Husband lost job...

Can you relocate? We are desperate for employees in Seattle. I have many positions paying $100k+ working for the City of Seattle that I can not fill. I am swamped and overwhelmed. I am going bat $hit crazy because we can't hire enough people to help me in the Transportation Department. We keep losing people Amazon who are paying even more and have 6,000 openings.

Do you have anything you could sell on eBay? Check your garage, closets, etc. for stuff you no longer need. If you have a thrift store near you, look for items that would be good for resale.
Thanks! Probably need to get rid of some non-used items anyways.

So, he's gonna get 6 months of unemployment while he looks, right?

If it were me, I'd probably be the one to take on the "extra" jobs so it wouldn't affect the unemployment pull and it would make sure my spouse could be 100% focused on landing his next job. I'd probably look to pick up some daycare or senior care jobs, especially since a bunch of holidays are coming. Also, I'd probably work the elections (around here, I think you get $175 for the day)...

I didn't look at it from that perspective. Yes, he should receive unemployment. I am definitely going to look into working the elections. Thanks!

Is he handy? Some will be getting home projects done before the holidays. Are you in an area that has the Next Door app? It's a good place to advertise services available. I have also seen people looking for employment get some good local leads.

Thank you! I just downloaded the app. He can offer some services..lawn, xmas lights, small projects...I love all the ideas!

Don't think that is really in our cards right now since we have one in college and another getting ready to go...both with instate tuition. Thanks for the suggestion though!

I can't believe all of the ideas that everyone was able to come up with. Tomorrow we will look over all of them and see what might work in our area. This gives me a little bit of hope during the meantime between jobs. I pray this lapse in employment is short-lived.

If he wants to put in the time, he could look into transcription sites. It's tedious, but it's an option if necessary.

What type of work has he done?

Check with your unemployment office, most will have job listings, let them know your looking for immediate (any job) not just those in your skill set.

His record is clean. Wonder if he would need a commercial driving license though..
He will need a CDL; many districts will train or pay for training, but it's a time commitment and takes a few weeks, at least. Will require a clean driving history and criminal history plus drug screening.

Idk how much money he was making but make sure you look at how much his unemployment check will bring in vs how much a potential minimum wage seasonal job will bring in. It would be crazy for him to take a seasonal job that would end up bringing in just a little more than his unemployment check when he could instead be searching for a better fit fulltime replacement job.

If the missed income is needed seeing if there’s any way you could take on seasonal work could make a lot more economic sense.

Tbh he could be way too late for election work but it’s worth 1 phone call to find out Mon morning.

He / you could look into doing Mturk with Amazon from home. The more you do, the more you make, and the larger paying things come up. I have done this to pay for Christmas presents in the past.

Leaf clean up and cleaning gutters especially after the leaves fall and clog the gutters. UPS and FedEx are looking for holiday help

Also taskrabbit.com, and possibly helparoundtown.com.

Good driving record? Our district is desperate for school bus drivers.

This is a great suggestion. My husband drives school bus. His company is desperate for drivers. They provide all the training and testing for the license, plus a sign-on bonus.
The shift work is ideal when job hunting because he would have time during the day between routes to fill out applications and interview for other jobs.

Wishing you both the best during this stressful time!
