Security Lines

You go through security before you get to the main entrance...

Um, I know that. You wrote "They have dogs at Mickey and friends..." and I'm saying that's a good start but they need them at the other security stops at Sunshine Plaza to minimize the hoards of people stuck outside security.
The recent near attack at WDW should be an eye opener.

They do have dogs out at the Mickey and friends security area.

Hopefully they use them for faster screening?

I like these dogs at the TSA. And I like them in general, wherever. But they do more good at the TSA. They sniff bombs. Some new explosives are making the old blow up a plane truck more popular and passenger screening canines will help detect them. We might get some loony with a bomb try to get into Disney, but the new terror model is more mass shootings and driving trucks into crowds. Bomb dogs went help those.

The most that can be hoped is that having the dogs present will potentially catch a bomb but also provide a significant psychological deterrent. Really, I see those dogs and they just look like they mean business.

Can somebody clarify the security line for me?

When we go in July, our first day will be an early morning in Disneyland and I know time is money so I want to make sure I have it right.

Walk to, or ask our Lyft driver to let us off at the Mickey and Friends drop off, go through security there, get on a tram to the main entrance?

Also, a no bag line... are small clutch purses considered a bag?

Thanks for clarifying, I’d like to try to avoid waiting like the OP did (if possible).

A clutch purse IS a bag. If you can put things in it, it is a bag.

If your coming via Lyft have them drop you at Downtown Disney and you’ll walk in there. They won’t be able to drop you at Mickey and friends.

On tuesday evening when the security lines were busy, there was no "no bag line" for the Toy Story Lot line. I had no bag and was hoping for one.

There is also a drop off location near the Harbor Side entrance. I would use this one because it's a shorter walk to the parks than DTD, but I don't know where you're coming from and it might be easier to be dropped off at DTD.

Yes, as mentioned, anything that can have something in it (no matter how small) is considered a "bag". Likewise, strollers cannot be take through the "no bag" line. I would go with the rule of thumb that if it something you have to open or security would normally ask you to please open so they can look at the content, then it's considered a "bag" and you cannot use the "no bag" line.

My tip for preparing for early entry into the parks:

Hand ALL bags and purses in your party to one person and send that person to wait in the regular security line. Use your most agile person adept at quickly opening and closing zippers. Everyone else in your party can then breeze through the “no bag” line and secure a good spot in the turnstile queues. I know line etiquette is somewhat sensitive, so I don’t mean to start up a controversial debate. But I’ve found most are generally fine with one straggler joining a group already in line. A large group joining only one person in line is more generally frowned upon.

Thanks everybody for the kind responses - I’m going to say that when I go to hockey games here the clutch I take (wallet on a strap basically) is allowed in the non bag line. I am going to read past what came across as a rude tone in that one response and hope that was just meant to be helpful! At any rate, got it, no purse - which means no non bag line for us as my epi pen is in my wallet/clutch.

Thanks for the help re: the entrance. If we walk we will come in Mickey and Friends, if Lyft DTD.

Thanks!

We are staying at the Country Inn on Clementine off Harbor. We will walk most days, but on that early day I’m thinking it will be a more successful start if we take a Lyft there. Thanks for your help!

Even if your walking you’ll have to back track to get into Mickey and friends. The stairwell through the cast parking lot is no longer accessible without a cast member ID swipe. I would recommend if walking to continue on through Downtown Disney.

I haven't stayed at the Country Inn, but I did look up the location and it seems like the Harbor Blvd entrance might be the easier/faster route both for walking and for Lyft.

Yes, I agree that it can be frustrating when one line is moving much slower than the surrounding lines. I had a random idea (while waiting in one of the very slow lines this week)...they should have the screening CMs move over one station every 5 guests (or so). That way, it should all average out, right?
Honestly, Airport style xRay machines would eliminate the problem completely, then while you walk through the metal detector, everything goes through the xRay machine and you get through in seconds per guest instead of minutes per guest.

Like airports, they could use dogs to minimize the time people spend in those dangerous lines that are just a target for terrorists.
Unfortunately the security lines are checking for other things as well, like glass containers, selfie sticks, etc. These are items that police dogs can't detect.

Carry a wallet in your pocket, otherwise it is considered a bag.
