.

Average monthly credit card spend (last 24 months) $3860

We don’t own a business so I don’t think we qualify for any of the business cards, unless there is something about them I’m not aware of where non-business owners can get them?

Current open cards in both our names:
  • 8/14? Chase Slate - could be longer. Haven’t used it in ages but too lazy to close it since it has no annual fee – happy to close it.
  • 4/16 Chase Freedom - don’t currently use it, just too lazy to close it since it has no annual fee – happy to close it.
  • 8/18 Chase United Airlines, earned 65k mileage bonus. Hope to keep open until mid-June ‘19 to get free checked bags for upcoming trip but not a deal breaker if you suggest I need to close it sooner. After trip will close to avoid annual fee.
  • 8/11 AMEX Marriott BonVoy (formerly Starwood). Earned some sort of bonus back when we opened it. This is how I earned all of our past and current Starwood/Marriott points. With the Marriott merger my current AMEX really isn’t the best way to keep earning points I feel, but not sure if I should get the new AMEX BonVoy Brilliant (except holy heck that annual fee!) or go another route, plus again my fear of the future ability to redeem points with the BonVoy program.

In my name only 7/18 Blain’s Farm and Fleet – used to get a 10% off your current purchase (bought a riding lawn mower). Never use it so happy to close if needed

In DH’s name only – nothing new in the last 2 years

Current Reward Programs
  • Marriott BonVoy current point balance 339,981
  • United Airlines miles current balance 99 (not a typo, just booked 3 free tickets for summer 2019 travel a few days ago!)
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards is at about 1700 points I think, I don’t go out of my way to earn many and I cashed a bunch in a while back for some reason or another.
Other than vacations (which are mostly booked with points), we don’t travel so won’t earn hotel points or airline miles in that manner (with the exception of airline miles for Trip 1).

So that’s it! I figure getting an AA Citi Platinum card for the 60k sign up bonus would be in play for the 2022 WDW trip, but not sure how to proceed beyond that. THANK YOU in advance for any advice you can offer!!!

I know @Albort already mentioned SW, and I concur, I know you say Ohare, but Midway is a great SW hub and if you are able to travel a little more north Milwaukee also has some great non-stop flight options, the reason I bring up SW is because of the CP as well as the sign up bonuses you could definitely fly for almost free with these minus the 9/11 tax/fee. To earn a CP you would need to be willing to open a SW bus card.

I know @SouthFayetteFan brought up business cards, one of the most lucrative sign up bonus is CIP through Chase, I would highly consider that card as it could help with your goals.

My son is AU on my CSP. I know I can use my airlines rewards account to book his travel. But if I wanted to transfer points to his airline account (say SW for example) - can that be done?

Yes, I've done that - transferred URs from my account to DD's SW account when she was an AU on my CSP. If you only have the CSP then disregard the following: I did run into some problems back then because I had both the CSR (with DH as AU) and the CSP (with DD as AU) and you're not supposed to have more than one person in a household be an AU on a Sapphire account. But it all got worked out in the end.

Sounds like your “business” is going to expanding and in need of some new capital in the form of a Biz CC!! :rotfl2:

I know a few have recommended looking at the SW companion pass (CP). I am not recommending that specifically based on your travel plans. If you are planning to fly twice in the next 3 years, a SW CP will provide little value. Now, if in between those trips you’ll be flying often that would be a different story...

Having some SW points and flying out of Midway wouldn’t be a bad plan though. :) I just don’t know that you’ll get much value out of a CP.

I feel like I haven't posted on here in forever about actual credit card related topics. Dh and I are working on my Capital One MSR. We are about halfway there with 2 months left to hit it. I'm not worried at all. We plan to just cash out the points for cash to help offset our Japan rail pass tickets. I'm thinking after this card I might actually get myself a CSR. Dh has one, but I don't. I think I'm only at 1 personal card right now because the rest have all been business cards. Dh has like 2 or 3 personal cards. I'm too lazy to check my spreadsheet lol.

Dh and I deep cleaned our entire basement today which wasn't fun, but it felt SO GOOD when we were finished. I hate cleaning the basement because of the spiders and bugs we always find. We also went through all of our basement stuff to get rid of, send to Goodwill, or things to turn in at Game Stop.

By cash out do you mean getting a check back or statement credit? You would only get half the value compared to as a travel eraser. Your 50,000 SUB would only be worth $250.

I'm not sure if we are going to fly in 2021 or not, I don't have plans for travel that year beyond traveling to PA to seeing DH's mother for a few days (it's a 12 hour drive and if we have no other travel plans in conjunction to the visit, we'd likely drive). My current thinking is that we are taking a (somewhat) big vacation this year, a big one next year (DLR) and a big one in 2022 (WDW) so 2021 might be a lower key year. We do have savings goals other than travel so I don't want to stretch ourselves too thin.

At any rate, we are in the far northwest suburbs of Chicago, to put it bluntly trying to get to Midway is a royal pain in the rear. SWA is a fine airline but given the hassle of getting to MDW, in most cases I'd rather pay out of pocket to fly on UA/AA than fly on SWA for free. But thank you very much for the suggestion!

Yep - that makes sense. That’s why my brain put up a stop sign on the CP LOL! :)

Since folks are talking about 2021 travel... Celebrity Cruises is doing their $20 deposit sale right now. I thought the $50 deposit was good awhile back but obviously this one is better.

I have a DCL placeholder and I'm waiting for the Jan. 2021 sailings but there's no real downside to booking something on Celebrity for $20 too. My plan for the evening is to investigate their itineraries. Never sailed that line before.

I successfully hardboiled eggs in my new pressure cooker - the house did not explode! So I went to the store and got the ingredients for mushroom risotto. Meal planning on fleek.

Does anyone know if the prepaid rate for Marriott will trigger the $300 travel credit on the SPG Lux. Whatever it’s new ridiculous name is I forget and do not want to remember. :)

Thanks @Lain as always for your thoughts on getting DH the Biz Green. I did a screenshot of your response and am now contemplating. I can see it both ways for getting the Green or BBP. Realistically he is probably getting the pop up regardless so I probably need to think of it from that viewpoint.

I got the same error when I added my Target redcard account and then again several hours later when I tried my Amex account. Both my Chase accounts added fine. I'm hoping/guessing there is something up with their system today.
glad it isn't just me. Citi nor amex worked properly. Thx. Will try again tomorrow.

I was really hoping for an increased dosh payout for the holiday weekend. Been a big dud so far.
Walgreens in on pei for 1% though, so maybe could stack with CF 5x if you are like me and have oodles more to spend this quarter.

Yes I know its early but I will need to re-up my SW SP in 2020. I want to start planning now. We got it for DW at the beginning of 2018 and have had it for the full two years. Best method to do it in her name again with the Biz and a personal or should I switch to me? We will both be under 5/24 by then.
