Hurricane Irma?

It's very curious. Based on what I'm reading here, it's only Southwest so far. Equally odd, however, was that Southwest announced a couple of days ago that it anticipated flight disruptions, delays and/or cancellations for scheduled flights throughout Florida through September 17. Could be any number of reasons but nothing is clear right now. It doesn't seem to be MCO and the other airlines haven't followed - so it appears to be only a SW issue.

It's rampant speculation on my part (which is exactly what this thread doesn't need anymore of - but I'm at least prefacing it by saying I have no idea what I'm talking about and don't listen to me for facts) - but I wonder if SW has issues with slot allocation at these airports. There'll be a lot of traffic back into these airports when they reopen - a lot of demand and possibly not enough landing/take-off slots available for everyone. I have no idea what the arrangements are here, but the discount airlines can get squeezed by the legacy airlines and airport authorities when these fights come up. Could also just be aftereffects of SW trying to reposition its aircraft after all this. Whatever it is, anyone flying SW into MCO through next Sunday should continue to monitor their flight (per SW's earlier announcement).

With the same preface I will add my speculation to yours. When my daughter got the call that her Tuesday flight was cancelled, she was also told that she should keep checking because "some new flights might be added".

I also suspected that this had to do with positioning of aircraft and flight crews, etc and that they are cancelling flights until they know when and how they can resume operations into MCO. It's complicated further by the possibility that the ATlanta airport could be affected on Monday or Tuesday. So, maybe if things clear out and the aftermath isn't too severe, they will start sending some flights into MCO. So, I'm suggesting to my daughter that she keep checking the SW site to see if anything opens up in case the alternate she booked on another airline is cancelled.

I assume that SW and other airlines have moved their aircraft away from the Florida airports to keep them from being damaged and/or trapped and unusable. But when operations resume at these airports they are going to have big backlogs to deal with and are going to need to get planes there. They're going to want people on these incoming planes, but they can't schedule them yet.

It's the not knowing that's killing us all.

We're booked for Wednesday, but so nervous the airport won't be open or our flights will be cancelled. We already re-scheduled that from Saturday. Trying to be patient is hard.

I am also scheduled to arrive on Wednesday, after rescheduling from a Monday arrival. I'm curious to see if airlines will allow another flight change without charging a fare penalty.

Asking from a few pages back, but, isn't Poly a multi building resort? So, if they are offering buffet food, and one cannot go outside, how could guests get there?

I assume this issue is the same for guests at GF, who cannot get to the lobby without going outside?

You will only be confined to your rooms during the worst of the storm - not the entire 24-48 hours. Wear a poncho - there will be dry towels to dry off with at the door entrances to Poly GCH.

any locals have updates as to what's going on in Orlando and whats expected and when? I have friends in Oviedo and they said they're only about 40 minutes away

Southwest Flight Cancellations on Tuesday,

Sw says they have cancelled flights on Tuesday to allow their employees time to get their families safe again. We were Originally scheduled to leave Sunday, but then rescheduled tuesday. Now Wednesday. Everyone might already know this.

There are a lot of factors that could be the cause. They have re positioned a lot of their planes out of Florida to who knows where - now they have to get them back to the starting point.
Slots is defiantly one possibility - especially with the budget airlines.
If their crews are based in Florida they may have a shortage of help - the staff needs to go home after the storm and deal with results of the storm.

Another possibility is they have a couple of flights to Orlando that day - but only enough people to fill one - so they cancel a couple of the flights and everyone re books - so they just saved themselves a bunch of money.
Aer Lingus tried to do something similar to me recently. They canceled two of three flights to Ireland that day because they did not have full planes.
I was actually flying through Ireland to somewhere else - so they called my and told me I would not make my connecting flight and they wanted to put me on a direct Delta flight.
I know that was not true because I've flown this route before...but she was insistent. I then told her if I wanted to fly on Delta I would have booked Delta and saved myself $300 in the fist place.
After a bit of back and fourth I told her that I would keep my flight and if I missed my connecting flight I'd just stay in Dublin - I was coming back to Dublin anyway so it was no big deal.
Long story short - when I got to the Airport I spoke to the women at check-in and she said she was wrong and I would make my flight.
No apology for all the stress this caused the two hours before the flight. I had noticed the other two flights were cancelled and called her on it she laughed and so no we would never do that.

Well yes they would - in the end it is about profit and if it is more profitable to cancel a few flights and mess with people vacations they will - and they will lie to your face.

Thanks but that Seems to be just accuweather and fox which we have both -- looking for live up to date reports

Did you actually watch it? It's the local FOX affiliate. They talk specifically about Orlando and the wind speeds and when it's expected to go through. There's nothing happening in Orlando right now.

We are scheduled to drive down Tuesday. As a person who has lived on the coast of NC and had to deal within tourist during the storms, we have not begrudged any one who came to our beach after a big storm. I think the warning for tourist to leave is so they know how dangerous it is to stay, and that no emergency services will be available. Many do not realize that fact unless you have to live through it.

I'm also a nurse, and am set to volunteer at a shelter Tuesday with a mentor prior to starting our vacay. So please people, be nice, and try to place yourself in others shoes.

I hope everyone is safe, that damage is minimal to all in Florida and Georgia, and that you all enjoy your next Disney vacation.

I am not surprised flights on Tuesday are already being cancelled by the airlines. Orlando will be under curfew until 6pm Monday. After the all clear, MCO will have to be checked over for damage of buildings, make sure runways are not damaged and all debris is cleared from runways. I don't know if they can do this at nighttime or not. Once it has been determined it is safe they will then open the airport. Then airline/airport employees have to be able to get to work. Airlines will then have to start getting planes into correct positions to fly into MCO and will also need flight crew. Only so many flights can land/depart in an hour. There are only so many gates available at MCO. Once the airport opens normal operations are not going to resume right away. It is going to take a few days to get everything operating normally. Then Irma will be moving north, so the weather is going to still be affecting flights and airport closures.

Thank you it's going to be a long day :drinking1

@Rachel Underwood
is there anyway to make a DL trip for just a few days? Then wdw later when you all can be together?

This is an excellent point. Disneyland is just a plane ride away in the opposite direction. I've seen a number of posts on the DL board in recent days from people ditching Florida and heading for sunny California. Lots of Disney magic to be had, without the stress of hurricanes, curfews and canceled flights.

We are under curfew from 7pm today to 6pm tomorrow. It's rainy and grim outside, but nothing has started yet. Everything is closed.
