People Mover....

People Mover is just classic Disney for me. Yes it is old, yes sometimes the moving walkway does not work, but I love it! A trip to the Magic Kingdom is not complete without a ride. It is a great way to rest those tired feet while enjoying a tour of Tomorrowland.
I've seen it when the ramp up to the ride wasn't working, but, very, very seldom. The circular load and unload one, I've never seen not working in the 35 years I have been going there. I always ride it, mostly in the evening when my feet are burning up and I want to sit and relax. If it is not crowded when we get to the unload area I will just signal to the CM by using in a circular motion with my hand that I want to go around again and they have never refused me yet.

I’m so sad we will probably just be hitting the left side of the park this visit (Pretty much nothing past the teacups!) and thus be missing the people mover! If we weren’t going in August I’d trek across the park just for a ride in it! All time favorite!
:(

Quick story: after a ride in it, my in laws, traveling alone, decided to go on space mountain, not believing my texts that it’s a real roller coaster. I mean, these people freaked out on Peter pans flight... needless to say, they did not handle space mountain well and feel like the people mover did not give them a fair assessment of the ride!
The screams didn't give them a hint? :P

I mean, now that the cars don't glow, the only part of the ride you can actually see (from the TTA or otherwise) is the lift hill (assuming the lights aren't on). But lift hills are a thing that practically every traditional roller coaster has-- it's not like you can assume the whole thing's going to be slow because the beginning's slow.

I can't visit the Magic Kingdom without riding the PeopleMover at least once-- I'll frequently even ride it during the day, then make it one of the last things I ride as I'm leaving the park if I can. Just an odd little tradition of mine, I guess. And it helps that after dark's the best time to ride the thing-- Tomorrowland all lit up is one of my favorite places to be at Disney.

Wow.. I think my 2 yo would like it...

My two year old loves the people mover. He is not very -or ok at all- adventurous (He is afraid of Peter Pans Flight because Tick Toc is trying to eat Hook at the end.) and is afraid of the dark and gets a little nervous during the Space Mountain part. So, I bring a glow stick for him to hang on to or let him look at pictures on my phone during that short minute.

Yes... watched a few.. I just disnt understand what the point of the ride was... or if there was one....

I think this would this be better at night with all the lights from Tommorowland !!

I love this attraction at night. We generally visit around the Holidays, and the view of the Castle all draped in lights is really awesome.

Generally, when the ramp up is not running, it is because there was a delay in loading, and the short queue at the top of the ramp is backed up. When that happens, if they don't stop the ramp, it then shoves all the people on it into the people whom are stuck at the top with no where to go. It gets pretty ugly pretty fast.

Kind of. It is driven by magnets.

Indeed it is. But, those magnets are powered by . . . electricity, are they not?

That is one reason yes, but, that doesn't happen very often. I have seen it not working a couple of times when there was no line at all. It is a pretty steep uphill climb. Theoretically though, there should almost never be that situation as the ramp, the turntable and the vehicles are all going the same walking speed. Perhaps someone disabled, or someone stopping to take a picture might cause it. I've been on it when the line was all the way to the bottom, but, they didn't need to stop it, it just all ran smoothly. Lately though, I'm thinking that they have had some increased mechanical problems. I've never seen the down one stopped though. Not surprising though since it has run just about all day everyday for over 40+ years.

We have had vastly different experiences with the people mover. I have seen many many times when the ramp was stopped, often with people on it, to avoid a pile up at the top. As a matter of fact, I saw exactly that happen one time this past August, and had it happen when I was on the ramp another time during the same trip. I have been on the ramp when the line at the top was backed up, and the only thing that kept the little girl standing at the top of that ramp from getting mowed down was me making everyone behind me walk backwards on the ramp until the operator realized what was going on and stopped it.

While everything theoretically moves at the same speed, if they get several small groups (say two or three people in a family) in a row whom take up a full car, that can back up the line. If they have several cars in a row that aren't functional (this happens frequently enough) that can back up the line. As a matter of fact, these backups are the entire reason why there is a CM at the bottom of the ramp, to regulate the flow of guests onto the ramp. This is to keep the queue at the top of the ramp full enough so that the loading CM always has guests to work with, but not let things back up so there is a pile up at the top of the ramp.

We are going in December!!! I will make sure this happens!!

Have a great time! PeopleMover is one of my favorite rides at WDW... it just is a nice way to relax and finally get off your feet, you get to see some "behind-the-scenes", you get to see the model for Walt's original vision of EPCOT, it's a great place to get your kid to nap ;) oh and the ramp up/down to the loading platform is kind of bumpy-feeling under your feet so it's kind of like a massage LOL

Not sure why you think I don't agree, we have just said the same thing. I agree that if it gets stacked up on top they will stop it. I, however, have never seen that happen, but, I can see that it might. I also understand that some people might have a problem with mobility causing a stop, I know that, but, I have personally never seen it. I have, however, in recent years, seen it not operating a couple of times with no apparent reason other then it must have been broken. Keep in mind I'm not there everyday so it could be more, that is the only time I have seen it not working was in recent years. The previous 31 or so years, nothing.

We are saying the same thing in different words. You mentioned one possibility in your original post and I just added some other reasons.
