Should I book it?!

So our dates are set at OKW for August 11-20! Just my daughter and I. Have not booked the flights yet...here is the story. Flying from Newark, NJ to Orlando round trip right now is priced at $447 pp, which is way high in my opinion. Last August flight was canceled due to weather, and long story short thanks to United, we lost 2 days of our vacation :worship:

So as compensation, we were credited $450 pp in a flight voucher, so we have to book something with those vouchers before August. Again will just be my daughter and I. Do I wait and see if prices go down? We always book spring break in the Caribbean so the remainder would not go to waste. Or would you just book it now? We are flying out on a Sunday (which we usually don’t do), and it’s August, so maybe they will remain high? Any input is appreciated! TIA!

Couple of clarifying questions first.

Are you sure your credits don't expire until August? And um, without knowing the backstoty, United didn't create the weather.

if your vouchers have to be redeemed by August but the use deadline is further out, I would wait. If you actually have to complete travel by August, wait.

Thanks for your input, do you work for United? This is why I said long story short—-I know United didn’t create weather.

No, no airline employment. Just clarification.
Airlines do not issue flight vouchers due to weather. There was wrong doing on their end, the initial flight cancelation was due to weather, events after that resulted in a total of $900 in flight vouchers. They were issued in August, so they give you a year to book something. Travel does not need to be completed by this August, but vouchers need to be redeemed. Sorry I didn’t clarify.

I would double-check the fine print. I don't know about United, but when I've received vouchers from American the voucher travel had to occur within one year of the original booking date...which really hurts if you book far in advance.

To your main question -- why would you NOT use the vouchers? Are you planning a different trip within the timeframe of the vouchers? It's a free trip, regardless of what the sticker price for the ticket is unless you have other travel plans besides WDW.

I’m 100% positive I need to only book a flight/flights before they expire...not travel. My question is not if I should use them or not, of coarse I’m going to use them. My question is, being that the fares are so high right now, to book it (won’t cost me anything) OR wait until the fares go down so I still have a balance left over to book another trip someplace else. I’m asking based on experiences of others kind of as a “what would you do” .

I would just book now, I look at it as a free flight and wouldn't worry about the price (as it would be $0), L like the peace of mind of not having to keep looking.

Agreed. What's the backup plan if fares go up instead.

At least wait until Tuesday to book, at the earliest. Flights usually go down mid week and up on weekends (if they change at all)

That’s what I’m waiting for! I just feel like that’s a lot round trip, even if I’m not paying for it. Then I’m wondering if it’s just too far out in advance and it will go down. Or maybe not, it will spike up?! This is why I’m torn! Lol :confused3

Well, I bought last Thursday when the price dropped, and today the price dropped even more about $33 per person.

Why I looked just to torture myself, I don't know. This is for July.

But, with my luck, if I didn't buy last Thursday, and decided to hold out, it would have gone up today.

I think we all keep looking to torture ourselves! Lol....buying airfare is such a gamble!!

I don't know with United, but Southwest hasn't opened their booking period for August yet. We usually travel in August, BOS/MCO, because airfare is usually cheaper then than in July. Notice I am saying "usually!" I would GUESS that if Southwest hasn't opened booking yet, that most airlines will offer fares but that the price is going to be pretty fluid for the next month or so. I agree, I think $447 is high for EWR/MCO. I think I'd watch it for another month or two before booking, hoping to save some of that money towards the next trip (if it's still going to be valid), but I can understand booking now, too, to have it locked in and know that it's a free trip! Good luck, either way it's a gamble.

Depending on the voucher type, you may forfeit any value that's left after the new tickets are issued. I would verify that before counting on having extra funds for a future ticket. I know I have had vouchers for them that work both ways in the past.

Part of me says, go for it, book the flights and use the voucher. But if it is one that has churning value then I would wait a few more weeks.
